With the latest build, I'm getting stack overflow errors (I'll post one below). Also I can't seem to get it not show every craft count possible, even if I uncheck the option and reload the UI.

Meh. Here's another updater to rail against. Found it by searching Google for nanoTalk whilst bored yesterday.

This isn't a flame thread where we 'rail against' updater programs. This is meant to be a constructive thread on how to have our cake and eat it too. ;)

The main problem I see with WoWus is that he's not saying where he gets his updates. Though from looking at screenshots, he does list the actual author name in the updater.

That said, a quick glance at WoWus, it doesn't look like he makes money off of the downloads. And other than a request for donations for the updater, not the addons, I don't see that the author is profiting from ads or other revenue.

Actually, I already Implemented an "Info" Link to the Original Info Site for each Addon and Site that can be downloaded by WADDU.

*smirk* Hence why I added my disclaimer to the end of my post. I don't know what features you do or do not have. I just pulled your updater's name due to its growing popularity and reference in Moo's post. But it's great that you do have this info included. :)

posted a message on Updaters and How To Be Fair To Addon Sites
Since this seems to be a constant concern through the updater threads, I thought I'd start a thread solely for the purpose of discussing how to best handle using updaters and maintaining fairness to the different sources. I feel this topic deserves its own thread.

    Quote from Moo
Of course it would be an idea if the author of WADDU and the people at the various addon sites would sit down together and maybe come up with a solution to avoid them blocking this and similar fine tools; an idea would be that the addon pages offer an adfeed that updaters can or have to integrate into their program to gain access to the downloads.

I see why the sites want ad traffic and similar to pay for their costs, but on the other hand ... users like me that use Firefox/Adblock see zero ads anyway, so what is the next step? Don't allow FF users to download addons?

IMHO: for the addon sites it would make the most sense to work with the addon updater authors to increase their ad revenue. People like me that don't mind manually checking/updating their mods are in fact causing MORE traffic than a working updater since we will connect to their servers several times a day to check for new stuff ... while not seeing a single ad to "pay" for it in any way.

Moo brings up an excellent point regarding those of us who use browsers that block ads, add to that, those addons hosted at google or other domains and it's hard for the common user to see why updaters are such a problem. It'd be bad (or possibly hard) for addon sites to block a specific web browser and well most authors host in multiple locations, so it'd be kind of dumb too.

I think what might help is if the addon sites and updater authors agreed to how best distribute the addons. One way might be, if a user decides to download QualityID (my addon;)) from WoWI using WADDU*. WADDU would have to not only show that I'm the author, they would also need to have a link to the download page for QualityID at WoWI. If the user gets it from Googlecode then it would link to the googlecode download page and so on. Also, it would have to be explicit that WADDU could not profit from the downloads themselves. It'd be one thing for WADDU to have a donation button, but WADDU couldn't charge for the service of the updater or use ads that only benefit the client.

*I am only using WADDU as an example, I actually haven't used it yet due to still being WoW Computerless. If it'll make it easier, substitute WADDU with 'generic wow addon updater of choice' where ever WADDU is used in this post. ;)

posted a message on how to update directly from wowace.com?
The only way to update from project pages is to manually download the .zip under Files or use SVN, Git, etc, to get the files directly. Either way is manual and unless you're an addon developer or helpful tester, there's no real benefit of getting the files from WoWAce over Curse/CurseForge.

1: Sometimes I use an Alpha version from WowAce, don´t mind the odd bugs, or as I have done in the last few days gotten Beta and release versions from WowAce. If these versions are never than the release version on Curse, will CC recognize this, since I have manually installed them? Furthermore will CC recognize any version manually installed?

I believe you'd have to specify in the CC list to not have that addon auto update (right click, uncheck autoupdate).

Due to my computer being 3300 miles away from my desk, I can't try the new CC, so I'm not sure exactly how things are setup, but, in most updaters the user wants their addons to update automatically. Why do people want CC to act differently? Unless the user is updating most of their addons manually, I don't see why they'd want the default to be different. And if the user is manually updating most of their addons elsewhere, why use CC at all?

That's what I thought. So I have to click a bookmark in Firefox to show me a listing of my Favorites. No biggie.

    It is there. Read below.

I too am fine with downloading from the sites themselves.

Where do I find the option (assuming there is one) on Curse to "email notification of new favorites"? I'm not seeing it?

If you're looking for addons via wow.curse.com then look for the very small box that says 'add to faves' to the left of the basic info for the addon. If you're looking at wow.curseforge.com then click the 'Subscriptions' tab on the addon page of choice, and then check the box to be notified of file updates.

I find the methods provided by the release sites themselves to be quite satisfactory, actually. But then again, I seem to be in the minority in that I don't feel the need to have one-click mass updates a dozen times a day. Personally I think "add to favorites" and "email notification of new favorites" gets the job done in a much more convenient way; I don't even have to open another program and wait while it checks for updates.

    Also, what Pastamancer said.

When I joined the WotLK Beta, I started to use the 'add to favorites' and 'email notify' diligently on WowI. Along side subbing to WoWAce threads, this provided most of my updating needs, even if my wants weren't met.

Truly, the 'Update All' button is a fantastical WANT. With WAU, it was a convenience that was meant for Addon authors to more easily access projects with more than one coder. It grew into a huge uncontrollable monster. Well that monster has been slain, and the end user is ignorantly revolting that the 'Update All' button is theirs and they demand it back. It's NOT. It's gone. The best we can hope for, from an ethical standpoint, is an updater that will do exactly what email notifications of your favorite addons do, with the ability to download from a convenient one-stop-shop (application).

    Quote from honem
Your idea for a monthly fee type service is pretty good ...isnt that what Kaelten is doing right now ?
The problem people have with this, is that it's the site known as Curse asking for money to make updating easier. Even though Kaelten is now with Curse, people ignore this fact and focus on the company (It's not Ace (WAU), it's Curse (Curse Client)! Oh noes!! ;)).

It's unfortunate that the Curse Client isn't as smooth as most of us would like it to be, yet. But hopefully they'll be able to fix and polish it to work well, in the very near future. It won't be WAU (it shouldn't be WAU), but it will give us what we basically want. A one place app to update the most popular of our addons.

On that note, I probably will update my addons via SVN until the CC handles addon versions by checking the TOC, not the date, among other minor 'fixes'. Well once I get my computer back, that is. Hey with any luck, CC will be end-user functional by the time I get it back.

    - avoids WAU's not-insignificant startup time when i'm in a rush, which is usually the case when i get home from work right before raids
    - allows me to quickly search/add/remove/reinstall/update WowAce addons on the fly instead of having to re-open the updater every time i think of something
    - allows me to browse the generated composite changelog in a piecemeal fashion via alt-tabbing repeatedly during boring raid trash, so that i can keep up with any interesting changes

I hope you aren't implicitly suggesting that a disdain for my usage patterns might somehow invalidate the seriousness of needless, constant high CPU usage.

Isn't WAU being shutdown in about 4 weeks, when Ace starts utilizing Curse Forge? And since it's already been said that WAU is no longer going to be updated, unless it's an easy fix, I'd gather that they won't work too hard to fix the cpu usage.

I think that full frame copychat + the experimental module = not going to work. If you disable the experimental module it should be ok.

Er... On live I don't even have an experimental mod to disable on my bank alt.

Attached is my mod control tab of my bank alt.

EDIT: Figured out why I don't have the experimental mod... I don't have debug or HighCPU enabled on her. *goes to turn them on to see if that actually helps*

EDIT2: Whether experimental is enabled or disabled, the copychat still messes up.

    Live. Disembedded.

While copying some text, I noticed that it was a little funny. The text doubles and triples in some places, with the multiples being scattered, not all together. Also, some lines end up with no spacing between it and the next line. Below is just a snippet from my copychat log. The names have been changed to protect whoever may care and I was in whispers with just one person, though I think his edited name is spelled differently in a couple of places. The /who text of 'Krs' is only auto-generated once by the mod WhoWhisperedMe, which shows the who info when someone sends a tell to me for the first time, note, that the log doesn't show the who until line 7, though in actual chat it occurred correctly.
