    There is not a font string character limit, as far as I know. However, the text of your font string will be truncated if the font string object’s dimensions are insufficient to display the full text.

    As for your other question, I’m not really clear on what you're trying to do. Do you just want to make a copy of the “Tailoring 425/450” status bar from the character sheet skills tab and display it somehwere in the UI? If so, I’d suggest simply copying Blizzard’s code. If not, could you be more descriptive about what you do want?

    Thank you for that info about the font string. I have been trying to debug an issue with my addon Professional on curse and my font string was getting cut off.

    as for the rest of what I want to do is exactly like you said, but I don't know where to find blizzards code to mimic it as Tailoring 425/450 or what ever profession a player has. My plans are to take the current skill level and display a message based on that skill and level.

    Please guide me O wise one *bows*

    I want to make a status bar (several) and show what their current status is.

    So I need at least 2 that are for the main and second profession, if no professions exist don't display the bars and give no profession chosen yet. And then I will have fishing, cooking and first aid below these 2 bars.

    I'm unsure how to completely do this. Mainly changing the fontstring next to the status bar and getting the status bar data. As well as to update the status bar in real time to match the crafting window.

    Can someone provide a good example for me to work off of?

    Also off topic, but is their now a fontstring character limit?

    By "enforces", I meant that Java requires that you handle your errors.

    Edit: "Unhandled exception" is the most common error message you will ever see in Java and it's fatal. :)

    The "enforcing" done by Lua is at the C level, where there are more options for handling errors. Inside the scripting sandbox, your choices are "die inside the sandbox" or "stagger outside the sandbox and die there". For programs where you have control over the C code, it becomes extremely flexible. For WoW, it's not much of a choice.

    Information does not prevent stupid. Always -- always -- handle potential errors. Java enforces this, too bad Lua doesn't.

    I think you lost me... Is this relevant to my question?

    Also remember that if your users manage to get these links out of your addon and into something naturally wow or other addons (via Shift Click or other oddity), it'll throw an error with an invalid link type.

    Would it be better if I just have a custom tooltip to show up on mouse hover that contains the information to prevent such an error? If yes, how should I go about it.

    No. It is just a standard wow frame widget. Nothing to do with Ace. It's like your chatframe.

    Right now, what you have is a fontstring, and you're setting some text to that fontstring. What you want instead is a ScrollingMessageFrame and then adding messages to that frame. You must then attach a OnHyperLinkEnter/OnHyperLinkLeave/OnHyperLinkClick scripts to your frame.

    http://wowprogramming.com/docs/widgets/ScrollingMessageFrame

    Ok, you are correct i must have missed it in the default api. So how should I go about converting my string into being able to use the hyperlink functions. How I have my string is shown above. How can I break it up for the hyperlink functions? my string format is:
    Alchemy_text = [[ texthere [linkhere] texthere [linkhere] endoftext ]];

    Your item link will only be clickable in frames of types ScrollingMessageFrame or ChatFrame (by adding the text using f:AddMessage())

    After some digging that is an ace function correct? This addon I'm doing is a standalone at this time. The main reason is for me to become more familiar to addon programming. Perhaps later I will add ace. Also doesn't ScrollingMessageFrame require how many lines of text I have? I can't give a definate as the text length changes per button click. Perhaps if you saw my code in my addon you would see how I set it up. You will see I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible.

    If you just want a clickable "link" for a string in a frame, you can use, among other things, a button with text on it.

    And that would bring up this:
    If I set:
    Alchemy_text = [[ texthere [linkhere] texthere [linkhere] endoftext ]];
    Do I need to break it up like in php:
    Alchemy_text = [[texthere ]].function getlink(linkdata).[[ more text ]] .getlink(linkdata).[[ endoftext ]]

    How do i go about that even? Because I can't seem to do it like php. I hope I giving a good enough description... perhaps pictures are needed...
    In the guide click link:

    when link clicked get info like in chat:

    Okay over a week now and no reply. Does anyone have an answer to my question? How about a new question as well. If I set:
    Alchemy_text = [[ texthere [linkhere] texthere [linkhere] endoftext ]];

    Do I need to break it up like in php:
    Alchemy_text = [[texthere ]].function getlink(linkdata).[[ more text ]] .getlink(linkdata).[[ endoftext ]]

    My guides are long so if I could get link info within the default [[ ]] setup would be great.

    Thanks for the reply, I will give that a shot.

    EDIT: To make sure I'm not screwing up in the TextString:
    = texthere |cffffffff|Hitem:118:0:0:0:0:0:0:0|h[Minor Healing Potion]|h|r endoftext. newtext hlinkhere endoftext.

    I get the color to work but it doesn't seem to produce the link. Is there something wrong in my text or xml for the frame? Or will I need to make a game tooltip, like ex. on mouse over link show tooltip with item data. I'm not sure how to do that very well, but it won't mean I won't try.

    go to http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/fileinfo.php?id=13517#info or http://wow.curseforge.com/projects/professional/ for my latest updates. updated to v1.0f

    How can I create hyperlinks of certain pieces of text? I think it would be something like "text here".hyperlink(ingameid, name,color)."text continued"

    And lastly how do I check users inventory for total items needed to craft.
    ex. %haveitems outof %needed, if %have=%need changefont color green.
    I think I will need some sort of array for a whole list to check. This part is not needed for this version of my addon, but the rest is needed for me to release.

    I have included a zip of my alpha so far. Please be kind as this is my first time making a WoW addon. I made it in Addon Studio v2. Addon now is Professional v1.0d

    Thank you for any help you can provide.
