Jul 25, 2008Don't forget that WoWInterface has a special download category set up for authors to be able to upload mods for testing under WotLK, same as we did for TBC: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/cat110.htmlPosted in: General Chat

I don't agree with that.(Unsurprisingly, I'm sure most of you will say.) We do a lot to try to make sure that c&p mods don't make it on our site. And it's a lot more than just looking at the name of the mod.Quote from Astaldo »At a guess 20% of new addons submitted to wowi are copy-paste addons.

but their filtering is set at the lowest possible level... only catching the most blatantly idiotic attempts. A simple rename seems to be enough to bypass it.

That being said, hi, we're human. How many thousands of mods are out there? How many thousands upon thousands of lines of code? We do what we can. If something slips through, which it inevitably will, as soon as the originating author (or anyone else, for that matter) makes us aware of it, we pull the mod into a non-public category and investigate it. If we can see that it is in fact a copyright violation, we delete it. During "normal" times, if it was someone trying to claim it as their own, we give them one warning not to do it again, or depending on how "bad" it was, we just ban them outright. If it was someone saying "hey, I love this mod, but it wasn't on WoWI so I uploaded it here for everyone", we send them a PM telling them that our policy is no uploads by anyone other than the actual author and to contact that author asking them if they'd be willing to upload it themselves. If they do it again, they get banned.
And during this particular time, while we're giving out the keys, we don't just delete it and send the offender a PM saying "naughty, don't do it again", we just out-right ban them from the site from the get go. As Xinhuan pointed out, Shirik alone has banned 35 people from the site in less than a week. Multiple that by 7 (the number of staff on the site) and add a few more just for good measure as you come up with a LOW estimate of the number of people who have been banned on WoWI for attempting to scam a key by trying to claim someone else's mod as their own. That's 245+ people banned since we announced the key give-away on the 19th. That isn't even one week. Now imagine how many mods have actually been submitted, if we've "been able to" ban that many.
No, we aren't perfect, but we try, and the suggestion that we don't, that we have it "set at the lowest possible level" is neither fair nor deserved.

Jul 19, 2008_ForgeUser6398 posted a message on Massive Mod Author WotLK Beta Key Give-Away at WoWInterface!/edit Keys starting to arrive guys, so watch your in-boxesPosted in: General Chat
WotLK beta download category and forum for you guys to use getting your mods tested for the expansion, make use of them!
WotLK Beta Author guilds
US PvE (Northrend server)
Alliance: <Secure Templars>
Horde: <WTB API PST>
EU PvE (Coldarra server)
Alliance: <Tainted and Secure> (still looking for sigs, send tell to Funkeh)
Horde: <Restricted Crusade> (still looking for sigs, send tell to Korrow)
We took care of you last time and we aren?t letting you down this time either. It was so highly successful that we are doing it again! Another massive Beta key give-away for mod authors, this time for the upcoming expansion Wrath of the Lich King!
This is not a contest! Whether using US or EU client, if you are a mod author that hosts with us and you have been keeping your mods current, you are eligible for a key!
* You must have an active World of Warcraft account.
* You must be an addon author with one or more mods on the site that are current to 2.4 (Compilations & "Hello world" or its equivalent do not count).
* One key per author. Blizzard will check to make sure you aren't getting multiple keys, so don't try to scam.
* Your WoWInterface account must be registered to a valid email address. This does not need to be the same account you are using for your WoW account, it just has to be a valid one that you will check.
* Both US and EU can sign up for keys. Make sure you check the radial button that applies to you.
* Do not upload addons that are not your own. Anyone caught uploading someone else's work will be banned from the site. All addons submitted are manually checked.
* Blizzard and WoWInterface reserve the right to deny anyone a key.
Mar 10, 2008_ForgeUser6398 posted a message on Trojan Virus in the adds at WoWHead, Thottbot and Alkawhatever.Annoys me too. And undoubtedly it's annoying the ever-loving-sh1t out of alla/thott/wowhead that they can't pin it down to get rid of it. I was just trying to clear up some misinformation about what it is, and provide information on how to get rid of it.Posted in: Updaters
Mar 10, 2008_ForgeUser6398 posted a message on Trojan Virus in the adds at WoWHead, Thottbot and Alkawhatever. It's not a trojan or keylogger. It's a spyware ad that they are fully aware of and trying to clean up. It opens a popup window. The only way you will get infected with the spyware (not keylogger, not trojan - spyware) is if you are actually stupid enough to click the popup.Posted in: Updaters
If you HAVE gotten infected by it, instructions on how to clean it are here.

Shirik told me that your request has already been made by others as well and will be implemented in a future version.Quote from Xinhuan »Will it skip addons that have a .svn folder?

Feb 19, 2008Recently Shadowd uploaded a project to make it easier for authors to upload updates for their mods to WoWInterface. Now it's the end-users' turn.Posted in: Updaters
The WoWInterface UI Manager is a project by Shirik that has been going on for nearly a year. It's a tool designed to help you keep track of installed addons, and assist in updating them quickly and easily. The UI Manager uses an internal API of WoWInterface so you can be sure it will continue to work even when site layout changes or if you choose a new skin.
* One-click Check allows the UI Manager to run through all of your addons quickly without any intervention. Any addons that do need to be updated will wait for your approval before continuing.
* Multithreaded design allows for maximum use of your internet connection, processing complex compression for backup files while downloading other files at the same time.
* Connection to the WoWInterface user database to retrieve your favorites list.
* Automatic backups before every install
* All updates are compared against MD5 hashes before being installed to help ensure security.
This is a portable program; it works on Windows, Linux & Macintosh. There is one version for Windows users and another for Linux & Macintosh users. See the file description page of the version that is appropriate for you for further details, requirements and directions.
Please note: This is currently a BETA RELEASE of the application and you should be aware that things may go wrong. This program is the work of one author, and is not small by any means. There may be bugs, although he has taken taken every precaution he can that if something DOES go wrong, you can hopefully recover from it -- but he cannot guarantee that.

Feb 13, 2006However, I *do* get upset when I subsequently get PMs at WoWI telling me to push Kaelten into approving someone. Don't pull a stunt like that again, or I'm liable to refuse Kael's request to give someone the status.Posted in: General Chat
And as point of interest, this is the listing of requirements by WoWI to even be considered as a FA. It gets added to from there for Ace, because you have the additional requirement that you must also be approved by the team lead, Kaelten.
