This is the last open source project for me. Not only do i not recieve any income from this, many of the end-users are not even appreciative.

Take for example the people who compile out the ad and talk about posting it. That's not what open source was supposed to be. It was so you could take the code and make an updater for your own site, not hurt ours. Frankly - I have had enough.

compiling out the ads is just not needed...most people stick with version .24
yesterday asked all people in raid, outcome:
    players @raid: 38
    players using wau: 29
    players sticking with .24: 23

everything ad related within the updater will just help (people stick with old version, noone clicks on ads)

ya better locking for ways to reduce used bandwith. as i said, updaters are easy to use -> people use them very often (more then 1x per day) -> massive bandwith usage for downloading minor updates like ("hey we corrected 1 misspelling in our readme.txt, here all xyz million users download the new 500kb bug updated file")

If you want release versions, use one of the updaters that pulls mods from wowi/curse and download release versions from there.

hrmpf...is it that hard to understand ?
i have no problems at all with that but kaelten obviously has because he has to pay for the traffic, you know ?

    in short:

    - massive traffic for kaelten because of lots of minimal updates

    clear enough ?

How about files.wowace.com becoming a repository (or whatever you want to call it) of only tag versions, rather than the trunk versions? For those that aren't familiar, see http://www.wowace.com/trac/browser and bear in mind that tags is the directory for "official, stable" versions; trunk is the directory for current, stable developer versions; and branch is the directory for working copies that different people might be writing.

yes something like that. with autoupdaters it's very easy now to update all addons. people are using the updater very often, i know some people that update their addons EVERY time before they start wow...thats 5-10 times per day !

currently i'm looking how much traffic this behavier produces. so far i used the updater 3 times within 2 hours...guess what ? it downloaded bigwigs alle 3 times ! thats 1,5mb traffic for what benefit ? oh yeah going from 43890 to 43899 (2 korean language fixes + archimonde enrage timer)

Because no file on files.wowace.com is a release version! We are getting automatically packaged files from the development SVN repository. The developers are not the ones putting a strain on wowace.com. We users are.

release version or not...the updater is downloading them and genereates that much traffic. isn't it possible that wau online updates to versions that are marked as "release" ?

    Quote from teedog »

Therefore, the solution is to discontinue WAU and shutdown files.wowace.com rather than asking developers to "update less", which is absurd. Is that what you wish for, Mr. Troll? SVN can go back to being dev-only, and users will go to WoWi and Curse for updates.

as for most addons on curse: look how often these get updated, every 1-2 weeks with official versions . lot of less traffic...

I personally will click the silly ads if they bring in money to help support the server costs. I like files.wowace.com and WAU, and I'm very grateful to the people who make them possible.

you will, most will not. what's kaelten's next step to reduce costs ?

This argument makes no sense. Obviously the traffic issue is "self-inflicted". If wowace.com shuts down files.wowace.com, and restrict svn.wowace.com to developers only, all our traffic issues will be solved.

Heck, all of Kaelten's troubles are "self-inflicted". He could shut down wowace.com entirely and save himself the monthly fees.

    /boggle

is it really necessary that there are new versions of the addons EVERY DAY for every little shit of a bugfix ? because of this the traffic is that high. why can't there be "release versions" once every 2-4 days ? this little step would half the traffic...

P.S. In case my sarcasism isn't clear, I am so sick and tired of people complaining for the sake of complaining. Nothing Blizzard does is ever good enough. Nerf? Bitch moan complain. Buff? Bitch moan complain. Developers updating their addons too often? Bitch moan complain. Users don't have an easy way to update to development versions and have to rely on slow WoWi or Curse updates? Bitch moan complain.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Shame on you people.

troll on...i asked the question if developers are maybe willing to help kaelten lower his traffic costs....

Updater traffic accounts for more than 80% of wowace's traffic. [...]

Now if there are specific ads that are honestly offensive or distracting I can work with that. A mass exodus from wowaceupdater to other updaters WON'T fix this. It may however cause me to put blocks in place limiting bandwith usages and other nasties that I really DON'T WANT TO DO!

    the traffic issue is housemade.
the addon developers are releasing several new versions every day with minimal improvement but generating massive traffic.
...if there would be only a new addon version once every week your traffic would be alot lower.
