SMM does indeed reference BOTTOMLEFT or ParentUI when placing objects (minimap and the other frames in the 'movers' module). it doesn't make any attempt to compensate for rez changes. it's seemed to me that the UIParent frame is a fixed number (say 1024x768) and it's scaled for different rez settings. this is just a guess tho, i haven't seen this written down.
i normally play at 1600x1200, my desktop is 1280x1024, when i switch to windowed mode i switch to rez to 1152x864 for the window. i haven't seen the problems that you're describing.
however, apparently i need some math in there to account for the screen resolution changes. maybe getting the scale of UIParent? not sure, i'll have to look into it.

How hard do you suppose it would be for a total novice to hack the coordinate graphics from SMM into something like Minimalist?
the coords module is pretty much self-contained. have a go.

I think the fact that SMM doesn't do anything when switching between modes is part of the problem. It stays at the coordinates it was at in full screen mode. When I switch, the window is at 1024x768 size (roundabout, i think) but the minimap stays in position as if the screen were still in 1280x854 resolution. I have to move the map back onto the screen, and then when switching back to full screen, it's set into the center of the screen.
I've tried locking the map, and I've messed with just about every other setting. I can post screenshots of what's going on, if it might help. I switch between modes a lot, so this can get really irritating. Thank you for all the help so far.
i switch modes often too, i've even hacked/written a mod called switcherFu that switches video rez when you go from full to windowed. i've never had my minimap move or have i seen the problems you describe. the 'fix mod' i mentioned earlier was specific to a Mac.

I just reread my post and realized what this sounds like. I DO NOT want the ability to target minimap blips. I know that is not available anymore.
I want to be able to show the name class and level of map pings. Either in party chat or via the ping module frame.
i've been thinking about a module that does this. IMHO, the loss of ability to click-target minimap blips greatly reduces functionality of a mod like this. mods that cache stuff like this just to colorize names i personally tend to avoid.
have you tried ICU?

I'm kind of new to the "tinkering" phase of addons. I mostly only know how to install the things. I just learned about updating versions in the .toc.
Another question, then: I tried deleting the modules, and that worked fine, but one of the things that bothers me about sMM is still happening. I'm on a Mac, and I switch between full screen and windowed mode a lot. With sMM installed, when I switch to windowed mode, the mini map frame stays at the same location as when it's in full screen mode. I can see the actually map scrolling by, where's it's supposed to be, as a small sliver visible at the edge of what's visible in the window.
Any ideas why this happens? I had forgotten that that was my original reason for no longer using this mod.
doesn't happen without SMM? there's nothing this mod does when switching between full/screened modes. i do vaguely remember seeing a 'fix' mod for this issue but it wasn't related to SMM specifically.

ok here is how it works.
1.) some of your guildies have noteshare installed and are broadcasting notes.
2.) without noteshare you can filter out what notes are coming to you
3.) wether you have a module or not is irelevannt when you receive a note .. it just says creator if you have the corresponding module it can correctly setup the icon and such since it knows what it is. Without the module Cart Notes see it as just someone named 'Quests' and a valid note .
4.) IF you dont want the notes install cart noteshare and turn the filters on OR have your guildies not broadcast quest notes.
Because Cartographer is modular it isn't changed everytime someone adds a module.
installing a noteshare module to not share notes seems a bit non-intuitive to me. i'm not trying to nit-pick or whatever, but why would i be recieving any shared notes at all without the 'noteshare' module installed? and if this is supposed to be a base function, why offer a module? and if it is a base function why are there no options to configure it?

What you need to do if you get this is that under the options for Cartographer_Noteshare, turn off the receival for all plugins you don't have, like Cartographer_Quests in your example. (and of course also for all you just don't want :) )
i'm not using Cart_Noteshare, as i stated above. and even if i was, why would i be getting notes for modules i don't have installed? is calling Cartographer:HasModule('quests') so hard?

it takes some setting up, but once its running and configured it works nice.
prat is huge, way too much for me. i'm a minimalist and prat seems to have gone a different path... it got to the point where i was deleting 3/4 of the modules every update and i got tired of doing that.

I want SimpleChatMods to do just what I want it to do, no options required.
The only thing from your original post that SCM doesn't do, is
* makes chat channels 'sticky' or 'unsticky'
Which I don't even know what means, but yeah .. It sounds like you can set one channel to be the default and any other channel must be activated manually.
In any case, a "module" that does this is fine, and other small things like this, but adding options to it is not fine.
I can make it easier to hook into so that you can make an external FuBar plugin for configuring it without much trouble, though .. Would that be OK? What do you want to configure?
well....this is why i just started writing my own instead of hacking yours =). what do i want to configure? everything, of course. i want to be able to change the number of lines that scroll in the ChatFrame with the mousewheel (i prefer 2 lines, not one), i want to change the modifier used to drop to the bottom/top of the ChatFrame, i want to change the date format (i prefer %H:%M to %X), i want to make some channels sticky and others not sticky, i want to be able to easily disable modules i don't use (like the playernames one) because i don't want to delete it every time i run winaceupdate.
i don't see why you wouldn't make every part of SCM configurable...
Jan 18, 2007i got notes everywhere. notes i didn't add. i'm in outland and i have alot of square question mark icons all over that say the Quests module has added them. they are square, black and frankly annoying because they cover up the minimap. the problem is that i'm not using the Quests module.Posted in: Map/Minimap AddOns
i'm fairly certain that they are being added by guildies, since they are increasing quickly and in places i haven't gotten to yet.
i have Cart, Cart_Herb and Cart_Mine installed.
i have other notes added by guildies that don't bother me as much but i can't seem to be able to a) turn of this feature or b) approve notes or c) mark them as temporary and have them not saved.
is this normal?

Spend your time in SimpleChatMods, please.
Feel free to modify the trunk SCM as you please, as long as it doesn't break.
i noticed that you had started SCM. looks like a good start, but no control over any options. i can definately put effort into getting SCM into a FuBar format.
