Oct 4, 2008The resetting of auto installing addons was fixed. It has worked several version before, and an update broke the saving of the change. You could've gone in the registry and set it by hand but I wouldn't expect anyone to do it, malware wouldn't have given you the option.Posted in: Updaters
I'm aware the scan addons at startup can pick up old and outdated versions of addons some times. Thats why the "Reinstall New Addons" option is disabled by default. It is also why you are prompted if you even want to turn scan addons at startup. Originally this feature was not even in the client, you were expected to click the links on the website or on the find an addon page to get addons in the list. Scan Addons at Startup ( and the reason why it only happened at startup and not periodically ) was designed to get you an import of your addons before you had used the client before, and prune it down from there.
I personally recommend not using the scan addons feature, starting with a blank list, and picking the addons to install.
The reason most people are getting broken versions of addons is because its getting really old ones when the "Reinstall New Addons" feature is enabled, otherwise scan addons at startup keeps the addons you already have and doesnt install broken crap.

What I gather from previous posts is that the option "Reinstall New Addons" means whether to actually install the new version of updated addons. If this assumption is correct I believe the naming could possibly be more to the point. Something like 'Apply Updates to Addons' or just 'Apply Updates' or 'Install Updates'. To me, "Reinstall New Addons" made little sense. if addons were "reinstalled" they could not be "new" at the same time. Reinstalling is something you do with software which has been installed at least once, not when patching/updating imo.
Confused user, now less confused.
I dunno if anyone replied to this, but I thought it deserved a reply if it hasnt gotten on.
When you scan addons at startup we can do two things. We can install the "latest" from curse.com, or we can assume you already have the latest.
Turning Reinstall new addons, downloads the "latest" from curse and overwrites whats on disk. Turning it off ( default behavior now ) keeps whatever files you have on disk and sets the last update version to today. That means only updates in the future will be applied, which ensures that you dont get some whacky 2 year old version of an unmaintained addon.
