So does Recount track each individual player's combat flag or does it start a timer for each player based on when they first do damage in an encounter? The latter could explain the strange (to me at least) numbers that I see when one player is top on Damage Done but a different player is top on DPS (even in single-target boss fights at close range).
I think that's where my disconnect is - I'm used to the old DamageMeters add-on which, apparently, uses a global encounter timer for each group fight meaning that the longer a player waits to jump in, the lower that player's DPS will be when combat ends, regardless of total damage done. DamageMeters also reduces a dead player's DPS as the fight continues, which can make analysis of some fights difficult.
