The cute animals people mysteriously see popping up are actually a part of the "Chinchilla" style border texture. It looks exactly like the "Tooltip" style border texture, except that if the lower-left corner of the minimap is square, you'll see a white chinchilla peeking up curiously over the edge. If the upper-right corner of the minimap is round, you'll see a grey chinchilla hanging on for his dear life.

then how does the class colours in Cartographer work?

The class colors in Cartographer (or Mapster, or any similar addon) work by overlaying the dots blizzard displays on the world map or battleground map with dots it draws itself. They do not affect the minimap at all.

There are built-in functions that allow the dots on the world map and battleground map to be updated. There are no such functions for the tracking blips on the minimap.

An author could conceivably write an addon that adds new dots to the minimap (like with Cartographer Notes or GatherMate), but it would only work for players whose positions you already know (players in your party or raid).

I had a break between meetings at work today and made two new sets of blips. I haven't tried them in-game yet, so I have no idea what they might actually look like on the minimap, but feel free to try them out!

    Glass Spheres

    Solid Spheres

These previews don't really do them justice. The glass spheres are actually very transparent, and might show some interesting effects on the minimap when they overlap.

odd to have the one attached and the other not etc.

Blame Blizzard. They originally chose to anchor so many things that aren't logically map-related (durability indicator, quest watch list, capture bar, quest timer, etc.) to the minimap only because they assumed it would always be in the top-right corner of the screen, which made it convenient. It also ensured none of these things would ever accidentally overlap the minimap.

Now, any addon that allows you to move the minimap has to deal with all these things that are anchored to it. The question is, do you want that minimap addon to also try to deal with things that were never anchored to it in the first place?

It may seem like a small thing, but what happens when another users asks, "I see you've made the PvP score frame movable; can you make the fading zoning text frames movable, too?" Now this second request is actually even a bit more map-related. But again, it's dealing with something that--from the game's perspective--isn't connected to the minimap at all.

Adding new features is wonderful, but having too many can turn an addon into a monster. There's really no reason Chinchilla can't also post your auctions, draw your unit frames, and monitor your raid's threat. But there are many reasons it shouldn't. :)

P.S.--I hope my own excitement for new features hasn't nudged Chinchilla too far past its original vision. I'll try and be less pushy with my suggestions in the future.

hi, I'm having a problem that every time i relog the addon has reset to the top right corner of my screen - am I missing something I have to change?

Here are a couple things you can check:
    • If you used another minimap addon previously, make sure it is disabled or deleted.
    • If you used an addon to move the minimap (MoveAnything!, Visor2, etc.), make sure to remove its settings for the minimap.
Also, you can try using the "lock" option and see if that helps you.

Just a follow-up to this: Talked with ckknight and apparently it's sprite-based, so if you want different colors you'll need to create your own set of pre-colored icons/sprites.

That's correct. Here are some examples you can work from if you'd like to make your own set of tracking dots:

    Blizzard default

    Nandini-style

    Bigger version of Blizzard's

Also attached to this post is a new BlizzardBig style you may want to include for nearsighted people like me. :)

    1. The Button border transparency setting isn't working on the zoom in/out buttons.
    2. The new location bar that replaces the Blizzard one needs the "X" button to open/close the Minimap just like the Blizzard one so that I can "roll up the minimap" while in an instance.

    1. The zoom in and zoom out buttons do not technically have a border texture, which is why you can't change the transparency. There are 3 or 4 kinds of built-in minimap buttons, each which handle their borders (if they have any) in slightly different ways.
    2. I don't think the location module is meant to replicate the location bar's functionality. The location module just provides an extra copy of the zone/subzone text. If you'd like a button to show and hide the minimap, use the following macro and toss it on an action bar:
    /script if Minimap:IsShown() then Minimap:Hide() else Minimap:Show() end

    From an aesthetics standpoint:
The blue, red, black, flowery, etc designs, and even the paradox cube are good. But I feel we are going a step too far. They must look good even at small sizes of say 12x12 in a small corner, and any detailed flowery stuff will not be seen. I think Snago's one is the best here, as it is a simple monochrome logo:

It will be small in file size (as it is monochrome), and it will look good even scaled at small sizes, because of the 2-color contrast. It doesn't have to be strictly black-n-white, it can be darkblue-and-white and it'll still be fine.

    Here it is at 12x12:

One other possible interpretation of the cube would be the Borg. But I'm pretty sure the contributors to Ace3 are not bent on galactic domination.

"Other frameworks are futile! Your addons will be assimilated!"

Edit: Lest anyone think that I am anti-Ace3, please know that I have actually written an addon using Ace3. http://www.wowace.com/forums/index.php?topic=11384.msg183066#msg183066

Sure, it only has two settings, but using the image property of the description option type allowed me to easily create a UI that is friendly and intuitive for users.

    Nandini: Wow, that's awesome looking!
I liked it so much I've started using it myself on my druid. If you can track humanoids, these shapes make it so much easier to tell at a glance what's around you, especially in PvP situations. (Even more so in AV, where you have NPCs and players mixed together.)

Unfortunately, almost 1 in 20 males (and just over 1 in 200 females) have red-green colorblindness to some degree. I would guess that makes this condition even more prevalent among gamers, since I tend to meet many more men than women. For those people, their minimaps look like the ugly, yellowed-out versions in that image, so the shapes help them a lot.

One thing to keep in mind is that if one of the intended uses of the new logo is for in-game icons, you should demonstrate what it looks like at 16x16 pixels. (Sometimes they end up even smaller than that.)

There's nothing wrong with using one version for in-game icons and another version (based on the same idea) for a web site logo. As one example, browse on over to the Google or Microsoft or Yahoo web site and look at the logo that appears in the tab of your web browser. Obviously, you can't fit the entire logo into that space, so they chose a key part of it that represents (and still identifies) the whole thing.

Many of you have picked up on this and chose to use the key elements "A" and "3" for the icons, which is a good idea. Now think of how that might translate to the logo in the top-left corner of all the wowace.com web pages. There's more room here, enough to fully identify Ace3 and World of Warcraft.

(Ignore the cube, I just stuck it there because I can't quite decide how to elegantly stick a spade into this design yet. :P)

I like this one a lot... wonder if it'd look worse with an "A" in it.
While the "cube" is neat, and certainly applicable with the 3... that's way too damn big. I really like the font on that though. Maybe we could expand on that, keep "Ace" spelled out, and throw the spade behind the 3 instead of the A. Maybe use Snago's spade-3 and your "Ace" font...

The font I used is Warnock Pro (opticals set, caption intent, normal weight, italic).

I thought there had always been 3 cards in the web site logo. Or did you sneak one more in when Ace3 hit the trunk?

Hmm, Ace3 is a framework, much like this lattice.

Ace3 sometimes appears to be tied in knots, much like this visual paradox.

If Ace3 is exponentially better than Ace2, the cube concept works!

If I saw this on any other site, there is no way I would take that to mean Ace3. It looks like A-cubed or the A-3 highway on a blue leaf. In fact, on this site, I thought it was the logo for WAU 3.0. (If it's supposed to represent the card suit spades, I'd suggest you make it black, not blue. There are no blue spades. It could just as well be a blue leaf! Black is the new blue, trust me. :P)

Why exactly does Ace3 need a logo? What will you be branding with it? Mousepads? Coffee mugs? :)
