So to sum it up: i would like to help, but i have no idea how to clean my data or prevent more wrong entries in the future.

Don't worry about it. With v1.8 those entries will be cleaned automatically and they will disappear from your database when synchronizing. Don't try to erase them manually.

Even if zone names are the same, I can blacklist entries by category name or quest name. It can and will be done in v1.8.

its not necessary thst the user does know what data he is sending. e.g. i am using a multi language

Thats why CMT shows what has been imported. It shouldn't be too difficult to quickly review the data before syncing. French and Deutch is easy to spot because of those funny letters, and usually sorting rows by doubleclicking columns places them as the first or as the last in the list.

If anyone has troubles with checking the data before synchronizing, please forget synchronizing in the first place! Just import the file attachments from the first post of this topic. That doesn't harm other users.

Just downloaded and synced my DB and i noticed some french data in the QuestObjectives file. Am assuming you will clean it up, but in such cases, how to i remove or re sync my data once the cleaned DB is up? Can i just delete my current Questobjectives and export a new one from the server?

    Hi!

Thanks for reporting. When you synchronized last time your new entries were stored to server so it is safe to delete the faulty QuestObjectives.lua and synchronize a new one from the server. The server is now cleaned up.

I will have to think about how to make it easier for users to get rid of foreign data and prevent the same entries getting synchronized back to server. Would be so much easier if everyone checked their data before syncing :(

The faulty data was uploaded in:
    2007-06-18-235628_200.153.130.XX_QuestObjectives_Both.lua.zip

    And it contained rows like:

The user in question is now blacklisted.

Please check that you don't have such items in your QuestObjectives data before synchronizing.

EDIT: I will add a list uploaded foreign zones to CMT application. Rows belonging to these zones will be automagically removed when synchronizing, making it much easier for users to recover from faulty data. This will be in v1.8.

What would you need, or what would have to be done to make such a fantastic tool work for MOBINFO and Auctioneer ? (I know you called it CARTOGRAPHER Merge Tool on purpose)

I have no plans to add support for MOBINFO or Auctioneer.

CMT was born because there was high demand for Cartographer_QuestObjectives db merge tool. People were actively requesting for such in these forums. I had also personal interest in making CMT because I'm a great fan of QuestObjectives and Quests which have helped leveling up my alts much faster.

At some point I asked if there were any other Cartographer addons that would need similar database merging and received no new requests at all. Personally I have no such needs either - nor for any other addon's dbs.

So what would have to be done to make CMT to work with MOBINFO and Auctioneer? Nothing. It just won't happen. The merge tool for these addons must be implemented by someone who is motivated enough to invest time in developing.

I have received private messages about passing CMT source code to such projects but it wouldn't be feasible. The development environment that I have chosen is not necessarily optimal for other projects and a database merging tool - which in nutshell is just a parser and an exporter - is so trivial that it should be written from scratch.

Let me explain why writing Auctioneer merge tool with CMT as the codebase wouldn't make much sense:

CMT was designed to be used for collecting a huge database with the support of community. That's why it was written in Java with JavaWebStart (easy to update CMT without bothering users with frequent reinstalling), client/server (for distributing/storing collected data) etc.

Auctioneer data is dynamic and realm economy specific so you wouldn't collect it with others. There is no need for Java/JavaWebStart (only local users) or client/server. It would be much better to design that kind of tool as a C++ console application or implement merging by tweaking the original addon.

    CMT v1.7 is live!

I have merged 300+ databases that have been uploaded lately to server and updated attachments in the first post of this topic. From now on there is no need to approve uploads as they are merged to CMT server realtime (= no more waiting for you!).

I will still monitor that people are not synchronizing thrash to CMT server. To make my point clear, I have already blacklisted users who uploaded Deutch/French data. Remember to check that your database contains only ENGLISH data before synchronizing or you will be unable to synchronize anymore.

CMT application size has grown from 70kb to 900kb. This is because client<->server traffic has been minimized by attaching "base" database for each supported database type. Only changes to the "base" database will be downloaded/uploaded when synchronizing. You will always be able to download database changes from the server even if you have no new data to upload.

correct - the cleanup module is per-database , tho i may be wrong, but it only deletes notes near each other if it's the same thing. so objectives of different quests near each other won't be affected... least they shouldn't be :D

CMT is currently storing only three locations per faction+zone+quest+level+objective. It is not checked if those three locations are within 10 yards. This is the only case that could be helped by cleaning notes.

I consider checking distances of those three locations as quite low priority stuff and I will take care of that in CMT duplicate checks when I get to optimizing things. Meanwhile I don't encourage using cleaning addons as I'm not fully aware of what they actually remove.

they are near alliance data, or vice versa. But what we want is to remove Horde notes close to Horde notes and Alliance notes close to Alliance notes.

Or maybe I misunderstood both of you. :-)

You understood me fine :). Just to make it even more complicated: I'm not agreeing to remove Horde notes close to Horde notes in the same zone IF they belong to a different quest and objective :).

what cart cleanup does is remove notes of the same name / description that are with in a certain distance from each other.

But wasn't your point that Horde data interferes with Alliance data? If it was, then I don't mind :). Even if horde note is exactly in the same position as the alliance note, it must exist separately for both factions.

Or did you mean something else with "Alliance and horde markers are covering each other up"?

would like to recommend that you run Cartographer Cleanup both before and after you update and also on the master DB..

it appears that Alliance and horde markers are covering each other up..

CMT handles Horde and Alliance data completely separately just like they are presented in Quests and QuestObjectives database files. If Horde and Alliance have the same quest with the same object in the same location, it will be included both in Horde and in Alliance data.

If Cartographer Cleanup only removes the data which has the same location and doesn't care about which faction the data belongs to, it would remove Horde or Alliance part of that common quest. So no, I'm not planning to use it.

Players are still able to - and they should - export for the faction that they are using in the game.

When you start the porgramm and there could be a Question where you can choose the language of your WoW Client. So you can sync the database with other databases in different languages.

    Hi!

Localization is not really the hot potato yet as I'm still working with v1.7.

Support to other languages will be added in the simpliest possible way in the beginning. Each language will have a dedicated server database URL. If you want to speed up localization support after v1.7, please post me an example database in a private message.

How much of the "quest pool" do you think is already covered? Roughly?

I have no idea. At least http://www.wowhead.com/?quests has 5800+ quests listed but I don't know if they are all valid.

    Hi everyone!

CMT server has received 90+ uploaded databases today and the rate seems to be increasing daily. New data is always welcome, but approving all those files manually is becoming very time consuming. This requires a change in the current approval process.

Starting from CMT v1.7 synchronized (uploaded) databases will be merged to server database automagically after upload. This will have three consequences:
+ Server side runs with zero management \o/
+ Server side database will always be up to date
    - Server side database may contain thrash data such as localized content

I will continue to update file attachments in the first post weekly. At the same time I will clean out trash data from server database and add responsible IP-addresses to server side blacklist. So please be careful what you synchronize to server ;)

If anyone has suggestions regarding CMT server side changes, please speak up.

Basically I have a minor quibble with all of the extra data that is loaded into memory without it really being needed. While in some ways its nice to have a complete database, I'm not going to be running around Loch Modan anytime soon, so having all of that data loaded into memory just slows me

Hello and thanks for your feedback.

It is true that databases are consuming a lot of memory. For example CMT's current alliance Quests+QuestObjectives take about 10 MB in game.

In SW designer's point of view the correct place to optimize in-game memory usage would be in addons. It would be much more convenient to process lua during every zone change and use only active zone data. That way users wouldn't have to micromanage database files outside the game for reducing memory usage. It has been a while since I did lua so I'm not sure if that is currently possible though, or if addon devs are even interested in such optimization.

This CMT feature (level filters) has been booked, but it is not very high in the current priority list.

What I ask is this: is there a way to make CMT keep indexes when importing using the sync feature?

This is now implemented in the v1.6 CMT.

If you want to keep your Cartographer_Quests indeces, remember to import your WOW Cartographer_Quests.lua as the first database to CMT. After that you can merge others or synchronize without losing your quest states.

Any guess when it will be possible to merge databases from other languages? :)

    Hi Ayindi!

As far as I know you can already merge databases from other languages (but you really shouldn't synchronize them!!!). If you are not able to merge, there is a bug in CMT and I would need an example database file for sorting that out. But merging really should work already.

CMT maturity is not in such level yet that I could consider adding synchronizing servers to other languages. When upload approving automation tools are done it would be possible to add them without too much trouble. If you are using localized WOW and would like to be able to synchronize, please send me a private message and tell me the language you are using.
