That's why xbeeps said that learning by fixing a broken addon will be painful: FuBar is quite complex and you don't know how it works, so you don't know what could break or what to check for bugs, let alone the fact you have almost no programming experience. You will really have a hard time fixing it, if you ever success. IMO you should find a simpler task to start with.

Hello Adirelle: Yes, I have decided to start with a much simpler and smaller addon, and using my WoW programming book and wowwiki as a reference guide. I believe I've got a couple of addons other authors have suggested to me in the WoWUI forums to work with, but I'm still interested in learning how to fix things, and this thread (for the most part) stayed on topic.

Xinhuan: You know, I saw that LibRockConfig was putting out errors (tossed in there with my routes, cartographer, and others on ptr lol) but I wasn't sure if that would be a problem or not, as I'm still ignorant of what Libs are really for... I just know that when I download some addons, they say "You also need <this> Lib to make it work" just not how... I probably should have re-read the info for FuBar. Thank you ^^ At least that gives a reason why FuBar wouldn't show panels, yet still not throw out its own error.

I thought BugSack put out all errors that were reported, but with FuBar not showing panels and no errors, was starting to wonder.... lets say its the latter, and FuBar just is not working properly due to whatever changes by Blizz and it's not reporting an error (I tripple checked BugSack to be sure I didn't miss anything..). How would you go about fixing it? Just cross check all the api in fubar vs what blizz posts that has changed?

Ok Phanx.. question about Broker2FuBar... I installed it and see all the Broker2<name>'s there, but what it does (at least that I can see) is list the errors of all my fubar plugins, but not any errors for FuBar itself. The plugins on ptr are working as normal, but they're all on my minimap because I have no panels for FuBar.. does that make sense? That's where my post originated from: I can't get FuBar to show panels on the PTR for the plugins

Aha! That would explain why BugSack didn't list errors with FuBar when it had to have had errors because it wasn't showing... thank you Phanx, I appreciate it. Even if I don't get my feet wet with FuBar, it'll still help to have something to show me errors so I can report back to the author. Cheers!

I understand what you mean about not working on an addon that is currently not working, but I thought that while it was working on live but not on PTR that would be ideal as it'll give me a chance to see how to fix one directly when it 'breaks' with new patch/API.

On another forum, they said to use an addon like bugsack (which I have) to find the error and update API accordingly in the .toc, but the only problem I have is that my bugsack does not show any errors for FuBar on the PTR.

    Cheers!

    Hi guys,

First let me start off by saying, the information I'm gathering is not to attempt to rip off other addon authors/dev's. (As someone so politely asked me in another forum)

What I'm trying to find out is: How do you update an addon to be compatible with the current WoW release?

I've searched google and forums, but usually what I find is "just change xxxxx in the .toc file" and I know this to not be what I am looking for. Currently, I own "World of Warcraft Programming" and am trying to learn XML/LUA so that eventually I may create my own addons, and while the book is great, as are websites, I find I learn better by looking at other works already working. I'm on the PTR and right now all of my addons I have work, with the exception of FuBar. I have all of the little plugins for FuBar, but the bars themselves do not show up. It is quite possible that the author of FuBar will update for patch 3.2, but I've chosen that as my "Lets look at this and try to figure out how to make it work" piece.

The only programming I'm familiar with is HTML and a little CSS from designing websites. I learned HTML by looking at others' codes and 'tweaking' it to make it do what I want, if that makes any sense? Now I can write a full website without having to cross-reference any other sites. That's how I learn.

Apologies for being so verbose! If anyone is able to help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I know from the book and other sites that Blizzard changes/updates the API (which I have yet to figure out completely) and that is what usually needs to be updated to make an addon compatible with the latest WoW version, but I have no clue how to go about doing that. Until I can figure it out, I'm not comfortable creating my own addons, as I know firsthand how fustrating it is to find a great addon only for the author to let it go..

    Many thanks,

    Chance

I'm not getting any error messages, but with the latest update, whenever I zone into a dungeon, all right-click drop downs stop working. I can zone out, right click player portrait and it works fine, but as soon as back in the dungeon, no good. I thought it may be an issue with zoning (not sure how) so I hearthed, still able to use drop downs, took a portal to SW, still able to use drop downs. When I went into Stocks, no drop downs.

Other than that great addon, still love it after all these years ^.^
