Well, here's my UI, please be gentle! I keep quite a bit default when not in a raid. Haven't raided since March when my guild fell apart, but for raids I use praid, in groups I just stick with the default frames. Hey, I like them!
Not too cluttered imho. Works for me!

Well, to be totally honest, if a bar-shaped addon doesn't support LSM, I either don't use it, or spend my own time hacking the addon to support LSM, so that all of the bars in my UI can match. This is probably the single biggest reason I continue to use Quartz (the other biggie being the Tradeskill module), rather than switching to a more lightweight castbar addon -- it supports LSM, so I can choose any of the large number of fonts and textures I've added to SharedMedia (via the MyMedia file/feature). Although Quartz otherwise does more than I need, and I wouldn't mind using something smaller (and actively supported by its author), the effort of adding all of my fonts and textures to another addon, or adding LSM to another addon so I can access these fonts and textures, isn't worth the small benefit I'd gain.
Lol, not sure eCastingBar would qualify as smaller; most people moved away from ECB to Quartz "because it's Ace".
I'll tell you what, Phanx: I'm planning on overhauling eCB for 3.0, and doing away with my options menu and incorporating the one Blizzard introduced in 2.4, so I'll try and add LibSharedMedia3 at that time. You've made an argument I can understand: being graphically compatible with your other addons. I can dig that.

Doesn't this imply that Blizzard "owns" the rights to the addons any of us write? (And to avoid anything bad, I am just curious about this.)
I believe they are claiming copyright to their OWN applets that may be part of the program, like Warden.
Btw, regarding derivative works: The quote before defined what makes a derivative work copyrightable in it's own right, HOWEVER, that does not supersede the copyright of the original author.
Example: If I write a full length novel about Harry Potter in College, I can claim copyright on my work, but since it is a derivative work, I cannot publish it without permission from J.K. Rowling, because she owns the original copyright. *SHE* cannot publish my book either, nor use any characters I created myself, because those belong to me. In effect, I've just written a useless piece of fanfic.
So in this example, Mazzle cannot claim copyright to DaPortrait, because it's sufficiently changed to be it's own program. However, DaPortrait still violates Mazzle's copyright, and IMHO should be removed if Mazzle insists on it.
Jul 26, 2008The problem is, my addon has all the code I need to use textures. It has 23 embedded textures already, all very small, and I was merely wanting to add 6-8 more from the SharedMedia file. I don't want to use the code from SharedMedia, just the raw texture files (and not even all of those). It takes about 10 seconds to add a new texture into the database, I don't want to rewrite it just to be compatible with an embedded library that I don't need.Posted in: General Chat
I appreciate the suggestions to not re-invent the wheel, but that wheel was re-invented long ago, right now it's just a matter of putting a new set of rims in. =)
I got the answer, thank you Elsia. I'm going to assume the texture files are "general purpose", unless a specific author objects.
Jul 26, 2008Posted in: General ChatWhy don't you just use the library like every other addon in the world?
Because I don't want the whole library. To do that, I would have to add in LibSharedMedia-3.0, then SharedMedia, all to use 6-7 textures with a combined space of around 200kb.
If they were integral to my addon, I'd be all for it, but it's adding a dependency on an outside library (meaning I have to maintain compatibility) all for what amounts to giving the users a few more options.
So, does anyone know who I should ask for permission to use those textures?
Jul 26, 2008I have a question regarding some of the textures in SharedMedia. Is there a list of "authors" for these textures, or people whose permission I could request to use said textures? My addon does not use Ace, and doesn't NEED those textures, but I would like to set them up as options for people to use as background textures, beyond the 10 or so that I already have listed.Posted in: General Chat
I have no desire to appropriate someone else's work (at least, not without permission/credit), but I'm wondering if using the files from a publicly offered Media library without actually using the Library itself would be ok.
(The addon in question is a casting bar addon)
