I'd rather have a desktop replacement laptop -- dual/quad core, 4+GB RAM, huge hard drive (or RAID set), 17"+ wide display -- and a Blackberry to carry around 24/7. I'd much rather have to search for an outlet on the very rare emergency that I need my laptop for more than an hour than not have the power to do what I need on the hardware. One laptop that can be docked into a multi display, external keyboard/mouse and rest of system peripherals at home and office that I can do EVERYTHING on. Keeping data in sync on multiple platforms is a PITA. Being able to play with all my normal settings while waiting on the completion of those 8 hour system change marathons on Sunday is well worth the sacrifices to me.
Netbooks just don't make any sense to me and don't have any chance of getting a purchase. Even at 10" they are still to big to be pocketable and if it's just random web browsing and e-mail my Blackberry is always with me and does that well enough.
I've got a USB2 based video card now that is functional, but isn't fast enough to do any real graphics on -- good enough for a 3rd monitor though. Until/unless they make the external video system's attachment back to the system something that comes standard on a desktop (maybe USB3 will be fast enough) they'll remain a niche market and priced out of most peoples budgets.

Dec 31, 2008I didn't really think much about it, but when I first went to Northrend none of the new mining/herb nodes showed up and I had to tell GatherMate to import the Northrend data on one of the GatherMate options pages. Once I did that they showed up and the Routes was able to generate the routes normally. Might apply here as well.Posted in: General AddOns
Nov 22, 2008Graphpaper and Align accomplish the same thing as far as actually locating the 3 Button Bins. The problem is when you put an addon in the center bar that isn't a fixed length -- think ExperienceFu, GrindStatus, LocationFu, etc. Fubar has a center option that will keep the centered addons in the actual center regardless of their length at any time. Button Bin can't emulate this as you have to left or right align the center bar. If you align it properly for the shortest possiblity it's no longer centered when it's longer and vice versa.Posted in: Data Broker AddOns
This is what's keeping me on Fubar. I've tried Button Bin a couple of times. As long as you only use left and right and not center or only put fixed length addons in the center Button Bin you can make things look correct. If not then you end up with uncentered addons all the time.

UAC only has to do with writing files from a user account without access... writing, not running/reading the program.
In a default WoW install, your saved variables are WRITTEN to C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF\Account and addons are installed (WRITTEN) to C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns. Both of which are No-No's in Windows Vista's new security model. This is why people are told to either move WoW outside of c:\program files or to run it as Administrator. In both ways the additional security Microsoft added to Vista is avoided. As stated previously in the thread, Blizzard would have to redesign WoW to get a Microsoft Windows Vista approved logo, as you can't get one if your application WRITES data to c:\program files at other than install or update time (and you still get a UAC prompt).
As you've said you can get around the problem of writing files to c:\program files as a normal user by changing ACLs, disabling UAC, etc., but all of those things violate the spirit of what the additional security in Vista is trying to do. The proper thing to do is put those user changeable files into either another folder structure (inside the user profile structure is the "proper" place), but, as stated, that would require a redesign of WoW.
Personally, turning off UAC is one of the first things I do on a Vista machine, along with several other options that effect my ability to make Vista work the way I want instead of the way Microsoft wants. But, as also stated in this thread I take responsibility for my actions and know what I'm doing, many -- if not most -- don't/won't do that.
Boiled down, Blizzard SHOULD redesign WoW, but I doubt they will as they are big enough to not worry about not having a "Designed for Vista" logo on their boxes. Plus they also lose some of the platform independence they have by changing their applications folder structures. That said, they SHOULD exhibit more responsibility and give proper advice on how to deal with the problems that users experience with WoW on Vista.
Oct 10, 2008So, new Curse Client installed -- version 126.96.36.199. I went through and added all my addons that are hosted at Curse and got them in the list. I went to the menu and unchecked the Configuration/Addon Settings/Auto-Update Addons. I've got it set to Exit on close (not just minimize to the system tray). I've got it set to automatically login. Close the CC and restart it. CC logs in automatically as set -- although it does take it a couple of seconds to decide to login with no progress bar or any notification that it is doing anything. It then proceeds to update all my addons. No sign that it's doing this other than the little windows popping up down by the system tray. Checking, Configuration/Addon Settings/Auto-Update Addons is checked. It's automatically changed that back to on.Posted in: Updaters
So, 1) it needs to provide more feedback on what it's doing, a progress bar, another window, something. 2) if the settings can't be changed, they need to be removed from the menu or disabled (greyed out), having a setting that doesn't work is worse than not having that setting.
As I've not yet grown to trust the CC, I want to be able to back up what it's going to update before it updates. The way it is now, I can't do that as is doesn't let me manually update things. I guess I'll start backing up my entire addon folder before each session.
Other than that, for me, it's updating correctly. I've had a few problems, but not knowing what it is doing is the worst one. Definitely needs to provide more notification and feedback about it's actions.
It's getting better ...
Oct 10, 2008Posted in: General AddOnsQuote from SamalaThis happens for me too. Both Hunter and Warlock. Appropriately colored bar for pet and a 2nd grey bar with text of "Unknown" that is always exactly the same length as the pet bar on every statistic.
Am I the only one having this problem?
As stated above: On either my Hunter or my Warlock my pet shows up as two bars. One appropriately colored and named and a 2nd that is grey and has a name of "Unknown" and is the same length as the correct bar.
If I'm the only one having the problem, I'll wipe my sv's and start over and see if that does anything.
The only thing that I "might" be doing that is unusual though is that I have 2 Violation windows open all the time, one showing Damage and one showing DPS.
Sep 8, 2008We understand you. You just don't like the answer we're giving you, so you're ignoring it.Posted in: Addon Ideas
I was grinding Motes of Shadow this morning on my hunter. Like you with Quiver and mining bag, I've only got 3 bags to work with. I'm lazy so I even keep my raiding food/pots/etc on me all the time. So, I started off with 14 free slots. Flew over to Oshugun and started doing laps. When my bags got full, I used GarbageFu to drop the item with the lowest value (which isn't always a grey item). Repeat until there aren't any items you are willing to drop. Fly to town, use mailbox to ship all the good stuff off to my AH/Bank mules. Repair. Fly back to Oshugun and repeat 3 more times. I got my 10 Primal Shadows with 4 trips to town/mailbox.
The benefit of dropping one item at a time is simply making more money. There are going to be times where you finish your "day" and head back to town with grey items in the bank. Simply dropping all grey items each time your bags fill up isn't a good answer. Dropping items that you could sell is throwing money away. Dropping the item that is worth the least each time is the smart answer.
Many times a stack of grey items is worth more than a stack of 1 or 2 white items. Depending on what you are grinding on, it may be worth more to keep the "drops alot" grey items and drop the "rarely dropped" white items in terms of maximizing your return.

I have a friend who used to have a 20MB HOSTS file, all entries inputted by hand. I don't recall his method for making the ads invisible, but I think all he did was redirect it to localhost, so it wasn't nice and clean like a transparent 1px image. But, still, it was awesome :)
It's not 20MB, only like 60KB, but the hosts file that this site creates: http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/ works pretty well. I've been using it for years.

Tbh automatic installation of non-vital components should never be default, it should always be an active choise option.
I to have some issues with the entire system of forcing an install of a component like this and the "uninstall if you don't want it".
As a user it makes me feel overrun somehow.
(Not directed at Kerecha, just a general response ...)
What a proper installation program would do is give you the choice of an installation path. "Typical" install which does everything the way Curse wants you to do it. "Custom" install which gives you control over each piece of the application. That's what a proper installation program would do.
Programs that don't give those choices end up lower on my "is this app worth it" list than ones that do.
Most of the people are here on this forum because they care. Telling them not to care is a slap in the face. Programs making choices for you is a slap in the face. So far many of the questions we asked have been answered with "because" or "because it's always been done that way". Giving an answer of "because" is something my 8yo won't accept, why would you expect the people you want to be paying customers to? Giving an answer of "because it's always been done that way" isn't an answer. It's an excuse and a sign of laziness of not wanting to do the research to determine why it was done that way. It's saying "I don't know and I can't be bothered to find out why." Or it's an alternate way of saying "You won't like the real answer."
I fully understand that Curse is a company and companies are only motivated by profit. The problem is when the companies motivation for profit exceeds their understand of where that profit comes from and what they need to do to foster the goodwill required for a company to be seen in a positive light. Right now, I think most of us see Curse as a necessary evil that we are going to have to put up with until we can find a replacement.

Not sure, but might be related to blocking other updaters from acessing the stuff.
Personally i really hope the final version won't be shoving that stupid profiler addon down my throat, cos if it does im gonna have to go look for another way to get my addons updated.
Yeah, before they said "it's all anonymous data" but now that they get our username and password with all that anonymous data I don't really see it as anonymous data anymore.
I want an updater, that's it, one way data flow from the site to my addons folder. Nothing on my computer needs to go outbound to complete that goal.
Looks like my addon script that updates all my non wowace modes is going to get an overhaul soon.

imagine your living room with a white leather couch, a white leather loveseat, a white leather recliner, a white leather coffee table, white leather end tables, white leather lamps, white leather walls, white leather picture frames, a white leather floor, etc. Wouldn't look very good.
add a hot chick in white leather and ...
Wait for it ....
OK, done now.
I think I'd prefer black or red though.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but every time I separate out my pet I get an extra bar called "Unknown" that mirrors my pet bar. I have tried this on different characters, hunters and warlocks, it always happens. I love Violation but this is making me think about looking at an alternative.
This happens for me too. Both Hunter and Warlock. Appropriately colored bar for pet and a 2nd grey bar with text of "Unknown" that is always exactly the same length as the pet bar on every statistic.
