Currently there is a chance at profit (in the form of beta entry or even auctioning it for real money).
It's circumstantial but it's there nonetheless.
At a guess 20% of new addons submitted to wowi are copy-paste addons.
There's the cases of outright copy, where "authors" have posted other people's addons with a simple .toc /folder rename.
I've already reported a couple of those that got through wowi staff filtering system.
(ironically one of the "authors" banned for it was giving props to Shirik for stating that copyright infringements will not be tolerated blah blah")
Then there's the fringe cases of people posting other authors working addons that haven't received maintainance for a while (they don't need it)
with minor edits.
Curse seems to be the primary source for this.. finding mods that appear to be abandonware and just posting them as their own.
And the list goes on.
The site is enjoying the increased popularity (I don't begrudge them that, always considered wowi the saner of addon hosting sites)
but their filtering is set at the lowest possible level... only catching the most blatantly idiotic attempts.
A simple rename seems to be enough to bypass it.
As I don't have the inclination or time to do addon vetting myself I can't base my 20% quota on actual review of all new mods since the rush begun,
but let's say it was close to that on a couple of days that I did check the 10 addons submitted for the day...
(I do keep up with all 3 major addon hosting sites and quite a few individual addon pages,
so I do get that "haven't I seen this exact thing recently"? bell ringing quite often)
I don't much care about copyright but not acknowledging the source of your work is simply not right.
