To a certain point, yes. Eventually you exceed the amount of RAM WoW will use (2 gigs is more than enough). At that point, only upgrading your GPU will have any real significance.

What's the time factor of the compression? It looks like it's O(1) or O(n), in which case it's great! But if it's going to come at the cost of significant CPU cycles, personally I'd rather throw memory at the problem, I got more of that :P.

Irregardless, this has been an interesting read. I wish they had taught that compression class at my Uni before I graduated :(.

Programming is fun, even if it isn't productive! I mean, I'm sure it's a lot more useful than some of the things people do in the name of entertainment!

Someone should suggest this on the UI forums and/or suggestions forums.

I echo the others' sentiment. I prefer all my mods using communications to use a single channel, or at most two channels, one for global mods and one for part/raid mods. Which naming convention it uses is moot to me as an end user, but if a mod is going to create it's own channel when I got one going already, I'm less likely to use it, or at least it's communication features.

While using a single channel generated off the leader's name has benefits, for some, it has a glaring fault. That is, anyone who knows your group leader can also "infiltrate" that channel. Some people are really paranoid like that. Also, there is the remote chance no matter how complex your generator is that the channel will be in use by someone else who would not appreciate your intrusion. Thus CTRA provides the option to generate your own name.

I hate to hijack your thread further maia, and hopefully someone will come and splice out these posts, but on the recent topic, something I've always dreamed of seeing is a unit frame mod that displays potential incoming heals on a target.

That is to say, it would have the usual green bar, followed by another colored bar representing that character's HP after all heals presently being cast on that target complete. This would allow me to judge, at a glance, who really does need healing.

You could take this one step further and factor in predicted HP loss, forwarded by key intervals (1.5 and 2.5 second for a priest, for instance). There would be a third (and fourth) red (and yellow) bar to the left that would display this potential loss. The bar could flash if they're essentially toast no matter what you do, heh. Combine this with an aggro function, so it knows to stop applying predicted HP loss when someone loses aggro.

Right now I do find DUF's fade out of lost HP useful in determining how fast someone is dying. I always wondered what would happen if someone took this to it's mathematical conclusion, and combined it with a heal monitor of sorts. Now we're talking about a massive tool that could attempt to predict roughly when someone needed a heal.

Sorry for the hijack again! Just wanted to throw this idea out there. It's certainly not something I'd need, per-se, but a curiosity.

Although I wasn't a major fan of emergency monitor, and clad's PR puts pretty much even a 40 man raid within my field of vision, I am finding this mod useful, particularly in terms of range finding, which I can't seem to get working in PR, and aggro detection.

posted a message on Compression of Files
I'm not familiar with 7zip, but most compression utilities offer an option to create a self extracting archive. However, with files such as WoW mods where there are a large number of very small files, zip compression doesn't seem to work terribly well. And poor Windows is too dumb to manage anything else.

Why the specific size? 10 megs isn't a terrible filesize to download, even with 56k, although I see it being too large for email, if that's what you're using. If it's hosting issues, I think both WoWI (www.wowinterface.com) and WWN (ui.worldofwar.net) have collection categories you can (ab)use. Maybe people other than your friends might like your choices too?

Amusingly enough, all my service tickets here at work start with 666 too. Yet the ticket number has nothing to do with the date.

Yeah, I can't download the latest versions of my favorite mods :(. Is wowi really that hard to deal with? >< Maybe if someone talked to them about setting up some sort of testing environment.

Edit: Well, I can download them, but no offense, file by file is a royal PITA :P. Especially when I find it hard to keep track of which ones have changed.
