I can, and am most likely, wrong on some of the following comments so feel free to set me straight.
Just a simple question but as always a search shows me no results. As far as I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Lua as used by WoW is precompiled before it's executed? Since Lua is an interpreted language do line, or block, comments slow down this process? While I realize that this is kinda of a silly question due to the size of the files but I use alot of commenting (habit from work) when writing any code. All the personal addons that I code for myself use no configuration other than what is hard coded. I sometimes will comment out all the possible options for a particular feature or command so I can easily change things later on just by uncommenting the line.
So if I have, for sake of discussion, 2000 lines of code and another 5000 lines of comments will this result any significant additional load times for the addon?

Aug 10, 2008That is what I had come to the conclusion, that the "guild information" window is the largest area that is stored server side. I am able to increase the data that is stored there only by about 20% and it's just not worth all the work for just that. I know all about addon comm channels and that was the point of my post:Posted in: Lua Code Discussion
Is it possible to utilize any other server side mechanisms for persistent storage of data whithout the original source being available?
I figured if I said it that way that some people would get confused. It looks like that Blizz could give us something for guild management via the WoW interface other than a 500 character window that you can barely get some decently formatted info in.
Aug 9, 2008I was playing around with some ideas and testing them to see if what I was thinking was possible. I am trying to get more text out of the "guild information" section of the guild pane. I was intending to create and addon that would allow anyone in the guild to view a larger guild information screen. What I mean is that the current state of guild management just plain sucks for active guilds. I am always adding news and info to our guild information window and having to choose what to remove. Yes, a website solves this issue but as you may or may not know some people just refuse to be involved outside of the WoW window.Posted in: Lua Code Discussion
My thought was to utilize the "guild information" window as a sort of persistent storage medium independent of the addon. This would solve the 'having to be online to update the people who are not online at this moment' issue. I was thinking of compressing the data using LibCompress but this only gives me about 20% more space for text, just not worth it.
Any ideas or thoughts about how to store more info without relying on an addon to pass it on to others? My idea stores the info in the "guild information" textbox which is stored server side. While this info would not be human readable I could request that people download my addon if they wished to read the info.
Is there a way to store info like this server side? Any other places that text can be stored so that if I was to change some text while no one is online others would have access to it even if I am not on at the time?
Jun 28, 2008Let me first say that this is one of the most helpful addons that I have come across in recent. Also, there are just two things that I think need improvement and one suggestion.Posted in: General AddOns
1. Like Thaoky said, can we get an option to remove the realm info from the dropdowns. Most of us with multiple toons usually have them on just one realm, and if we don't then this addon is kinda useless anyway. (Don't need to know about something on another toon on another realm of I can't send items, money, etc. to them)
2. I fond that the 'containers' section is a little too spread out. I realize that you have each bag on its own line but in reality most of us as using some kind of bag mods to keep all our bags in one view and not separated out, think baggins, onebag, etc... Could you add an option to collapse bank bags into one bag as well as the backpack. Maybe options for scale? ;)
The one suggestion that I can't emphasize the the most is please don't get caught up in the feature creep drain hole of death. If this addon becomes so bloated that it takes all my memory to keep it running it becomes less useful. If it could be possible to have separate 'plugins' of similar that would solve the problem. The only reason I say this is I have seen so many addons get bad raps because of this problem. This only crosses my mind because of the recent AH support that has just been added. I really think that a multicharacter tracker could (should) only do just so much, please don't try to do everything :)
Feb 12, 2008I definetely prefer voice communication over text, not everyone reads the chatpane in time to make a difference BUT how many times have you PUGed or BGed where voice is not an option or even available. BTW your example is pretty much what I was trying to explain, any ideas about the name of the mod that was doing this a while back?Posted in: Addon Ideas
Feb 11, 2008I do appreciate the interest but I think that my idea is not being expressed clearly. Forget BGs. My idea is to have, and I use menu in the loosest terms, a popup menu with x amount of user definable options or "text" to be sent out by hitting a bound key. This menu could optionally open another "submenu" which could contain another set of submenus or "text". All done via keystrokes and not the mouse. There is AnnounceIt that is similar, but not exactly what I am thinking.Posted in: Addon Ideas
I think the battelground example was a bad idea but I thought that people would understand that better. You could use this idea to express the loot rules, kill order, CC assignments, etc all by hitting 2 or 3 keys. The idea being able to build these menus from a GUI. If this is possible or not I have no idea.
My whole point of this post was to see if anyone can remember the addon that was similar to this idea since there is one out there. I just can't remember the name and searching has produced no results.
Feb 11, 2008All valid workarounds. I guess I could strip out what I need from yet another mod to get the petbar back. This is the least desirable way for me. It seems like I might as well keep Bartender running and just hide everything except the petbar. My whole point is too reduce the core addons that I use between all my 70s and have just load the minimum needed. Seems like we shold be able to extend the core of FB to include a pet/aura/stance/form bar.Posted in: General AddOns
It's just that all classes use some sort of class specific bar or atleast there are times when a temporary pet is needed to complete a quest. I did find some small footprint addons that alter the defaule petbar and they are an acceptable substitute for now.
More importantly I noticed after posting my original post that there is no support for spells that are active (active spell hightlight). My thought was to just move my auras / stances / forms onto a FB bar and use that but the currently active spell does not hightlight. Am I missing something of is this a work in progress?
Feb 10, 2008TY for your reply, not exactly what I am looking for. I also was using BG as an example and do not think that such a mod should be strictly for BGs.Posted in: Addon Ideas
If anyone has spent any time playing any of the Battlefield or Call of Duty games they know what I am talking about. Basically if you hit "key 1" a menu is presented with x amount of options each corresponding to another key. If you them press "key 2" you may or may not, depending on the setup, either send your text of be presented with another submenu.
So it's "key 1" > "key 2" = "Healer... Out of mana" (or) it's "key 1" > "key 3" = "Healer... Has aggro" etc.
--key 1 is bound to the text "Healer..." which opens up a submenu having the following keys
--key 2 is bound to the text "Out of mana"
--key 3 is bound to the text "Has aggro"
This is just faster to hit 2 keys than it is to take your hands off the mouse > hit enter to open up the chat input > type "holy hell the healer is about to go down" > hit enter to send the message.... ooops the healer is dead already!?!?!
Anyway I know that I had read a post a while back relating to such an addon so if anyone remembers the name or what happened to it that woulg be great.
Feb 10, 2008As asked earlier: we need a pet/stance/aura/forms bar option that mimics the Blizzard functionality. This is the only thing keeping me from using FlexBar2. Yes I can put the spells on a bar and use them just fine either by drag and drop or by the use of macros but this does not work well for the quest pet. E.G. KZ Chess Event. You dont have access to the specific spells until they are active. Also the buttons do not highlight properly when active E.G. Battle Stance.Posted in: General AddOns
This seems like such a core function that for this not to be implimented in FB2 is just weird. If anyone can think of an extremely lightweight alternative for just the petbar I think that this would appease most of us.
Feb 7, 2008I know I have read a post with a similar idea / request but I just cant find it via search or by browsing this forum.Posted in: Addon Ideas
I would love to see an addon that simulated the Battlefield / COD type quick chat message system. For example to say "Incoming Mage Tower" you would hit 1 then 2 (or how ever you decide to bind your quick chat keys) 1 would be "Incoming" and 2 would be in a submenu for "Mage Tower".
They typical main menu > submenu > submenu type system. This would be even better if it could be coded to allow custom menus and submenus with custom text. I seem to recall a similar addon out there, maybe on Curse, but I just can't find it anymore. I just think that such a system such as this, when Vent isn't avaiable or needed, would be much simpler and faster than trying to stop what you are doing and type out even a quick message.
I am willing to even start coding this up if this seems like this is possible. Just need a point in the right direction. :)
