    Ragnor, I think you've missed the incoming heals shaded health bar (I thought it's enabled per default), it looks like this (together with the VisualHeal comparison):
    ...
    as you can see, the health bar is shaded for the amount of incoming heal, see it?

    Yes this is on purpose, I don't think the shaded bar is that useful. I'd rather see the numbers and have the inc heal amount not overwrite the current deficit hp also.

    Am I correct to presume that unless the unit firing the event has an unitid SPELL_CAST_START will return nil for destName, destGUID and destFlags?

    I'm trying to detect when an enemy player starts casting a helpful or harmful spell just like CHAT_MSG_SPELL_HOSTILEPLAYER_DAMAGE vs CHAT_MSG_SPELL_HOSTILEPLAYER_BUFF did back in 2.3

    ...

    For SPELL_CAST_START the destName is always nil, destGuid is always 0x0...... and destFlags are max -integer. Big nerf to spell alert type mods, there doesn't seem to be any way to check if something casting on you (the player) from SPELL_CAST_START unless I'm missing something.

    sourceName is available I think, so can we look at the source unit's target somehow?

    posted a message on Viper warn mod update?
    The global function he used GetPlayerDebuffName("Spell Name") is not actually blizzard function, it's probably from a library or framework I think.

    You would have to iterate through the players debuffs and use UnitDebuff, which doesn't sound very efficient.

    Alternatively you could register for COMBAT_LOG_EVENT_UNFILTERED and work out which sub event is triggered by viper sting. Probably SPELL_PERIODIC_AURA_APPLIED_DOSE (guessing) but I would need a hunter to test with to identify it.

    So anyway had a chance to get back to looking at this, however for the SPELL_CAST_START event the destName, destGuid, and destFlags are always nill. Which makes it a bit difficult to find out who the target of the spell is.

    So basically you can warn if there is a sheep or mana burn but not limit the warnings to only if you are targeted.

    We generally have the sourceName though so we might be able to get the target from there hmm.

    Yes, if the player has LHC3 standalone they will transmit healing info.

    http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info8418-GhostPulse.html

    Ghost: Pulse is a WoW addon in the spirit of Jim's Cooldown Pulse. It flashes pretty icons on your screen when important things happen...

    * A spell/ability comes off cooldown.
    * A pet's spell/ability comes off cooldown.
    * A trinket, potion or other item comes off cooldown.
    * A buff is applied to you.
    * A debuff is applied to you.
    * Your target or focus is crowd controlled.
    * A debuff you have cast on a mob expires.
    * You successfully cast a spell.
    * You've lost enough mana that a potion would be a good idea now.
    * You're a warlock and Life Tap/Dark Pact is a good thing to use right now.

    Here's how I have incoming heals setup on Grid, basically a green icon to indicate someone has started a heal on that player and an the estimated total incoming heals on that player.

    I've used libhealcomm to create a mod that shows cast bars for all incomming heals on a target, and overheal color coding for each bar. If you want to take a look:

    Hmm I wanted to take a look at this but the link seems broken, did anyone snag a copy of it? or is the author hosting it somewhere else now?

    posted a message on /whoshe <character name> (dps, heal, tank, pvp)
    It has to be pulled from the armory in a pre-genereated form because Addon code can't:

    1: Call web sites or interact with anything outside of the games API
    2: Read/Write custom filesystem files (for obvious security reasons).

    You can get data in via .lua files before the game is loaded and that's about it.

    Scraping (or reading) the armory to populate lua files containing a db of player names, their spec etc has been done in the past for Arena and talent stats (see Tattle).

    It could be done for pve I guess.
