I've released an alpha tonight - dd7e31478690-alpha, and as you can see from https://wow.curseforge.com/projects/garrison-mission-manager/files, it got more than 40k downloads in less than a day. As you can also see from the list, no other alpha have such high numbers (with rare exception where one or two alphas stayed as latest posted file for months). Is there something strange going on?
There's 7k downloads in a hour already. Previous alpha got 257k total which is clearly in line with other release versions, not alphas. As you can see from all files list, other alphas hardly ever rise to 10k through their entire lifetime, so I don't know what's exactly is going on.
I don't have any insight, either - they're clearly alphas on that page, and the Curse App shows v55 as the latest Release file. The only explanation I have is that a large proportion of your users have taken to downloading alpha versions for whatever reason. Possibly due to comments on the project?
No, and even if I did, I really doubt there's anywhere more than 5% of users who ever bother to read notes/changelog and even less would read on-site comments. For the reference, two companion addons promiently featured at the top of docs have 10k downloads combined over their entire lifetime - that should give good estimate on how many people would react to any such request.
Although the new alpha version didn't cause the same bug in the Curse App as the previous one, I assume most of the app users haven't noticed that the app automatically switched this addon to install alpha versions. So most of them will still have the app set to download alpha versions. This explains the high download count even for the new version.
Unless Curse releases an app update that resets the version preference for everyone, this will stay forever.
I noticed that WA2 has been getting updated a lot on the Curse site (I don't use the client), and finally looked at the version number on the project page instead of downloading straight from the Favorites page. The alphas have been getting pushed to Curse "invisibly". I see this is also happening to your project.
Garrison Mission Manager says that its newest file is r55. Looking at the Other Downloads tab, you see that r55 was a release pushed on Feb. 4. However, that page also says that it was last updated 1 day ago.
Weak Auras 2 says that its newest file is 126.96.36.199. Looking at the Other Downloads tab, you see that 188.8.131.52 was a release pushed on Jan. 30. However, that page also says that it was last updated 1 day ago. It has been marked as updated for every alpha, so I have downloaded an update of WA2 several times since Jan. 30.
.... Except I just downloaded the alpha straight from Curseforge, and the files are different. So... maybe not quite what the issue is exactly. BUT - Curse is still marking a project as updated on the main download page and the Favorites list when an alpha is uploaded. So, really, I've just downloaded 184.108.40.206 like 4-5 times.
i think this bug might also be related to the bugs where the client switched all by itself to -nolib installation and was also switching on auto-install all by itself from back in November-December 2016.
The client was also re-installing the Ace3 framework in a loop each time it checked for new versions, every 30 minutes (my update check interval from settings)
