Look this has been brought up by others before but, since I am now about to reconfigure PitBull for all toons for maybe the TENTH FREAKIN TIME I am going to bring it up again: PLZ FIX PROFILE SAVING!
How can you guys even THINK about doing any development on Pitbull that doesn't Profiliing first? I love Pitbull to death but I cannot even begin to tell you how much time I have wasted configuring this add-on because Profile saving/reloading is messed up. The only difference between tweaking now and tweaking when I first began using Pitbull is that now I have rebuilt my stuff so often out of neccesity that I can do it in 30 minutes per toon instead of an hour. A few months ago I left Pitbull out of frustration for that very reason but couldn't find another Unit Frames add-on that suited my tastes, and I reluctantly returned.
Fix it or not, w/e: but one day a Unit Frames add-on will come along that will offer those things that Pitbull offers and will have a working profile feature too: when that happens I'll jump ship and never look back.
I don't know what specific problems you're having with PitBull profiles, but I've never had any problems except that after switching to another profile, frame sizes and positions are not applied until I reload the UI. I've never had my settings not save. Maybe if you were more descriptive about what problems you're having, someone could help you.
i.e. "I make changes, but the next time I log in the changes have been lost" or "I switch to another profile, and it resets to the defaults" would be much more helpful than "saving/reloading is messed up", which doesn't really tell us what's going on.
Profiles work perfectly fine for me... just renamed some of my characters and swapped profiles without any problems. Only thing that didn't change was some of the module options.. like having Highlight enabled when it was disabled on the old name.
Yeah, I can use profiles just fine with PitBull, too. "It doesn't work" isn't descriptive enough to get help or get a bug fixed, anyway.
The problem is, that we don't KNOW enough to give much information about problems with the Ace Profile system. I find the Layout/Profile save/load/copy/whatever system that Ace has, to be difficult and confusing, and any documentation/Help on how to work with it is difficult, if not impossible to find unless you spend hours googling and keyword searching forums for the rare "hint" that a kind person-in-the-know has answered for some other poor suffering soul.
Expectations of us normal users for Profiles are simple:
1. Obvious method of saving a profile after spending HOURS working on one. (there is none, its just a "hope it saved")
2. Obvious method of loading a saved profile to a new character. Hey, if we gotta reload the UI, then make that obvious with some text or something next to the "copy profile" area.
How are we supposed to know what the difference between "Realm: Shandris - Alliance" and "Character - Shandris" and "Default" are, much less which one of those are settings were "automagically" saved to? What is the difference between "Choose" and "Copy"? What is "locking Pitbull" before we log out? I set the Config back to Disabled, but still lost my settings after logout. Was that "locking" as someone recommended earlier? (Maybe it was in another thread.)
I spent the last 4 hours configuring Pitbull on one character, and when I log in to try to "copy" to an alt character, it seemed to work, then somehow reset itself for that character after I set configuration back to Disable, or so I thought.
So I exit the game entirely, and when I log into the main character that I created the first profile on... I find that hours of work are gone, its reset back to Default.
Ok, sure I deleted a couple of profiles, but I deleted nothing that "appeared" to have anything to do with my Main character... just the one that was named for the Alt character, and the "Realm" ones... and I deleted them from the Alt toon, not the Main toon.
But the main character ***should*** have been saved under its own name. I don't know, because I have no idea what Profile name it saved under, much less which one to even load. (yea I logged in and out many many times)
So.... are Profiles working OK? I guess so, if you people say it is. I wouldn't know if its broke or not, to be honest.. because after 3 days, I STILL haven't figured out how it works. I can't get Satrina's Buffs to work with the chat commands, and she admits that even she's not sure how Ace's profile copying system works.
Is my problem Operator error? Yea, I'm pretty sure it is, but WTF... I still have not found any obvious docs or walkthroughs about Profile useage in Ace, and the current GUI is not intuitive and CASUAL user friendly.
I expect a learning curve. I understand that addon devs spend a lot of time on their addons. But users spend a lot of time trying to work with the addons, and the problem here is that working with Ace profiles are not user friendly, with no FAQ available to help explain the confusing process.
Hell, I don't know how many Ace Addon Authors have linked instructions to their Addon to the WoWAce Wiki, only to click on it and realize that no one has input anything into it yet.
All the average user wants to do, is find an addon that looks like we might find useful, install it, configure it in a reasonable amount of time and effort, and play the game. We do NOT want to have to dig elbow deep into the code and innerworkings of various libraries and pages of forum threads, just to do something as simple as Saving, Copying, and Loading a profile from character to character.
I can sympathize with the OP, his frustration and his inability to give any information on his Profile issue... because I feel the same way. Its hard to go back and spend hours reconfiguring, without understanding how the "profile save" system works, and if it will work OK this time.
You don't ever have to "save" a profile. Any changes you make are immediately saved in the currently active profile.
"Default" is a global profile that is shared between all your characters, of any class, of either faction, on all realms.
"Realm: RealmName - FactionName" is a realm-specific profile that is shared between all characters of any class of the FactionName faction on the RealmName realm. A working example of a realm profile name would be "Realm: Blackrock - Horde".
"Character: CharacterName - RealmName" is a character-specific profile that is not shared between any characters. A working example would be "Character: Phanx - Blackrock".
"Class: ClassName" is a class-specific profile that is shared between all characters of the given class. A working example would be "Class: Mage".
Choose Profile means "switch to the specified profile". Your old profile still exists with the same name; as changes are saved to profiles as you make them, the old profile contains the exact settings you were using right up until the moment you loaded the new profile. You can either enter the name of another existing profile, in which case the settings stored in that profile will be applied to the addon, or enter a new profile name, which will create a new profile using the addon's default settings.
Copy Profile means "overwrite the current profile with a copy of the specified profile". This is useful in several ways. First, some addons use a global profile (usually named "Default") by default; this profile is shared between all characters of all classes on all factions on all realms. If you want to switch to using character-specific profiles, but you've already set up the Default profile to your liking, you can switch to the character profile (using Choose Profile) and then copy the settings from the Default profile (using Copy Profile).
It's also worth mentioning that using Choose Profile you can override the default behavior of realm-, class-, and character-specific profiles. For example, if you're playing on Mal'Ganis, you can use the Blackrock realm profile. This effectively makes the "Realm: Blackrock" profile work as if it were named "Realms: Blackrock, Mal'Ganis"; you could still use a separate profile for "Realm: Emerald Dream". You could also have warlocks and mages share the "Class: Warlock" profile, or have Randomguy on Blackrock and Superdude on Emerald Dream share the "Character: Randomguy - Blackrock" profile.
Another thing to note is that some addons won't fully apply new profile settings (either an existing profile chosen with Choose Profile, a new profile created with Choose Profile, or overwriting an existing profile with settings from another existing profile using Copy Profile) until you reload the UI; it's generally a good idea to reload the UI after you Choose or Copy a profile.
My player layout saves but target/ targets target/ pet / and party layout always revert to default I then have to take the time to open other, layout for every other bar set up I want to make changes too What gives ?
when I log into wow profiles are default. In the other/layout pull down I have my set layout which I click for player then target then target's target pet and party .
Every time ....I log off and on it resets. Is there a way to make pitbull remember the settings ?
