It seems to occur when the addon tries to load a raid on login for me - getting into Mag from a D/C was where i had problems, and it was trying to load group and raid frames on login. Eventually asked to be removed and reinvited once I logged in successfully, which worked. Same issue was happening later with Karazhan, invites were no issue, nor was zoning, but loading from a restart or a logout was absolutely impossible. 3+ min lockups. Ended up disabling the mod.
Tried using the branch version. Locked up the program and d/c'ed me when I entered an already-in-progress WSG BG. Party frame was active, showing a lot of question marks where the portrait should be, and UNKNOWN for their names. It produced the following errors:

I have a request: Could you commit to the trunk the way you have the configuration options for the FuBar plugin to the trunk? Those changes (compared to the way the trunk version does it) is awesome! You can disable certain frames from even showing in that menu, can disable modules, etc....I love it! I had to remove the branch version for now because it didn't seem like it worked, but I'd like to use it :D
I put the branch version back on my computer and tried again. So that you know: Until I started using this version, I was using the trunk version (and my saved variables from that one), and then just deleted the ag_UnitFrames folder contents from my Addons folder and checked out the branch into that folder. If that makes a difference.
My swatter reports that it's received that "pvpIcon" error 657 times. I had to turn on the pvpicon module when I installed the branch version, too.
"spellCastData" on line 162 has been encountered 642 times, line 297 8 times, and lines 266 and 380 once each. My cast bars are enabled on the player, target, targetoftarget, party, and partypet frames.
And it still locks up on entering a BG, though this time it wasn't a crashing lockup.
woohooo i finally got that bug (strange im happy about that but i was feeling left out :p)
had to relog in kara and it kicked the shit outa my pc, alt tabbed (eventully) to find WoW with a massive 2gig useage hehehe
this is the 1st instance of this bug ive encountered and only since the last major code change (1st raid since then aswell)
just out of intrest andreas what would happen if you removed the raid frame code for the time being as a test to see if it effects the party frames aswell?, possably create a no frame branch, i dont use raid frames of any kind at all (im a hunter i dont need them i have XRS to tell me when to feign to jumpercable the raid :p) so ill happily crash test that version for you to test party frames.
the branch version will allow you to turn off raid frames entirely, so they are not created.
Turn them off, do a /rl so they are never created.
after spending sometime swapping and crashing/lagging joining battlegrounds it does indeed appear to be effecting party frames aswell, also if i reload my ui at any point i lose party frames totally and requires a full client reboot to fix.
guildie swaped to the branch aswell, hes been suffering from it pretty badly, same results as me for him.
on a plus note you new code seems to have improved the memory useage effect for him, so whatever you have been doing seems to in the right direction.
*edit*
i zapped all my settings, removed target, pet, raid and party frames and went to AV, there was a 2(ish) second load delay and memory spike on load on just the player frame, mentioning this incase its easier for you to debug a single basic frame and work upwards.
*edit edit*
just had to relog in kara and bye bye party frames (this is all with the suitably unstable branch version btw :p)
No more nil errors :D But there's still a slight pause entering a BG, as well as the party frames not hiding themselves, even though the option is checked. Unchecking it and checking it again hides them, though.
As mentioned above, the Blizzard castbar still shows, and I can't get rid of it.
I am too experiencing lockups. I usually miss the first 3min of the battleground and end up dead on the graveyard - at best. Sometimes it locks up permanently :-( Very annoying indeed.
Is "disabling raidframes" a permanent solution or just a workaround until it's properly fixed? Honestly I don't need agUF raidframes anyway since I am using PerfectRaid - and many others probably use grid. So this solution would be sufficient (for me).
my experience
ag_unitframes + auf_layouts when u enter in any bgs ab wsg eye in arena u don't get the crash but lag a bit in instance 5 man a bit laggy in raids kz or more= disable and use only ag_unitframes but stil u have huge lag in loading.. i have tested when i was in kz and try bartender 3 ag_unitframes + auf_layouts then i got 100%cpu and the only reason to fix it or ctrl+alt+del or i restart the pc after that i disable the ag_unitframes +auf_layouts and the loading lag disapear then i realize to test the ag_unitframes,they have problem on coding and when only loading in bgs or in instances more 5 man i hope u will fixed because this greate unitframes it's not good to have this huge bug.. anyway gl i hope this help u check the code of ag_unitframes and if u use auf_unitframes test them..

That's exactly what happened to me (not using Aguf raid frames only player/target/party frames). I can log back in if I'm not in the raid but freeze up when I'm in a raid group, log out and try to get back.
And here comes the embarrassing question: Where/How do I try the branch version vs the one I download from wowace via the updater, or is that the branch version? Happy to load whichever version needs testing tonight and try again.

But you're using some other addon to show raid frames no? ag_UnitFrames is not the only addon having problems with this lockup.
It could affect party frames too.

I had this happen immediately after I'd installed KC_Mobility. Disabling that solved the problem (and I switched to MoveAnything!).
