I've gone through the options menu and disabled the guild position module. Although I can no longer see other guild members who use cartographer on the world map, they can still see and track me. Is this option broken at the moment?
I have the same question. There is a person in our guild that saved the last version of Cartographer, just before you added the guild tracking option. He refuses to update Cartographer because of it. With all the changes to cartographer, herbalisum and mining, there are ?s that show up sometimes while he is mining or picking herbs (And no not because I need to update the herb and mining option, I have the latest versions, I update daily) and the best part is there are herbs in Stormwind, Ironforge, and the other two cities because of his outdated version. Everyone else in the guild has the newest versions, they come to this site to get them the same as me.
Can you put in an option to turn off this feture? Deleting the folder does not work.
I also refuse to update Cartographer because of this. If my version stops working, I will probably just dump Cartographer entirely and find a different map addon. I object in principle to being lojacked.
Maybe sometimes I don't want to be bothered while I'm playing, even by guildmates. I'm generally very helpful, but sometimes I just want some time to myself to farm and veg out or whatever. Maybe that makes me a bad guildmate in some people's eyes, but honestly, I really don't care.
And yes, I would also like it if the game had an "anonymous" flag I could flip, but Blizzard has unfortunately said they will never do that.
Why are you in a Guild? Especially with people you can't be bothered with or trust.
Throw up an /afk or /dnd
Re-read the part where I said I don't care what people think. How I spend my game time, and with whom, is not your business or your concern. Also re-read the post where I said "I object in principle to being lojacked".

Fundamentally, in general, but not necessarily in all particulars.
Regardless, I'm not the only the person who feels this way. Other people in my guild feel the same way, as do other people in this thread and several other threads. Not everyone has the same social needs and wants as you do, so don't presume to judge. People are different, imagine that.
Bottom line, my opinion, clearly shared by others, is that there should be an opt-out for those who don't want this feature, same as your web browser can opt to not accept cookies that track your browsing habits. You might not care about them, and that's fine, but I do. Right now, the opt-out is to not update or not use the addon, which I exercise. However, the mod does have other nice features. So when my old version finally breaks, if this behavior isn't changed, I will just try to find another addon that meets my needs.
With the versions I've tried, even deleting the guildpositions.lua entirely did not prevent your position from broadcasting. Granted I haven't tried to update in about 2 months, so maybe this has changed.
Nope, recent versions still don't have an option to completely disable guild position sharing. You can delete the module file, but there is still code in the core file which broadcasts your position to your guild. Why is this there and not in the module? There's probably some technical reason, but I don't know what it is, and despite numerous requests for it to be moved or disable-able since it was added, it's still there and it still can't be disabled.
Anyway, I've kept up with the Cartographer updates, and have removed all guild position-related code from the addon and all its (included) modules with each update. I'd be happy to share my modified version with anyone interested. I'll zip it up and post it somewhere and edit this with a link later tonight.
Not everyone is in a guild because they trust everyone you know. If you're not the guild master then you don't control everyone that's in the guild. What if you trust all but three of them, and because of those three you want to turn it off?
Also sometimes my guildmates are disappointed by the guild positions because it can be fun to try to find someone in a zone, not knowing exactly where they are.
Different people play the game differently, so I don't see why it's not an option.
For me it's less about trust, paranoia, etc. as it is a waste of my system resources to send and receive and process information I have absolutely no interest in. Even if I delete the GuildPositions module to eliminate the dozens of unwanted and cluttery guild member dots all over my map, I'm still running code in the core module -- and an entire library (RollCall) to support it. I don't care how "effcient" it is. If I don't use it, it's a waste of my resources. Cartographer isn't the first addon I've gutted to remove "features" I didn't want, and I doubt it will be the last. It's a great addon; I just happen to disagree with its author on the implementation of certain features.
