Shamino: if you configure noteshare to not share it doesnt transmit any notes out, and if you configure it as such you wont receive notes either.
Except, you have to install noteshare to tell it not to receive any notes, otherwise it just accepts them by default, riddling your map with notes you probably don't need or want until you've installed a mod to shut it off. Why should I need a mod to disable features? shouldn't it be the other way around? That's the entire point of my posting... things are starting to get crazy, so perhaps it's time to stop and think about how everything interacts to keep it all sane.
And with the guild positional sharing, there isn't even a choice in the matter. Might as well wear one of those tracking devices that warn the authorities when you stray too far from home. :P
daelic: in metamap, or ctmap mod how do you stop people form sending you notes?
Metamap doesn't contain an "autoshare" function.
If someone manually sends me a note, I believe I get a message asking if I want to accept it, but I'd have to test that to be sure. I'm using metamap right now as a protest, but that doesn't necessarily mean I like it. It's far inferior to Cartographer in many ways. ;)
I'm the GM of a great guild, we've been around since launch with the same core group of players. Yes... I have members that have been with me for over 2 years now. I don't auction off my goods, I usually craft within the guild for free or nearly free, which is something I could not do if I were to run out of supplies.
It's not about the specifics of my example, it's about the lack of choice in a supposedly modular application. The "core" of cartographer had a single mission: provide the best map mod available. The application was designed in a modular fashion to provide a choice of features that some might want on top of the core design, yet this design choice is now being ignored in favor of clogging up the applications with features that I don't want or need, and can't disable without considerable effort.
If you're not able to see the flaw in that, then I apologize for wasting your time. I will not, however, apologize for having an opinion and making it heard. Yes, I have the option to use an alternative map addon (or no addon at all) but that isn't what is best for the cartographer community, in my opinion.
To those of you who saw around the example and found the point I was trying to convey, thank you for understanding and having a serious discussion on the subject.
This post is much more concise. Your other post had "I am being stalked" like tones to it which is why some people may have (me for sure) initially thought your biggest issue was with your guildmate not a feature request or problem with a feature of cartographer.
Agreed that this is a "feature" that should be looked at and improved if possible. (I myself don't like the idea of my character's name being spammed anywhere. Surely, this function could be done with some anonymity?)
If anyone is interested in removing the guild-related code from Cartographer which spams your position to your guild and requires you to run the guild-centric RollCall library, here are the lines to delete from Cartographer.lua (as of r27500; they may change in the future):
Line 14:
local RollCall = AceLibrary("RollCall-1.0")
Lines 152-153:
local RANK = RANK or "RANK"
local GUILD = GUILD or "GUILD"
Lines 157-161:
local NOTE_COLON = NOTE_COLON or "NOTE_COLON"
local OFFICER_NOTE_COLON = OFFICER_NOTE_COLON or "OFFICER_NOTE_COLON"
if not OFFICER_NOTE_COLON:find(':') then
OFFICER_NOTE_COLON = OFFICER_NOTE_COLON .. ':'
end
Line 369:
self:ConfigureGuildSpammer()
Lines 427-492:
local gname, grank, granknum = GetGuildInfo(self.unit)
if not gname then
...
end
Lines 535-552:
local gname = GetGuildInfo(self.unit)
if not gname then
...
end
if gname then
...
end
Lines 690-734:
function Cartographer:ConfigureGuildSpammer()
...
end
I recommend that after you do this you create an empty directory entitled ".svn" inside the Cartographer directory, and set the "SkipSvnWorkingVersions" in WAU to "true" so your changes are not overwritten with every minor change. Then just remember to manually uptate every once in a while or if your version stops working.
I also recommend that you perform these exorcisms starting at the bottom of the file so you're not disturbing line numbers as you go. :P
It's an interesting comment though: Cartographer does too much "by default".
As an example, I am currently trying to get more people in the guild to use it. It is extremely counter-intuitive to need the Notesharing module to not get notes shared, and it's not helping my cause at all that Foglight or the Receive-Filters are on by default, people getting their maps spammed with vendors and stuff, and then just deinstalling Cartographer out of frustation again.
It's just a simple change in default settings which is needed, IMO. GuildPositions should be turnable off, although I guess default-On is ok there. Foglight should either be off, or with a very dark grey so it's hardly possible to see, you just get the idea that there's a mod showing you the area under the fog.
Only installed-gathermodules should be by-default on in Noteshare, and only the send for those, too.
Also, could you change it so that even with General-ReceiveFilter off you still do get normal mapnotes if they're sent to you by name? That'd help the problem of preventing note-spam but still allowing someone to send you a note if you ask for something.
ok, guild positions has been changed. if you disable the module it wont braodcast your info anymore.
Notes module now has an option to disable note transmission/reception across the board.
I also agree there should be a option for brodcasting your location to the guild or not. Simply because it would be nice to have a choice. Saying others should look for another guild etc is pointless as not everyone is "blessed" with a wonderfull guild you share all your routes with. This is a mapmod, not a trustmod! Sometimes some privacy is wanted, and i sure would like to see the option to enable or disable it either with or without understanding. This addon has always been good since it works with you not agains you. Dont get me wrong, i think the guild position is awesome, but all i due time. If your boss calls you on the phone on your day off, you kinda want to be able to just let it ring wouldnt you eh? :P
However, i have a idea/request.
Many times when im given a cordinate from either chat or the net and i want to find that, ive been thinking why not have a button that gives you a textinput for cordinates and takes you to the desired location with a ping or similar. I dont know if this is possible or not, but it sure would be a timesaver :)

Why not make default settings for your guild and have them install them
With all this guild paranoia and tin foil hat issues, I've briefly forgotten what game we're modding for. I didn't think EVE had UI mods. :P I remain guildless for a reason, though ><.
But yeah, I agree with sentiment above that if you don't have noteshare installed / enabled, there should be no notesharing of any kind going on. Same with guild position (which seems to be the case now, so moot point). :) I deliberately don't install those mods because I don't want the lag generated by chat spam, or the potential to flood myself off.
Many times when im given a cordinate from either chat or the net and i want to find that, ive been thinking why not have a button that gives you a textinput for cordinates and takes you to the desired location with a ping or similar.
I love this idea. Maybe it already exists? A simple /cart note x y skull or something along those lines?
I'm not home, so I can't try it right now :P. So I mine for informations! *waves mining pick threateningly* Be glad I'm not a jewelcrafter... or I'd be grinding your family jewels! :P
Why not make default settings for your guild and have them install them
Is there an end-user friendly method (as in, something other then sending them the saved variables file) to share settings like you are suggesting? If the answer is no, it might also be an answer to your 'Why not?'.
/way now works that way to a certain extent. I've got the functionality in there, but I haven't had a chance to test the coordinate entry thoroughly. Have a look at the Cart_Way thread, or use /way help once you've updated.

Because there would have to be some sort of cooperation among developers, or it would have to be a carto specific thing.
I made a mod a while ago with this purpose - but decided that it wasnt worth the effort. It still sorta exists in SWStats2Fu, which allows you to exchange screen layouts.
Maybe you can do something like that for Carto - profile sharing
wow.. just got to say wow.. to all u pot smoking freaks out there with the whole paranioa thing going on..
i have cartogropher, and everything else enabled.. and i don't have a problem, our guild dosn't have a problem etiher.
hell - I want my map poplulated with where shit is, -- DUAH -- set a way point to a quest hub and flight form and go -
as for herbs and mines, i FOUND a premade carto db with all that junk in it and - when asked i spam it to the guild, it's helpful to them, sence they don't have those nodes.
as for ur "Secret" route.. PLEEZZZ - puff puff pass my friend - enough wtih the pipe.
--now for all u sane ppl, ur right in the idea that the "sharing" aspect of cartogropher actualy work properly that if u don't want to share, or get notes from ohters it should act accordingly
1. lrn2type
2. you're missing the point
3. hai, i'm the point, i don't think we've ever met.
A "Zomg modular" addon that has a "module" for every damn thing under the sun, but continues to have features that cannot be disabled is a bad thing. AceComm having a hidden feature that lets anyone query your addon information and can't be disabled, is a bad thing.
We shouldn't be in the practice of doing things and keeping them hidden, that's just a bad idea.
