Datamining is indeed against Blizzard's policy in "Right to terminate the contract wo prior notice when the breach has serious nature".
This is most likely done to avoid massive problems when huge amount of ppls start datamining and this giving maybe an unfair advantage..like through tattle. But imo, as the armory exists and there is no limit to browse it (i don't watch my char screen like the blue in the link above suggests but rather other players gear, spec, top teams, teams ect). Thus the question for dataminers is rather philosophic then through reason - if the red light is on but you can not see any cars in the length of 2 miles, will you cross the street?
I find tattle useful and when blizzard wants datamining to stop they should prevent it themselves not through rules.
it's a standard clause that blizzard has to prevent their systems from degraded service by web spiders, that is why i don't tell people how to do it, nor help them. i prefer that it's keep to a minimum. with 4? of us here periodically though the month scanning a particular battlegroup once a month by request, i do not think it would infringe on their service at all. as for other sites... well that's sorta our problem and sorta not, we cannot control them and likewise they cannot control us to any extent, tho we should as always coordinate with one another as to not duplicate efforts needlessly.
..btw people, if you'd like to discuss the ethics of data mining the armory, i request that you open a new thread as this dialog is not entirely appropriate here.
It has been happening for about 4 weeks now (at first I thought it was the other bug till I realized it was always the same realm). Possible something is wrong with how the data file is being created? Right now I just get the datafiles with Tattle updates. Is there a better way?
