So I'm a little late to the Ace2 show, but I heard about this neat casting bar that was similar to eCastingBar, but more importantly, it's on the SVN so I can easily update it. I searched everywhere for this addon, only to find that the developer has backed out of the SVN, and is hosting it on his own website.
My goal here is the ease of updating my addons, because it's extremely hard to find them all. Since oCB doesn't exist here, I think I'll just stick with eCastingBar despite it's larger memory footprint. At least I can find it for updates.
The SVN is nice... although it does give you the feeling, especially after a patch, that addons will be updated daily. Sometimes this isn't possible or necessary. However, SVN has it's issues, and I quote from oCB.lua:
Hello Mr. Localizer / Bug fixer,
If you want to localize this add on, feel free to send me a diff/patch on <email address removed>. Don't commit however, since that puts me out of control regarding changes, and it's very common that the add on breaks with syntax errors or incorrectly added externals.
I'm very tired of thsi happening, so the consequences of this will be that I removed the add on from the SVN as people think they can tinker with everything without asking.
This is the final warning.
(This also yields for every other type of commit that effects this add on.)
I currently have two hubs that I rely on for addons. WowAceUpdater is one of them, and I have two or three that I get from curse.
I guess my point is that I've switched over to many ace2 addons for the pure convenience of updating them. I've relearned how to do many things with ace2 addons so that WowAceUpdater can be my 95% catch-all for new addons and updates. I like the new addons better in most cases.
So why should a relearn a different casting bar when the "convenience of updating" factor no longer applies (because I now have to go to a third site), especially when disagree with the author's handling of this entire situation?
But its a serious question =). Your options, to me are either use eCB as you have been, or download and use oCB. Both addons rarely updated, and aren't exactly what I'd call "high maintenance" =)
It's true. I prefer getting stuff from one site, but that's simply not possible for my needs. An add-on like eCB gets few updates, and so getting it from Curse shouldn't be much of an issue (especially if you already go there for a few others).
With that said, Rabbit has posted a dry-coded remake of oCB aptly titled "CBRipoff" to the SVN. You can find his post at:
