I'm a fiddler, I admit it, I accept it. I am always messing with addons and settings and such like, just to get my interface just so. I like neat, minimal and functional. At the moment, I am using most of the CT-Mod stuff, with some Discord Unit Frames and various other bits and bobs, trying to keep as much of the screen visible as possible.
Now, I've been chatting to a friend who went into a conversation about Ace2 and how great it is, but he never gave me links or anything. To be honest, I noticed mention of it a while back while looking at some Discord packs, some of which seem to be adding more and more Ace stuff to them. So, I decided yesterday I'd see what I could find.
And this is where the noob in me comes out. I don't have a clue WHAT I am looking at, looking for, or anything else. My UI-messing days started with GypsyMod, went to Discord, and now I've settled on the CTMod stuff. So here's where I drop to my knees like a sad old man. Please, can anyone out there suggest what I can do to replicate and *improve* my UI. As it stands I'm just not happy with it, and want something minimal, pretty, and easy to use - and apparently that is what Ace can do. Or so I'm told!
So, point me where I need to look, kick me in the right direction, guide me! I can't code, but I make a good trained monkey ;)
The following images are my current layout (on my warlock, at least!) and my addon list. Nb, my AllInOneInventory is usually closed!
Nothing needs to be class specific - I'm playing a Warlock, have a 60 Priest and 60 Mage, plus a scattering across servers (PVP/PVE and RP), so generic=good.

Too many CT_Mod's and I'm too lazy to list the alts.
For RaidAssist and Bossmods = oRA and BigWigs
Viewport = cr_Viewport or oSKIN
Actually, that's not right. ErrorMonster is like an Ace2 SpamIAm (UI ErrorFrame msgs) whereas !StopTheSpam is a mod that prevents all those stupid "xxx addon version 1.2.3. loaded!" messages that lots of people seem to think are necessary when they create their mods.

Which is not needed if you're converting to Ace, because one of our fundamental ideals is "the user doesn't care that you loaded"

Whoops! I get those confused :(
You don't really need !StopTheSpam if your using ace addons.
Wow, lots of really helpful replies - excellent stuff, thanks!
I'm going through the wowace site and looking at all the different mods on there - am I right in thinking that unless it says "Release" and gives a link, that most of these are downloaded as "Beta" from the SVN? Does this mean I'll need to update each time there is a new release - some of which seem to be changed daily?
In reply to ra1d3n, good question. My layout at the moment is "OK", but it's hard to vocalise what I want. I like that my layout is fairly clear with as much space as possible, but it looks like a mish-mash of lots of different mods - if that makes sense? I'm not sure I want my bars spread like *so*, or my chat boxes up like that, or the Necrosis in the center. I'd also like fairly minimal Unit Frames/Party Frames/Raid Frames, a decent buff-timer...
I downloaded and messed around with //www.curse-gaming.com/en/wow/modscreen-5356-11148-1.html">this" target="" data-ensure-absolute>http://www.curse-gaming.com/en/wow/modscreen-5356-11148-1.html">this package earlier this evening, but it seemed to have a LOT of stuff on there I didn't need, not to mention, I am completely new to Ace. Don't like the HUD, don't like my UnitFrame/Target sort of just floating, and while I used to use Titan, I'm not sure I have any need for FuBar. I managed to get some sort of Addon organiser with that too, something-commander, maybe? It let me alter the settings through a menu system which made life a bit easier. Of course, that UI was created by a rogue, and their UIs usually seem to comprise of a very small number of buttons - playing a Warlock seems to have me drowning, and a priest isn't much better :D
Anyways - more help and advice is greatly appreciated. Course, you can just tell me to sod off ;)

All the stuff can be found at www.wowace.com/files. Yes, some are updated daily, some more, some less. They're not usually major updates; most just fix localization issues and such so you really dont need to update (though you probably should) every day.

Just about every Ace is extremely configurable. Everything can be moved around. It really requires a lot on your part to get your UI how you want, because I guarantee that with enough configuration you can get exactly what you want.

Once again, if you don't like something, delete it. That particular HUD I'm pretty sure IceHUD. You can move the unitframe/target and a billion other options using slash commands, fubar, or deuce commander. My best piece of advice is to slowly transitition to Ace. First take out your unitframes and get ag unitframes. Once you get those set up how you want em and are used to em, move on the the next part of your UI to convert. It's a lot easier this way because you don't get overwhelmed and you can set up each part before moving on the the next.
Wow the quoting system is all diferent, oh well, the info's there
The first thing I'd like to say is that an "AceXYZ" tag in an addon's name is no guarantee for slimness. It's just an indicator, though a fairly reliable one.
Looking at your current layout, the sparse bars striked me. Sooo many buttons and sooo few actions. If you want it. Consider condensing these bars until you have few, but tightly packed and well themed groups of buttons. One for demons, one for curses, and so on. I can recommend Bartender2 for this kind of manipulation.
Second, the playerframe. It's somewhat lonely up there, isn't it? It might be different for you, but I like my UI elements all in one spot, so my eyes don't have to wander very far in dynamic situations. If you want to give it a try, put this frame near your tidied up action bars. This way, you have your health, the status of your pet and your enemy along with your cooldowns in one quick glance. You might find ag_UnitFrames suitable for this task.
Necrosis... *sigh*... I once used Cryolysis for my mage but nearly died by a stroke when I saw it's memory consumption. Seriously, I highly recommend to dump it. Try Sprocket to save you some barspace for seldom-used actions, but don't get too used to it until we know whether it will continue to work with TBC.
First, all Addons need not necessarily be Ace/Ace2. Some addons are just good stuff, well coded and maintained, etc. Two authors of such things that come to mind are Tuller (Bongos, Bagnon) and Gello (ItemRack and others).
Second, backup your WTF and Interface folders, zip 'em up, and stash them somewhere outside your WoW path before you make any significant changes. Then, if you break something, hate it, or whatever, you have the option of simply reverting precisely to your old (current) interface and settings.
!StoptheSpam - it's minimal anyway. If you don't want to see all the loadup stuff, no reason really not to use it. I still run it.
AllInOneInventory - Bagnon or OneBag. Bagnon comes with Banknon, Bagnon forever, etc., OneBag is part of a collection of stuff - OneView, OneBank, OneStorage, etc. I think they'll both approximately achieve the same thing, and just take different approaches. Whatever you do, definitely ditch AIOI. You may be able to replace BankItems with some of this stuff as well.
CensusPlus - Is this really important to you? Do you upload your data with regularity? Would you miss it if you just deleted it?
CleanMinimap - SimpleMinimap, Squeenix, etc.
You appear to have -all- of CTMod installed. Everything. Do you use, and need, everything? As a Warlock, do you benefit from CT_ShieldMod? Ditch the Majority of CTMOD. Things you may wish to keep are CT_AllBags, and CTRA. CTRA is a choice you need to make. Some people like oRA and other addons, some don't, and some guilds have strict requirements for CTRA from their raiders (though oRA2 can almost certainly fool anyone who can't see your screen into thinking it's CTRA). Elkano's BuffBar can replace both CT_BuffMod and CT_ItemBuffs. agUnitFrames can replace large chunks of CTRA as well as Discord Unit Frames. GMail to replace CT_MailMod. oSkin has viewport capability built in as well as making your UI look niftier, or if you want -just- viewport capability, somehere here on the WoWAce boards someone hacked CT_Viewport down to its essential funtionality. Some FuBar mods will handle some of the other stuff. CT_BarMod and BottomBar should go away, and be replaced with either Bongos or Bartender2.
Discord mods - you're just using UnitFrames (and library for the dependency). Try agUnitFrames, or if it doesn't suffice (I think you'll like it) Perl Classic Unit Frames.
eCastingBar - good mod. oCB (otraviCastingBar, both regular and 2 variants) is available if you wish. eCB isn't being maintained anymore though, I believe, so it may rot with time.
What does the flagRSP stuff do?
Monkey* - ditch 'em. Another case of FuBar to the rescue.
MoveAnything - Visor with VisorGUI is the closest alternative, but Visor is vastly more difficult to use initially. Disable it for now, and see if you find that you even need it after switching to a whole new collection of toys. So many things have moving functionality in them now that MA isn't really necessary.
myClock - ditch it. Another case of FuBar to the rescue.
Necrosis - OMG. If you -have- to have the same functionality and look, try Necronomicon. My strong advice, however, is to ditch it entirely, and make some strong use of Sprocket. There's also ShardAce as an option to consider, as well as another author set for ShardTracker Continual Resurrection Again or something. I've been able to redesign a lot of my UI thanks to Sprocket, it's tremendously handy.
SpellAlert - Try WitchHunt instead.
SheepWatch and TotemTimers - you play Shaman as well? For the Timers, look at GotWood perhaps, or Call of Elements.
Get FuBar 2, and pick out a good host of plugins for it. There's a ton of nice stuff there that can replace things you have now, like QuestsFu, ClockFu, and much, much more.
Also, somewhat surprised to see you not using an outfit handling addon. I'd suggest ItemRack personally, but Outfitter and AceWardrobe are also good options (and all have FuBar plugins).
Edit: Oh! I forgot - definitely get BigWigs. Best damn raiding boss mod there is. You'll love it.
Also, I suggest picking up MCP - Master Control Panel. Rophy's branch of it is somewhere on the svn.
On FuBar - one thing that people seem to miss a lot with FuBar, is it need not necessarily be setup to look/behave like TitanPanel. You can have multiple FuBar bars, positioned anywhere you like on screen, with whatever width you'd like.
Edit again: More Warlock goodness - check out IziLifeTap (somewhere on Curse) - has "maximize your LifeTap for your current health/mana conditions" with both PvE and PvP modes, as well as a one-key Suicide option to tap down as low as possible then Hellfire as quickly as possible.
Also, you might want to give a look at either DoTimer (I still use 1.0, I don't like some of the 1.1 changes) or Chronometer for DoT/Curse timing on multiple mobs.
FlagRSP is a roleplaying mod that allows you to set your description etc etc for other rpers to read/interact. From what I've heard, it does the job, but is not overly well written overall.

flagRSP is being replaced by flagRSP2. Hopefully this version is better coded. Find at Curse Gaming
That is an excellent list, Zealot, thanks a lot! In regards to the backup - I actually have two WoW folders on my hard drive - one with my actual playing setup, and one that I use to mess with Addons and suchlike - the WTF/WDB/Interface folders get deleted all the time, so it's nice and safe for me *actual* install. Of course, when I mess with buttons and quickbars - which are stored on the server - it gets amusing to log in and spread everything out again! Thank you for the list of addons - I'll be messing with that today!
--
Nimbal: Yes, you're right, everything is very spread out - too spread out - and a lot of those things are spells I *might* use. Which I know is stupid. I do need to condense them down but also so they don't look cluttered.
You're also correct about the player frame. Target appears next to it, and target/target next to that, so I have three little frames in a row up there. When in a party, I get the four party frames below my pet, and they kinda look just... stuck there. Dumped in passing. I too like everything in one place!
--
I think what I need is the chat box bottom left, combat bottom right, then action bars and prolly a square minimap bottom center. Spread over the top of all this (but hidden) would be group boxes, then above that, me, pet, target. That way, everything is down at the bottom, leaving lots of space to appreciate the pretty :)
I think what I will do - as suggested - is find/replace one thing at a time in my addon folder. AIOI to be replaced with OneBag (which I loved, btw, especially as it worked properly!), then Map, then Chat, and so on and so on, configuring each thing as I go.
Another silly question - before I start adding things, what do I NEED in there first? Do I *need* actual "Ace2.0"? Also, what is the best way to change settings? Is it the Commander, or is it Master Control Panel - are these similar things, or are they different? And I will start experimenting with FuBar as well as it seems it can do a lot more than Titan can (or could).
As ever, thanks for the help chaps (and non-chaps if that's the case ;) ), it's really appreciated. I asked for help a while back *elsewhere*, and get flamed to hell!
The other day I started working on a super clean interface with squishy, icehud, sct, and perfect targets that doesnt have any need for unit frames outside of raids. Perfect Raid is really nice for showing all the info I could want as a druid who does a little healing, a little tanking, and a little moonkin dps while taking up very little screen real estate. Other mods like oRa and Detox take care of all the functionality I like and I have fubar set to autohide when not moused-over.
Everything is nice and close together where I don't feel like I might miss anything because I was focusing on some other frame on the other side of the screen.
I wrote in an option to perfect targets to hide/show the frame header and I might take some time this week to change Icehud and Squishy to only show when in combat or at less than full health/mana so the only thing visible out of combat would be chat. The minimap I have cleaned up and hotkeyed to toggle with SimpleMinimap. I keep the buff frame hidden and just target myself to check buffs in Icehud. I keep most my gear in two of my bags and I have Onebag configured to only show the other three so it's pretty small when opened. When I need to switch gear I use ItemRack, which has a fubar plugin for quick access.
I'm just putting it together, but maybe I'll remember to post a screenshot later in the week.
I've been reading over this thread for the past couple of days and everyone has some really great ideas! I was in a similar situation myself a few months ago when I decided to completely overhaul my entire UI. Slowly but surely, the Ace addons started showing up.
Over time, people in my guild started asking me about various mods so I ended up slapping my AddOns folder in a zip and throwing it on WoWI/Curse. The feedback I've gotten has been really positive so far.
That being said, I thought I'd post a link to it for you to take a look at.
There's nothing remotely original in there. heheh. I've just gathered the various mods that I adore and put them in one place for people who are intimidated/lazy/afraid of change/etc.
I hope at the very least, it gives you some ideas!

Now look through any and all mods that look interesting to you, most of them have descriptions and try them out.
Really the best person to help you is yourself, and this is where you should start looking :)
You'll always find the latest versions under http://www.wowace.com/files/
And how you want the parts you dislike to turn out :)

Nope, Ace2 mods bring their dependencies with them.
