Ahh, but you're mistaken. Curse hasn't developed the majority of these addons. Lots of third party developers have, and they had chosen to host them with WowAce (mostly because they used the Ace library as a foundation for their mods). The people who ran WowAce (who work for Curse now) decided on this move.
Which was their choice as they run the site, if the addon developers don't want their addons to be apart of this they are free to remove them.
You misunderstood me.
The ones who made Ace addons are the ones i'm talking about.
I understand what you are saying, all I was saying and Fewyn touched on is that it wasn't the choice of the mod authors per say. It was the owners of the wowace.com site who made the choice. As he said, the mod authors are free to leave if they want to, but it was most certainly not a choice the majority of the addon authors had any say in. That was all I was trying to say.
I thought a majority of ace developers was ok to move on curse. Seems it's not the case.
I have no idea how many were okay or weren't okay with it. I imagine the ones who weren't okay with it already left, and the ones who were okay with it are still here.
But what I never said was that the majority were or weren't okay with it, I just said that when it came down to the decision, they weren't involved in it, as it wasn't their decision to make.
And to try and avoid this thread from drifting any further. Is there any information out there on the status of being able to use third party clients? A definitive answer in some FAQ somewhere, as so far my searching hasn't turned up anything but rumors.
As far as third party updaters, the answer is "no for now", and wether that answer changes in the future remains to be seen.
As far as the choices behind the move. Yes I made the call. It's what I've done since day one with this site. My overriding goals have always been the overall good, and I've listened to people on both sides of the fence extensively.
It is my belief that the new wowace.com is a superior platform and will continue to become better at a much faster rate than the old one did.
The forum transition has been rough, the amount of sleep I've had the last two nights atests to that. However things are coming togather, we're getting rid of issues, and things are improving even as I type this.
I worked for weeks with the senior members of the community to try to make sure that this was the best possible move, and they where behind me. Some had concerns, but they agreed with me.
Yes some are upset, some are worried. All I can ask is that people stick with us, give us honest feedback and watch as things improve. :)
Well I am not liking the fact that my addons directory got hosed after running the new client for the first time tonight.
Add to that the addons it detected and "updated" or should I say downgraded is only half of the list I had using WAU..
As it stands now I would like to get my addons back on track with WAU as I did not use externals in WAU.. an option curse client doesn't even offer that I have seen
can you get WAU back up for those that need it at this time?
I am missing (ie curse client doesn't see) roughly 18 addons that WAU saw with no issue.

For now, while it's still accessible, the only option is to point your browser to files.wowace.com and manually download the addons. These aren't the latest versions - they are what existed before the official merger - but they're only a couple of days old.

Yeah that's what I did.. pain in the ass to do but did it.. not happy about this issue but hey what can you do.. it's not like we can use another updater
now I need to figure out why tradeskill info no longer works.. ugh
Then click the link above it. It links the correct version. I believe the DB changes aren't fully done to have the curse client pull it. Or something. Just grab it manually for the time being.
Auto-Updating of the application without the ability to manually update? No thanks, I like to moderate what gets updated and when.
Auto-Updating addons? Not a terrible thing, too bad addons get overwritten or addons that aren't even remotely close to what I had/want get downloaded because it can't find the one I'm using.
CurseProfiler? Why is this addon installing itself? Tracking what addons I use? Yeah... no.
Premium account needed to one-click update? Actually that's not a problem. The "fee" is extremely low for the amount of bandwidth that's going to be used in doing this.
I think downloading directly from the website feels safer and easier. It's not like any of the addons I was one-click updating via WAU were getting major updates that I couldn't live without.

This, I believe, is due to the rush to get the merger done. It will get better (I hope). It should have been better before the merger.

Agreed. They are providing a service which requires money.

To me, at this point, it is much safer as far as knowing I will not be destroying the integrity of my UI by unknowingly replacing things I use with outdated versions or addons which are not even remotely the same thing. Is it easier? No. However, if this trend does not go away I will manually update what needs to be manually updated. Otherwise, there are other (WoWinterface) places which host release-grade Ace addons which I can update via jWoWupdater.
I must say that Kaelton and crew have done an amazing job of preserving the integrity of the -developer- community, and indeed improving upon the submission process. This is a developer community, but I strongly believe that many of the addon developers were initiated initialy as users via the WAU and should not be treated as anything other than an untapped resource. Right now, I simply do not see that.
Also: since I repeatedly said "_MY_ computer", I will end this by saying that I do have a choice not to use the Curse client. Community-wise, though, I feel that if I _MUST_ make that choice, I've been jilted.
It is my belief that the new wowace.com is a superior platform and will continue to become better at a much faster rate than the old one did.
I agree that the new wowace.com is a superior platform. We can see the enhancements and how your experience on managing the old wowace site determined the way the new site as been made, to avoid repeating the same erros. You have done a great work on this.
Now, what hurts it that the CC is far behind WAU (and other updaters) in terms of features, user control and feedback. And the fact that the API is closed, enforcing one to be stuck with this awkward client, makes people angry. I know the CC should get better soon. Let us hope that "soon" is not too far in the future. For now I will stick to svn checkouts.
On a side note, it seems that some CC weird behaviors (like those dafire reported) are "working as intended" according to Kolie. That totally scares me and makes me doubting there will be "better days" for the CC.
I have 5 wow accounts and I currently run JWOWupdater to update my addon, due to the change I plan to use CC but I have not yet tried it. What I'd like to know is if I'll have to register for 5 premium curse account to update all my pcs addon automatically or if only one will be sufficient?

I am using the client, yes latest version, and decided to add recount to the list of addons i want the client to update.
Well the latest version of recount is r81954 which can be found http://www.wowace.com/projects/recount/files/22-recount-r81954/.
The client on the other hand decided to download r47214 which is dated 2007-08-22, so please don't give me that "a couple of days out" story.
I have been a supporter of all the changes since i heard about it, and was rather excited, but now after this, i am starting ot have my doubts.
Oh and yes when i went to the link i posted (r81954) above i clicked on Install via the Curse Client and it still installed r47214.
Please tell me this is being fixed soon.
Thanks

I am using _MY_ computer. I do _NOT_ want other people deciding how it behaves.
This, I believe, is due to the rush to get the merger done. It will get better (I hope). It should have been better before the merger.
I see why they want to do this. I do not see why they make this a non-option. Again, it's _MY_ computer.

good to know, thanks a lot
(et bon courage pour la suite, vous assurez ;) )
if you remove an addon with the updater it will only delete files and leave lots of empty folders and subfolders.
