Then there is normally "Nachnahme"(Cash on Delivery) its a nice payment option but has other disadvantages like you have to be at home to receive your stuff or that you pay normally around double the normal price for shipping.
That it costs more money is right but that you have to be at home is wrong ;) If you use the "official" delivery service you just can go to their branches (if you wasn't at home), pay the money and get your stuff; if you are home you get your stuff and pay the money at home ;). If you don't use "official" you mostly have to be at home even if you don't use "Nachnahme".
In my opinion the best payment options for shops where you get "real" stuff (means not download-only ;)) is "auf Rechnung" what means first you get what you wan't and then you make a "Uberweisung" (send money to the vendor ;)). But because so many people misuse that (means: Waiting for admonitions) more and more shops stop offering it :(.
And according to hardcash money: Well time wasting is so low (if someone isn't shopping addicted and not fully unorganized) that it doesn't carries weight (I mean you maybe go 1-3 times per week to your bank to get money); in addition mostly a bank is on the way to / near the shops so you don't have to make detours. In addition I think the money loss caused by spontaneous useless-buys (caused by having "unlimited" money with you) is much higher than the loss because of stolen hardcash money.
Oh I totally forgot "Rechnung" :D But as you said already Shops stop offering it. I think new Amazon.de customers cant even select it anymore for their first orders.
And what I meant with being at home was, that compared to everything else the Delivery Guy cant just give it to your neighbour/let it infront of your House under the roof(ok in bigger cities I wouldnt want that :P). And going to the Shop to get the package is .... annoying...if you arent going there before 12.00 you have to wait 30m-1hr atleast here, thats different everywhere...
And yes Kaelten you are right, didnt know that this exists in the US aswell.
Useing "our" EC-Card without PIN is not exactly the same than using a CC.
I don't know the exact differences but the main should be that the money from the EC comes directly from your Bank Acc und the Money from an CC should come from VISA/Mastercard/... and they later get it from you. There is no balance check before the Money is Transfered with an CC. When you Pay By CC there is a balance check before every transaction. (AFAIK)

with US debit cards the money always comes straight from the associated bank account, regardless of whether you use it as an credit card or a atm card.
But it is very nice in having the ability to use it anywhere you can use a credit card.

i think it could be depend on the bank here, i personally get a CC-Bill every first of a month for the last month and then the amount is taken from my bank account "linked" with the CC. There is also the option that the CC is an seperate account. So you can pay for example a new TV for 1000 and pay it in small monthly rates.
bye the way: my postings are not intended to be a flame on curse or someone else. just for information that we have some special needs in germany xD.e
and matrix do you really believe germany is a small market ? o_O

yes.. if we only speak about small fees for website access it's usually not worth supporting many different payment methods if every one costs extra money .)
in the end something like paypal would be sufficient... you don't even need a credit card for one time payments...
BUT.. to use subscription payments with paypal you need a credit card.. they don't bank transfer payments with those.

Well I wouldnt say Germany is a small market, we are the biggest group of WoW subscribers EU wide, the problem is CC saturates ~60-70% of the possible EU Customers(excluding Gamecard Time users as there are no statistics about that afaik).
The question is if advanced payment options are worth implementing for a Website with a Subscriber base which prolly wont be big(>100.000). Paypal is no deal it implement, but as I said before even Paypal is not that wide spread...and implementing other payment options specifically for Germany is harder.
Int. Bank Transfer would be easy to implement(could be done by hand each week even) but atleast at my Bank I pay 7.16? or 14.22?(2 diff. banks) for sending money outside the EU(its 0.15% and atleast what I posted)...but its heavily dependend on the bank some charge nothing under 100$ etc.
But I guess Curse will work together with a E-Payment Provider and depending on which one they choose they might have specific payment options for Germany.
I have developed payment solutions for mmos with different payment providers like worldpay, bibit, paypal, paybycash, click2pay and evaluated a few others. They all allow credit card payment but adding local payment methods is not easy, especially for companies outside of those countries.
Most payment provider do only the technical stuff for you, they don't act themself as a bank. If you want to allow your customer local payment methods you need a bank account in that country. Opening a bank account in other countries is in most cases not even possible without a local outpost of your company.
Some payment providers still can collect the money for you and transfer it for you.. global collect or click2pay. Most of these offer different payment methods in different countries, but you have to pay for each additional method a monthly fee and fee per payment and additionally a percentage of the payment. This will never be profitable if we speak about perhaps $2 per month payments.
Paypal is different because it let the customer pay with their paypal account, and it don't matter how your customer adds money into their account. (THIS IS ONLY FOR SINGLE PAYMENTS)... Subscription based payments still need a credit card.
Pretty much everyone besides some old people(my grandma got forced now aswell Sad ) and paranoid people get their money at the ATM with normally a Bank card combined with EC-Card.
I've been writing debit card since the first post. You ARE aware that the EC-Card you describe IS a debit card, right?
I got a "Dankort", a countrywide debit card, COMBINED with a Visa , so I can use it on the internet / foreign countries.
as a student you can get a creditcard for about ?12 a year. you don't have to pay any interest if you pay your debt with the next digest or have it transered from your giro account.
as an employee with an income of about ?1000 a month you can get a free giro account which usually includes a visa card. You don't have to pay interest.
if you have an giro account that don't contain a credit card you usually can get one for about ?15 per anno.
you usually (as a customer) don't have any transaction fees if you pay within germany. many cards have a fee of 1.5% for using the card in foreign countries... depending on the card you don't have to pay the fee in european countries.
there are prepaid cards like visa life .. but i don't know what they cost :)
