Starting today, for no reason, WAU crashes immediately upon startup. I uninstalled it, and reinstalled from the latest link (via IE). The build is now displaying 1.9.46.739, and seems to work fine up until I try to update some existing addons.
I do not have WoW installed in the Program Files folder; it's always been off on another drive and path. [edit: WAU finds this location with no problem]
Now, when I choose update, the output window spams "error during update" for each addon I've selected, and retries. It never stops, and never prints what exactly the error is. Choosing "Cancel Update" from the File menu doesn't stop anything; I have to kill the application entirely. I have diagnostic logging turned on, but once I choose update everything kind of locks up, not sure where to find the logs.
In the Interface/AddOns tree, for each of the addons I'm trying to update, I see a pair of folders, "foo", and "foo-rNNNNN". I didn't look further, just blew those folders away.
Managed to remove the .739 build (by hand, since going through the control panel gets as far as clicking change/remove for WAU, and then.... does nothing). Installed the .738 standalone build, which exhibits the exact same behavior of infinite looping errors.
I found the debug output file, which has this to say:

Going into that temp directory, I see the zip files. All but one are zero-length files. The remaining one looks like a good zip file.
For now, I'm just getting the zip files from the files.wowace.com list directly and unpacking them by hand.
This morning WowAceUpdater net-1.9.46.738 worked fine. Then this evening I tried with major failures. Upon seeing that the updater had changed to 739, I decided to uninstall 738 and install 739....
Now 739 is stuck in a continuous "Error during Update (Will retry Automatically)" loop.
Here are my other observations while I still have it running:
It shows Updating: 1 remaining....
Main update looped window continually cycles thru at least 3 of my addons with the error code.
They appear to be displaying randomly (no real order in the updating attempts.)
Server Version is showing correctly (1.9.46.739)
Only way of aborting is to X the application closed (WinXP)
Note: I was able to look at the log after closing and restarting the application and not checking my addons... but the file is extremely large... so i'm not posting it here. *^)
Note2: I should also mention when i uninstalled the old version I removed the registry key as mentioned in topic "WowAceUpdater - Common Problems & Solutions"
i tried to update my addons and got the same loop, so i went and downloaded the zip file and uninstalled the one i had and tried the zip version, i opens for about 30secs to a minute and then just crashes... the zip version is either broken or doesn't like vista... and i can't fix any of my addons, it emptied the folders i wanted to update. any idea when this might be fixed, cause i'd really like to do some updating.
Same "infinite loop" error as other have had. I can not choose cancel update either had to choose exit which in turn leaves folders in the wow directory and the majority of the addons that were in the loop to be updated ended up not showing up in the wow addon screen. Fortunately I backed up my folders just prior to using the updater after I noticed that it seemed to have updated its self flashing me a screen that stated the updater did not back up your files for you. I hope that this gets fixed soon. I use this addon daily to ensure I have the latest updates for all my addons.
Another note about the Updater - Is there anything available that would only download the "Stable" versions of addons?
Ok so that was a silly question. Let me re-word that. Is there an Updater available that would allow you to choose to install a "Release" version rather than a "Beta" version? Or an option to choose which you would like to load?

There are no versions of any addon on the WowAce SVN that are marked as anything other than "UNSTABLE".
T oeveryone wanting a working version of WAU, go to the download page, and download the .zip file with the setup in it, it's an older version... .718, and it works
I just tried my 418 version and got a message that it updated itself. On restarting 1.9.46.746 installed and worked perfectly... Whatever the problem was yesterday, it seems to be fixed now. Appreciate the quick repair as I cannot survive without my WoWAce 8^)

WAU crashing => Uninstall => IE webinstall => Update => Infinite loop.
