You should just copy your game to a directory like C:\Wow, then run it from there.
This isn't an issue with WAU, its a change in the security settings on files in the Program Files directory and subdirectories thereof.
Sylvanaar,
I too am getting this error while running on a Vista machine. Are you talking about putting the wowupdater in the Program Files\World of Warcraft folder, the wowaddon's folder, or just creating a folder for the updater itself? I have changed the persmissions on my WoW Game folder to allow writing to it (full access permssions), so the updater would have permission to write the file(s) needed. This has not worked either. This issue appeared once I updated to version 1.9.45.718.
From the previous posts, I have seen it looks like a permissions issue but I am not positive on what you meant in your response to jamajerk666.
Thanks Seerah for the clarification. Looks like changing the directory for WoW and then updating the main location of the files in the WAU worked.
It is kind of odd though, the new folder has the same permissions as the original one that I changed the permissions on. I guess I can just chaulk it up to the wonderful world of WINBLOWS!!!!
It's not a windows problem, it's the lack of decend programming as Windows Vista is known OS for a while now applications should also be written like that.
It's a security/permission problem which could be easy resolved if the application is just nested in program files. Run as administrator solves it pretty much. Than again you can also give it rights as trusted installer. I do not agree it's Vista fault, it's the fault of not delivering a application that can work with vista. Not a flame because i really support wowace, but i hope they solve it in the future.
Moving your hole wow dir is not a option for me as i do not think i should have to move anything for one application. What you also can do as workaround is copy WTF and your interface directory to C:\Temp and point wowace in preferences to C:\Temp . It will update the addons there without a problem and you copy the interface directory from C:\Temp over the interface dir in your wow directory.
I don't get it. WAU has and was working absolutely fine for me under Vista. Until today! Now all I get is 'Error during update (will retry automatically)'.
How was it working once before, and not now? Or is my issue server related?
1) Open WindowsExplorer and find the "addons" folder, then right/click it and choose "Properties"
2) Chose the "Security" Tab and click on "Edit"
3) Now choose each entry under "Group or usernames" once and put a hook in the first field "Full Control" under "Permissions"
4) Click "Apply" and VISTA should unlock all addon folders and files
Hmm - I'll try that. I'm also having this issue. I thought I had properly modified the security settings already. I will make sure I have by using those steps.
I've even disabled user accounts in Vista - such that folders no longer require security permissions. Still not working. Same message. Error During Update.

You did no such thing. Disabling UAC has no effect whatsoever on this issue. Folders in Program Files ABSOLUTELY require changes to thier permissions before they will work.

Well - in case I hadn't read it earlier (which I did) thankfully you posted it in capital letters 20+ times. I already tried that and it didn't work. This is what I have done so far to try to get it to work.
1) I modified the permissions to all groups (using the steps outlined in a prior post) to allow updating to all files within the Program Files/ World of Warcraft directory
2) When I was still getting the same error, I moved wow to another directory (not in Program files) - as was suggested in a prior post and modified the permissions to the new folder such that all groups had access in the new folder to modify all files
3) When that didn't work, I turned off UAC thinking perhaps that would help. It didn't.
I was still getting the same error.
I looked for another option of installer and found something else listing Java as a dependency (having a completely new software install, I did not have Java installed). After installing Java the regular WoW Ace Updater works. Does the WoW Ace Updater use Java? Nothing else changed between when the program didn't work and when it did.

That's it...
Have fun
This works perfectly for WinVista 32bit too. I tried on ultimate and home premium, both worked.
Fast, clean and you don't need to move your WoW folder!!

My WoW directory is in E:\World of Warcraft\.

WAU 1.9.x does not use Java
