I've just started using the WowAceUpdater. When I first installed it via IE everything went fine, I was able to install it, run it, and update my addons. But every time I've tried to run it since then, it starts up, the main window opens and it looks like it's populating the window with a list of addons then boom.. crash, with the following error:
"An unexpected error occurred. Please make sure you are connected to the internet and restart the application.
Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt."
I am definitely connected to the internet though. If I re-install the program via IE again, I can get it to run that once. But after that the same problem crops up again. I've looked through the forums and haven't seen any mention of this. I'm running Vista32, .NET 2.0 Runtime is installed, even added wowace.com to Trusted Sites in IE (though I don't use IE). I also modified the permissions on my C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft folder to give my account "full control".
Any idea what's going on here and how to fix it? Thanks.
That is the same error message I was getting. Check your log file prob looks something like the one I posted on the official thread (http://www.wowace.com/forums/index.php?topic=8308.160). If so, look at the ad line and disable the site from your hosts file(I also noticed that it crashed right before the ad loading and seemed to be random like it was dependant on what ad). Not sure if bad ads or something bad in the cache (kind of surprised more people don't have it - guess it could be that not alot of people are using Vista yet and it is specific to it). Anyway..hope it works - cleared up all the crashes for me.
Seerah: I checked the Interface and AddOns folder. They're not write-protected and I did add my user account with full privs to the "security" tab of the WoW folder and all subfolders.
yyrkoon: I believe you are the winner! I must have missed your post when I was searching earlier, but I did what you did, adding "media.adrevolver.com" to my HOSTS file, pointing it to 127.0.0.1 and now, so far, WAU runs every time without crashing. So thank you very much! What an odd error, though!
Very odd error. This morning I had the same problem with cgm.adbureau.net so if happens again check your waudbg.txt. Sylv posted in the other thread thinking it is timing so hopefully he can (but in meantime might happen with different ad sites).

I am a complete nub at this. I think I found the hosts file, but it was for windows updates I believe. Can you give more detail on how to make this change?

So I had come across this error recently. It started after I accidentally installed the updater on the computer twice. (I work with lots of PCs, hard to keep track sometimes). So I uninstalled both copies, and went to reinstall. The install worked correctly, but then whenever I started, I received the following message.
"An unexpected error occurred. Please make sure you are connected to the internet and restart the application.
Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt."
So I've done some research on this. The error is triggered by the Vista DEP protection. Why it's triggered, I'm still not sure, but DEP is preventing it from running. I would imagine adding it to your DEP safe list will work as a solution, but that made me nervous, so I looked into the host file suggestion.
To access your host file in Windows Vista32:
By default, if you try to modify your hosts file in Vista, it will not let you save it. It tells you that you don't have permission. To successfully modify the hosts file, run notepad.exe as an administrator and open the file.
1) Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2) Right click "Notepad" and select "Run as administrator"
3) Click "Continue" on the UAC prompt
4) Click File -> Open
5) Browse to "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc"
6) Change the file filter drop down box from "Text Documents (*.txt)" to "All Files (*.*)"
7) Select "hosts" and click "Open"
8) Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted.
The "needed changes" are simply adding a line at the end that reads:
media.adrevolver.com 127.0.0.1
So your completed Host file should now look like the following:
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
As I said above, why its doing this, I'm not sure. I directly work with 4 other Windows Vista machines, Home Premium and Ultimate, and only this 1 PC has this issue. Hopefully someone from the DEV team can take a look at this error.
Ive had this same problem ever since I moved to Vista. *sigh*
Adding the hosts file entry for media.adrevolver.com worked for a while, but recently started having crashes again. Adding another host file entry for ad.doubleclick.net fixed it this time.
Please note that although the wowaceupdater is affected by this problem I believe it to be unrelated to the program. The program is simply affected since it uses the web and has ads like any other web site. I have seen this problem accessing other web sites as well, including thottbot.com!
Kudos to the programmers of this awesome application! I just wish Vista worked better. :-(

I don't understand the solution offered on this page and the link just gives me a wowace error
Edit:
He downloaded and runs one of the classic versions instead now and that works for now.

=) I dont recommend that anyone does this.
BTW Vista SP1 has been released - so you may see some fixes in the coming weeks.
