By all means, if the ads are a solution for the growing bills:
go on and implement banners and the likes.
But I have one wish:
Please let the WAU remember its window-settings. It is REALLY annoying
to resize the window (although I maximized it last time) and the
portions for the log-part, the addon list and now the ad.
No idea why but I don't see any ads on my system. The new frame is there but it just has an empty white box. Not that I'm complaining but you might want to check that, maybe because I'm running Vista?
As for generating money, I will never click one of those adverts. I am not at all apposed to paying to remove them, I subscribed to Worldofwar.net for about a year to get access to their members only download site but stopped bothering when I switched most of my mods to Ace. I'd happily pay a few ?s a month and I think a lot of others would too.
I don't mind the add (although it should be a side-panel, not a new bottom-panel, layoutwise) - but using IE to display it is... erm... questionable.
There's a reason I block virtually all adds and never use IE anymore, partially related to that old hacking-incident which installed the logger from an add you merely had to see to get the crap.
Same here, would rather see a donation option somewhere on this website (not Paypal please ;)) which i would gladly use. I don't mind paying for the service provided here on WoWAce, i do mind ads, especially the ones that have a certain vunrablilty in them like using IE for display.
Wowace needs money to run. Duh. Exactly how does a single advert on a program provided for free inconvenience you?
Grow up, please.
Love, Kirkburn.
Dear Kirkburn,
If writing a check to wowace.com removed the ad from the updater, perhaps you would have a leg to stand on. It doesn't, you don't, and if you don't grasp the problem I hope some day you have the chance to be properly educated.
I don't want to have to include ads in them, hell I don't WANT ads anywhere, I'd be more than happy not to have any ads anywhere.
Kaelten, we all get it -- well, the ones not being snarky to the those of us upset about this addition -- but regarding ads there is a two-pronged approach.
I, for one, can't recall ever clicking-through for the type of ads that I've seen WAU display before I reverted. In the past, I've done the click-through dance just to support a site (please note I've never, ever purchased a product through them because they are so atrociously targeted as to be insulting) but the types I've seen so far...never, ever. So unless you're getting exposure-pay, it's not going to happen.
Do I mind if ads are there? In Open Source projects, yeah, I do. The word "anathama" comes to mind; however, that said, we all do "get it" cost-wise -- some of us run our own sites, ya know.
So, as to the two pronged approach I mentioned, basically everyone pays to use the service or pays for the convenience. And, yeah, I'll admit to being lazy and my limited game time adds pressure to adopt convenience.
If you want to put in ads, fine. General Joe User prolly doesn't care and will deal with them. However, the prong you're missing is: pay here to remove the damn things.
Though...I have to say that I'd have had a better reaction to this if there'd been some "um, guys, X in bills Y in donations Z is how much we're losing ever month" indicator over on the left under "support the site" It might have generated additional revenue to keep things afloat or at least been a "we told you so" but *shrug* I'm sure that'd feel kinda like begging which probably sits worse with you than ads in open source :)
I've backdated WAU (as others have) until the ads go away, until either you take 'em out orgive me a way to buy back that space myself. You stand to make more with that latter option, I'd wager.
Please give us a way to donate and get rid of these ads. I have never even considered another updater until today, but at the moment I'm not sure what other choice I have. Yes the servers cost money, yes you shouldn't have to support it all yourself, but doing it in the way you have chosen? I can't think of a more effective way to drive your users away than this.
Anyway, let me know when I can donate and get an ad free version, otherwise, it was fun while it lasted.
please include a option to hide the adds or ill just go and download the addons individually myself, it may require more time but at least i wont see the adds.
I'd rather not have the ad, but I see the reasoning behind it. I don't like it, but hey, it takes just a few seconds to update the addons every now and then, it's not that annoying. The only worry is the fact that uses IE, but that's all, really.
And for those who are "threatening" to leave or use another WAU, what's the point, really? It's not like you're a paying customer moving to the competitors.
I know they won't as it is donations are very minimal.
But I won't click on the ad either. I really think if you're having that much of a problem with donations, then you probably need to make WAU a subscription service. /shrug
The vitriolic reaction you are seeing (I believe) is due to people recognizing that it appears the "easiest" route was taken to generate revenue, not necessarily the smartest or most productive route.
This is a volunteer project and requiring Kael to produce a perfect way to support the site is not reasonable or respectful of his time.
If you would like to help I'm sure you will find many minds receptive to your suggestions, but you might need to do a lot of research and put a great deal of effort into producing a workable solution.

Just a suggestion, but if the majority of the problem is updater traffic, couldn't something be done to reduce/limit the traffic rather than just pay for it? For example, only allowing updates every X amount of time, or even forcing disembedded libs (since they are quite easily manageable with an updater, and it would reduce the required download traffic by quite a bit). Has any thought been put into options like this?
1) limiting the number of updates - already implemented in WAU1.9 and the next gen prototypes
2) -noext is the default for the next gen prototype (to some user's disdain)
3) also the .xml files use gzip compression now, which has cut down the xml index download size by 80% (addons come pre-zipped, no optimization there) - however these features sometimes require user action to keep their updater up-to-date which is another problem Kael has been working to address (update nags, forced updates in the next gen prototypes)
Just updated to this new version of aceupdater. And updated my mods. Went to start WoW afterwards and AVG immediately caught a trojan. I'm guessing from these wonderful new ads. Since I've not done anything else today on this computer.
Won't be using the updater anymore if it's not going to be secure.
I keep getting this error whenever I start the updater:
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

Yes, you too can advertise your guild (ps looking for feral druid) in WowAceUpdater for just 4 beans!
If we must have ads, how about community supported ads?

pretty much do the wau free ad deal with only a premium monthly subscription I'm not sure very many will constantly donate like they say they will >.>

Edit: Trojan was found in
C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\fmod.dll
Trojan name: Generic5.JMY
Please provide the exact name of the threat that AVG identified - that trojan name does not register any search results on AVG's threat page.
So tell us about this virus.
Edit: fmod.dll is for sound in WoW.
AVG didn't trigger after the patch yesterday. So figured this HAD to be something new. Blizz knows about it though!
