I wanted to know the precise rules governing CHAT_MSG_LOOT in a raid environment and specifically : is the event always generated when someone in the raid loots something ? Is there a distance limit ? What if you are not in the same zone ?
- There is a distance limit. (roughly the same as when you're in a party to get a roll prompt)
- If you're not in the same zone you cannot assign/be assigned loot.

Correction, if you have been in the same zone but zone out you will still be able to receive loot, as long master looter is on.
(I though this was a bug when I did ToGC, died and ran back, only to be ressurrected by the entrance)

An absurd amount of code in the loot tracker I wrote is there specifically to deal with this problem. (The loot information is rebroadcast to others running the same tracker; it was possible for one of our officers to sit in Dalaran as the 26th member of a ToC25 raid, and track loot the whole evening while he was in the bathroom with the flu.)
I don't know what the exact distance limit is. As it's not an adjustable value, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I've been masterlooter consistently for a long time.
I didn't say that you can not get your loot if you get back in the instance (you can).
But masterlooter cannot assign loot to eligible players that are outside the instance.

I have received loot from a boss while beeing outside the instance during kill/loot
