I've gotten reports from some people that I believe I tracked down to the old Curse Client. If you're using the Twitch client, the latest version of my addon is available (v4.44), but if you use the Curse Client, it only has v4.43.6 available. Same goes with other big addons like DBM (v7.3.10 on Twitch, v7.3.7 on Curse Client).
I don't know if this was intentional or not, but there doesn't seem to be anything telling people that the latest addon updates are no longer going to be available via Curse Client anymore.
The last release notes say:
5.1.1.844 Enhancements Minor improvement to application updater.
Can you look into this issue? I'm starting to see the impact in the game as I see people not updating and in bug report e-mails.
I thought there was a post saying that updates would stop in the old Curse Client, but I can't find it if it existed. In any case, the CC has been dead for over a year, possibly longer.
What you are reporting is not a bug, it is a "duh, progress" situation. As soon as Twitch bought Curse and introduced the Twitch App, people ought to have converted and updated because its mere existence indicated eventual failure in the Curse Client.
Perhaps, but a lack of an official announcement means people are coming to me thinking it's an issue with the addon and not Curse. With the new raid being released and people looking to update their addons to keep up, this is happening with increased frequency.
Being one of those people who just been waiting for two weeks for an answer regarding this issue that you call a "duh, progress" situation rather then an issue I have to say Zen is right. This is NOT the way to endear yourself to your customer base by starting off this way. If every damn time someone decides to change the way things works for the hundreds of apps, tools, gadget and nicnacs used I would spend all my time hunting for answers them rather then using them tools.
You have a splash page that appears while curse client is loading, why not use it to let us know ?
You ALSO have an advertising window on the bottom right of the screen once the curse client is opened, why not use it to let us know instead of trying to sell us a premium client for something that will no longer work ????
I am seriously not impressed with this "don't care" attitude
Okay, I have to admit this up front: I don't work for Twitch; I'm just a volunteer moderator. And if what you are saying is true, then perhaps there was or is a better way to inform people that the Curse Client was defunct.
The only reason I have a standoffish attitude to the shock and surprise regarding the lack of support and end of life that may have taken people by surprise is that I have been around computers and software in general a long, long, long time.
I have seen the end of DOS, various Windows and macOS versions, mobile OSes come and go, and to the point of addon updaters for games, I've seen them get updated over the years too.
Way back in the day, there was the Wowace Updater before Curse had their own. Then Curse Client 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 (Windows only) and 5.0. Plus I've seen a couple of versions of Minion and a few independent updaters. Throughout all of them, there were notices posted from their respective companies. Maybe the notices weren't kept up long enough or weren't renewed near end of life for the programs.
What I do know for certain is that in each and every case, months before a version was retired, a new version was released. As far as I am concerned, the existence of a newer program is a massive, can't ignore, crystal clear announcement in huge bold letters that it is time to upgrade and switch to the newer version.
Am I missing something? That could be possible, but I honestly do not understand why the "sudden" demise of the Curse Client v5 is "unexpected" or "sudden" or "came out of nowhere" or "didn't let people know". As soon as the Twitch App launched several months ago, that was the bright flag announcement.
To me, this discussion is similar to someone being surprised at Windows XP, Vista, 8.1, "suddenly" not being supported by Microsoft as soon as Windows 10 came out. Yes, I know some of those were stopped before 10, but that isn't the point. The point is that as soon as Microsoft released a new version of Windows, that new version was the gigantic billboard in Times Square in and of itself that told everybody that the prior version was going to die and that people need to upgrade.
The Twitch App appearing as the downloadable updater was all the notice anyone needed. So again, I really, truly, honestly, have zero idea why anyone is mad or shocked. Was there insufficient notice in the v5 itself? Maybe, maybe not, but nobody could possibly miss that the v5 was not available to download months and months ago, replaced by the Twitch App.
Oh yes. If I sound like I "don't care", it is because I am baffled why this thread, the outrage, shock, and surprised even exists. Does that make me insensitive? If so, I'm sorry. I mean that. I am apologizing. But that still doesn't explain how or why people are shocked, mad, or surprised.
The Twitch App beta, which integrated addon support from Curse, launched March 16, 2017
Full changeover from Curse Client v5 to the Twitch App occurred August 10, 2017
That means that everybody had anywhere between four and 16 months' notice of the Curse Client v5's eventual demise. The replacement Twitch App may not have existed until March of this year, but if anyone applied logical thought to Twitch buying Curse, it was inevitable that a new client would be developed, simply because Twitch would want integration of its services into a singular app that also provided Curse's services.
you're so busy trying to be right you are completely missing the point. This is not outrage about the sudden demise of a piece of software. it's about the half-assed way its done. Why did we have to wait for two weeks to find out what the problem was with not getting the new version of GTFO ? why did we have to keep bothering the creator of GTFO to find out that its because updates are no longer supplied from the old client ? why didn't the old client have any notice that we shouldn't be using it anymore ? why is the old client still working as if nothing happened instead of getting someking of a splash page saying "sorry, but got to use twitch now" ? THAT is the point.....having something that LOOKS like its working but NOT doing the job and NOT saying WHY.
Thanks for posting that! Completely agree with your post! I was wondering why over several weeks no updates were coming in when I ran the Curse client. You guys completely sucked and dropped the ball on that one, I chalk it up to inexperienced developers and management. I'm in IT and I know how it suppose to be done.

There is no "maybe" about it. The notice should have come out ON the Curse app that you were switching to Twitch. If you don't believe that, you need some training in software release management. You ALWAYS notify the client before, during and after the release.
hi......this is all well and good ...to be truthful everyone knew of the change over ...people were talking about it the moderators told us the head boys told us....here is my peeve...twitch is complicated for the person who just plays games....but is not computer savvy.....it downloads all this junk on your computer and most of the gamers don't want that...i understand the business side but for me all i want to do is upgrade my add- ons. So if someone could show step by step how to use twitch without the bull s--t stuff...or make a quick video...i loved curse for its simplicity...of use...go to it look up add-on...download add- on ...done. If anyone can point me in the right direction cool. if not i will muddle my way through....and yes ....it wasn't sudden the changeover but ....there wasn't a notice saying ...THIS IS THE DAY WE ARE DOING IT. people don't like changes .....and twitch is a big change for the not so computer savvy people like myself. Thank you for the space.

Totally agree. I am 45yrs old and not getting any younger. I come home want to update quickly my addons and play a game and go to bed. I don't need all this other login and chatterbox stuff that so many kids nowadays use. Just give me an option to use a simplified version of the huge program that we now have to use. It's actually quite frustrating being forced to have twitch on my pc when I don't even use it and will never use it for what it's meant for. Bitch session over, since i'm sure it will all go right in one ear and out the other.
Just an update on my rant of January...CurseForge...not all the add-ons but enough...use the same as old curse... thanks...to the guy who pointed it out to me.

YESSIR!!! LIKE MINION addon if it only was UPDATED on more addons than dbm. its a viable solution with a little more work. I WOULD RATHERE PAY TO GET THE OLD CURSE BACK THAN GET TWITCH FREE, BUT HEY !! i guess as long as companies believe the right business model is FORCING CUSTOMERS TO BUY CRAP THEY DONT WANT IS THE WAY OF TOMORROW! TWITCH = BLOATWARE CRAP BOLLOCKS RETARDED BULLSHIT - i use discord to talk with my friends whilst gaming. there is nothing good about twitch at all and frankly the way you destroyed curseclient to force your utterly craptastic useless garbage bloatware program i hope you go banquerot
