Honem is correct.. WAU got that into people's minds when nearly every major dev at wowace was yelling for change because that entire mentalit is detramental to the community.
Along with Honem's method, for me it came down to: "If the author put out a release, that means that they did something major enough for it to be now used by the masses." Mostly i put the responsibility on the author to decide if what they are putting out is ready to be used by everyone or not, it's where that repobsibility should be. On the otherhand, if your daring enough to go messing with betas or alphas you need to know enough to do it right. It lets the masses have stable and reliable addons and lets the developer interact with the real testers instead of everyone being a tester all the time. This is the biggest reason I like the new system.
if you really wana give wowmatrix a headache, implment the link as pure javascript inline code, with random variable names to generate the actual file link. your browser will eval the code and make the link. things like wowmatrix that slurp the html would have to implent/execute the javascript. As someone who developed many o spiders/harvestors hitting js only pages can be a pain especialy with compressed javascript thats obsufcated to try to implement that logic to extract a link.
Pure js inline generated links simply fail to be detected with a lot of the common HTML parsing tools they might use like mechanize or hpricot.
Sounds deliciously evil.
I myself use Honem's method for updating and determining when an update is needed. I like the "If it isn't broken and/or blowing chunks all over your UI don't update it", statement as that is my update determining method. I used to be a WAU user back in the day, however I weaned myself off it. Besides with the ending of Threat 1.0/2.0 (replaced by the built in Threat), there is no need to update "just before you log in".

1) Inline JavaScript is bad, and violates proper separation of content, style, and behavior.
2) There are legitimate user-agents that don't support JavaScript, and legitimate reasons for user-agents that do support it to have it disabled. Restricting download access to people with JavaScript enabled is also bad.
3) This thread is for reporting sites that distribute addons without author consent, not for discussing WoWMatrix. If you want to discuss WoWMatrix, make a new thread.
PS: unsure if its wow-pro's addition to tourguide or if its Tourguide's own guides. In all cases I reported the site to Jame at wow-pro as well.
WoW-Pro has always distributed his guides free, thus I think he would be a bit pissed to see he his content being "sold". Regarding the AddOn, that does look a lot like Tourguide. Looks like Tekkub is going to get sicced on those nublets. I think I will go find a nice bunker now so I don't get hit in the resulting explosion.
*sigh* Fucking retards. How hard is it to just link to WoWI?
Wait, they are selling a package, logic states that they would include everything as an "all in one", None of this, "Oh btw, you need this mod from this site and you need to keep it updated too". No, the users would not go for that crap. Not arguing for them, just logic here. To answer your question: "Entitlement Generation" ?
But In their defense, They could just be providing an external / preloaded data for TourGuide and Talented.. It's most likely, tack on the logic above and bam you got a biz model. Granted it's probabbly wrong of them to do it..
If they're just using Talented with a prepackaged list of templates, that's fine. If they changed the Talented TOC to put their name, that's in contradiction with the licence under which I provide it and that's not fine.
What about the "foreign" (aka asian) sites that host addons which cater to the zh* and koKR communities?
Do we consider those "bad"?
Depends on the site. Personally, I've given permission for several people who've provided Chinese or Korean translations for my addons to post those addons on Chinese or Korean addon sites, as long as there is a link to my (English) download page. However, if I see an addon posted on one of those sites that nobody's sent me zh/tw translations for, I will absolutely request it be removed.
For the purposes of this thread, I wouldn't consider a Chinese equivalent of WoWInterface (for example) to be "bad". If someone posts your addon there, it's no different than if they posted it on WoWInterface or Curse or IncGamers. If you want to post information on who to contact to request the removal of addons from those sites though, feel free.
However, if the site appears to be distributing the addons itself (as opposed to individuals uploading each addon) then yes, it would be "bad".
While Stumbling, I came along a Shanghai based site, http://addon.hotwow.com/ . It seems to actually be hosting the addons. They list an addon's basic info, including author, and then a copy/paste of an addon's info. Now maybe they're legit, and just Chinese... but as there is no info on how people are supposed to contact authors for support or what not, thought better to post and be wrong, then not.

That site has already been added to the list of shame when this thread was created.

please disable automatic URL linking when posting additional sites, so as not to promote the site through things like Google page rank etc.
There is a check box under the Additional Options heading for "Automatically parse links in text". Clear that check box. If you don't see the Additional Options section then you need to click the "Go Advanced" button.

WoWMatrix does use Curl, WUU does not (its written almost exclusively using Python thus the various Python libs).

I just read on Joystiq that the original owners of Filefront have bought it back from ZDnet or something and are keeping it running.
I am not sure, but i think tekhub distributes his files with all rights reserved. I don't think they are allowed to modify or redistribute tourguide.
But i think these and the wowmatrix could be seperated in an infrigement, is-this-legal / .. thread.

*edit* anyone have their guide addon by chance? I want to make sure they're not using my guides

I went and grabbed the trial. (yes, it's TomTom and Tourguide renamed)
Because Tek doesn't like PMs -> there you go. http://hdimage.org/images/hilc21onm67yrhytfjx4_stolen.jpg
