Shrug... there's no private info being divulged and the info belongs to Blizz. You don't have much of a case. I assure you I value my privacy, but I frankly could care less if all of you followed my armory feeds rabidly. It doesn't really have anything to do with my real identity so I don't see why I should be up in arms about it. Argue all you want about an opt-out, but the fact remains that none of your private info is out there because of this feed. What I really don't get is why there's an uproar now when you could have been tracked before. That boggles my mind.
This seems like the same type of uproar that happened when the first version of the Armory was released. People complained about privacy of their toons. A few months later not much was being said about it and people actually seemed to like the new tool Blizzard provided. I foresee the same thing here.
Uproar always dies down and apathy usually takes its place.
Some people are comfortable with everything they do being tracked. Some people are not comfortable with anything they do being tracked. Some are comfortable with some things being tracked and other stuff not being tracked. Whether or not "its connected to their identity".
And some people can't see that your "real name/identity" has little or nothing to do with privacy implications online or elsewhere, except beyond their personal limited definitions of what privacy means.
Look mate you made a big point of enumerating all the things you do to protect your privacy.
Now in 10minutes (that is all the time I'm willing to spend to just make a point) I know that:
- Your first name is Eric
- Your age group is early 30ies (exact birth date available too)
- You are male and single.
- Living in the US (Pittsbourgh)
- One of your email add. (and I could probably get more in 5more mins of digging)
- Obviously your main, your guild and server you play on. (it's a rogue playing on Terenas to give you 2 of 3)
If that takes me all of 10minutes how long do you think it takes people that market ids to fill in all the blanks?
And that's for someone that values and protects their personal information (as you understand it anyway)
Long story short you have a very skewed view on what is your identity, what is privacy, how cross-referencing works and why personal data protection is legislated (including digital identities).
Uh yeah that's easily avail through forums. That doesn't get you far. You're right that it's personal info, but that's not something I've hidden...
Either way, feel free to be uncomfortable with the feed. This is still not personal info, nor does it breach your privacy unless you provide the link between your character and yourself. Case in point, if I hadn't posted anywhere, you wouldn't have found out any of this.
Look, idc if people don't like the feed, but it irks me to see people call it an invasion of privacy. It isn't one.
