It is come to my attention that while it is possible to express either a positive or negative opinion by voting on a ticket, it's impossible to express a neutral opinion.
When clicking on the "zero (neutral)" option to vote on a ticket in the WowAce or CurseForge system, it does nothing, except simply remove your vote altogether if you had already voted previously.
I feel that a neutral vote of zero should count! For example, a ticket with one vote of 0 and one vote of 3 should have a vote total (sum) of 3, and an average of 1.5. Currently, if you try to express your neutral opinion, the ticket will just show up with one vote of 3, giving an average of 3.
Demand that your indifference be heard! Vote for my ticket on CurseForge! You're not allowed to be neutral on this issue because the system won't allow you, so vote!
If you don't care about the ticket... why are you voting? If you want to lower the average (which would mean you care about the ticket and are not apathetic) then vote -1. ;)
voting 0 is not the same as not voting. Anyone living in a democracy should know that.
Abstaining from voting is different from not voting. Not voting says "I din't care". Abstaining says "I will not vote for either of those options". The problem is, most voting systems (like the US's) don't offer an abstain option, so your only option is to not vote.
Abstaining means:
"I don't like any of the choices but accept this as method of choosing".
(alternative: please include a better option and I will choose)
Not voting means:
"I don't accept voting as a method of choosing". :p
(alternative: you can stuff it, the system is rigged anyway)
On the no vote vs 0 vote. Frankly it seems to me that we can do better than 0 votes by simply expressing what the perspective is. Voting usually is about coming to a decision. If you can neither be for nor against an option it's best to express this, rather than just state that you do not like either outcome.
In procedural voting there often indeed are various forms of voting neither aye or nay, such as abstain or present but usually their meaning is more about how they count to specific vote count rules or quorums and such. Really the way things usually work is that votes come up when discussion has finished and the plurality of views has been distilled down to coming to some action (and either affirm (get enough aye votes) going there or letting it be).
The situation here is different, votes are used as popularity contest and I can see the argument that up or down votes do not well reflect how people stand to a ticket, say. I have never voted on a ticket, or even more so taken votes on a feature into consideration. The concept seems weird to me, because usually it is not a difficult task to figure out merits of tickets and prioritize them, but that's in my case. I much rather have 10 constructive discussion comments than a 100 votes. And it's easy to comment "I don't care for this one either way".
@Elsia, I can see that but even more so, if you're wanting to vote 0 it seems to me that you probably see a good and a bad side to the proposal.
A comment on the ticket describing your mixed emotions on it would be infinitely more useful than a zero vote, and if you're truly apathetic it's probably not worth voting zero either.
