From everything I have heard, the stuff that happened with this patch was a one-off, with the combination of everybody logging in for the first time and having achievements generated (thrashing the servers) as well as a large number of largely inactive players coming back to play with the new talents and inscription.

This.
Achievements played a big part, I'm sure. The server designer in me keeps thinking "how the heck are they doing all of that so quickly over low bandwidth connections...?"
The OP might be suffering from this common syndrome....
Unrealistic Expectations
While unrealistic expectations have always been problematic for some, with the death of proper corporal punishment in so-called "civilized society" and the discovery of the Internets, things have gone from that which one's eyes could ignore to the present, unbearable state where one is forced to constantly confront the deluded self-aggrandizing hopes of a multitude of friends, bloggers, website owners, web community users -- and the eventual froth of disappointment and depression when the stark reality of life finally begins to sink in.
Just a few side notes. I do go outside i do have a life outside of WoW and i was just trying to ask some questions and hoping to get answers beside the normal flames.

What flames? Are you one of those people that call anything you don't like to hear a flame or "negative"? The reality is that it will take as long as necessary to perform maintenance, it's how it works for every company out there.
*edit* And if you think they don't hire quality people, look here and see the requirements for the open positions in Blizzard
Yah lol =))
Thanks for catching that :p

How many of those can you do? I have an IT degree and still don't qualify for any of their openings
