I've been using Parrot till patch 2.4 and was forced to switch to MSBT. I'm checking Changelog of Parrot as long as I remember and all I see nowadays is localization updates only which makes me believe that Parrot is stable once again.
Just before switching back to try it, I wonder if anyone likes to share his opinions if he/she did the same switch after Patch 2.4
I switched to MSBT. I was happy to see that members of the community stepped up to keep Parrot going, but I haven't tried the 2.4-updated version. MSBT is pretty close to on-par with Parrot now, though, so I'm pretty happy with it.
I prefer MSBT anyway. I did try Parrot briefly, but find MSBT's configuration more intuitive, and didn't use any features in Parrot that aren't available in MSBT. The only thing I miss from Parrot is the continuous test mode. :P

Nshakedown will work with MSBT and give you the constant scrolling combat text like Parrot... works quite well imo for configuring new setups. I just put MSBT in config mode manually to move elements around.
How do you folks feel SCT fits in with these two now? I'm coming from SCT, but the custom triggers I've been reading about and the minor quirks I've had with SCT have perked my interest in an alternative.

man I haven't used SCT in SOO long.. I mean it was the original and was GREAT for what it did, but with triggers, and people wanting more and more, you just cant beat Parrot or MSBT.
I use MSBT, but its only because Parrot broke.. I try and have ALL my mods be ace mods so I can update them daily/easily. Will probably go back to Parrot when I hear thats it completely stable again.

I've been using Parrot for weeks, if not months, and I've had no issues with it that haven't been dealt with almost instantly by the current maintainer (Prof_Albert) who's doing a really good job at consolidating the new combat log interface as well as adding new features.

SCT was the first thing I tried as an alternative to Parrot when the latter was broken right after 2.4 came out. SCT would have worked, but I was much less happy with it because it is far less configurable/customizable than either Parrot or MSBT.
SCT was the first "combat text" addon I ever used (long before Blizzard added theirs). As time went by and I delved deeper into interface customization, I started finding that I couldn't do everything I wanted with SCT. I tried MSBT briefly and found the configuration a bit overwhelming, and went back to SCT. When Parrot was first released, I checked it out, and although I didn't really like the configuration style, I decided I just couldn't go back to the limited functionality of SCT, and once again tried MSBT. With a great deal more addon experience under my belt, the configuration was no longer daunting, and I've been very happy with it.
Long story short, if you just need the basics, try SCT. If you need more customization/flexibility, try MSBT or Parrot and see which suits you better.
I used SCT all the time, repeatedly tried MSBT and Parrot and apart from some neat animations in Parrot (and a lack of anything remotely useful animation-wise in MSBT) I found both bloated with functionality I'd never use, and impossible to configure compared to the 5-clicks-and-done setup of SCT.
Hence been using SCT.
Now that I use PowerAuras for the "Hey, look out!" stuff, I dropped scrolling combat-text altogether. I never read the actual numbers anyways, only noticed the color and the icon.
MSBT just got a beta version update that allows the user to define complex triggers. I haven't explored it much yet, but it could make it quite powerful.
MSBT is the only one I've found that can show my hunter pet's incoming damage (in addition to outgoing damage that others can show). Anyone happen to know if there is a way to configure sct or parrot to show pet incoming damage?

I actually like that MSBT doesn't make me wade through a dozen "cool" animation styles to set up something clean and simple that just scrolls by without wiggling all over the place. :P

Does it show incoming pet heals? It didn't pre-2.4 and that's something I've liked about MSBT.
Now if one of them would just show pet happiness ticks during Feed Pet so I don't have to switch my chat frame to show my combat log, that'd be awesome.

No idea what it did pre-2.4 everything's different now. New combat-log, new maintainer. (and yes, it does show now)

SCT can do those things with its custom events now (Pet damage, heals, happiness, etc...). You can do it in the custom events screen in game or in the config file, your choice. Using the in game menu is is pretty easy if you aren't already used to the config file way.

Yep, asked about it on MSBT's wowinterface comments and got it working last night :)

SCT suits me just fine and I'm used to its style,
been running it with similar configuration literally for years.

Parrot does. no config needed.
