Is there any possibilities for WoWAce addon authors to somehow create standard handling for "default" UI settings? What I mean, that if I backup my addons and WTF. I could just throw my friend with the UI package and as default he would get exactly the same settings as I am using. My current instructions for friends after downloading my Addons / WTF folder is just to...
Step 1:
Delete old Interface and WTF folders. Step 2:
Unzip my WTF, and Interface folders into your WoW directory. Step 3:
Rename folder YOURACCOUNTNAME in the \WTF\Account folder.
Rename folder YOURSERVERNAME in the \WTF\Account\YOURACCOUNTNAME\ folder.
Rename folder YOURCHARACTERNAME in the \WTF\Account\YOURACCOUNTNAME\YOURSERVERNAME folder. Step4:
Load into WoW.
And as you can understand, it isnt really working as well as I thought it would work. Is there any better way to share my UI setup? if no, could this be made easier from your part? I dont mean that is necesary, just that it would be great if sharing your UI could be just zip&share.
Thanks in advance :)

Industrial? Is that you?
And @ the OP, what exactly are you asking for? The only difficult step in your instructions is #3 - renaming account/realm/character folders - which can't really be avoided, because that's just how WoW works.
Part of the problem is some of your saved variables have the sharing toon's name/server in them. It's not always enough to just rename the folders. One method I have used is opening up all the saved variables in notepad++, then using the replace with command to replace toon names/server names with new ones. I have also edited classes in this manner too. Now you don't want to change all of them, for example you don't want to change the KC_Items saved variables or you will end up with wrong auction prices.
It's a crude method, and I would not suggest anyone do it without first backing up your WTF folder, but it has worked very well for me in the past.

tho what you can do is if the addon has profiles features to just copy your current profile to a new one, reload ui, then edit the SV file of all the other ones that arn't that new one you copied...

This is exactly the problem what I was refering to. Sorry for not being specific enough.
I was thinking if there was way to "default" the current UI setup so it would be irrelevant for the next user that what hes server name was or what hes account name was. So that without any that information, player could load into wow and since all addons load to some specific layout, how could that layout be the one what the author of Ui package had when he zipped up.
The steps are easy for all the people here. Us being in here proves that.
A lot of peeps don?t speak computer fluently though.
Imagine an addon called 'MySettings'. The purpose of this addon would be to hook into the different saved variables and then store that data in a per-character folder [Interface/AddOns/MySettings/******].
(If that is possible. I don?t know.) Only a few ingame commands needed: /settings save [insert name] and /settings load [insert name].
An addon list and the authors MySettings/****** folder would be the only thing needed to share UIs. (If they are that dumb give them the entire AddOn folder.)
Imagine having your top 5 UIs in your MySettings folder and being able to change between them on the fly.
Don?t know if its possible within the lua scope. If addons can?t write to their core folder, maybe 'MySettings' could collect all the other saved variables in its own saved variables. Authors could copy that to the core folder to be used for writing saved variables from there. If that makes sense.
no its not. Compilations suck and are for lazy people. If you are incapable of throwing addons together yourself you should be doing Computer 101 courses (retard).
Edit: And if you want your interface exactly like someone else you lack creativity.

I love messing around with my UI, but try to understand that there are huge amount of people who just dont bother because they arent that geekish or talk computers like you expect. They would like to try addons out, but they dont know where to start or how to start. I on the other hand would love to do this job for them, and just give them UI compilation what is stupid proof.
And it bothers me how Blizzard havent made UI sharing easier, thats why I wanted to ask these boards for such tool because of all the great tools wowace authors have released so far.
1) You shouldn't be using a compilation until you already understand how to download, install, and configure single addons.
2) Downloading, installing, and configuring single addons is NOT rocket science. Modifying addons might be a little harder, but yeesh, even I could figure out how to do that.
3) Your UI is a very personal thing, something you've put together to meet both your and your character's specific needs over time. How using someone else's pre-configured UI could not be an intensely uncomfortable experience is beyond me.
4) The whole point of screenshots is not (or should not be) advertisements for someone else's UI, but is (or should be) bragging rights about either your aesthetic sensibilities or showing how (through a specific combination of addons or lua scripting) you've solved some specific problem (ex. rdji's CML fits both cases).
5) Again, creating the UI is an intensely personal experience and we've already had one of the " target="" data-ensure-absolute>great sites shut down and several UI creators promise to never release another compilation because of the way they were treated by users demanding compilation releases and you want to make it easier for these people to keep demanding UI creators release their compilations?
I think sharing an UI layout can be done (for almost all ace2 addons) by using default profile.
Users then will have, if they want, to copy the default layout to their pref (char, class, server, faction, or any custom)
I hope i didn't totally misunderstood the initial post subject :)

Exactly for most ace addons you have to set them to the proper profile. If you didn't configure everything with defaults just change the variables.
You know why I download compilations and then tune them to how I want? Because I work 40-50 hours per week, I take two graduate classes that take about twenty hours per week of my time, I have a wife and family I enjoy spending time with, I have other hobbies like reading and watching movies and playing Wii, and I actually enjoy playing the game when I finally get a chance to sit down at my computer to do it. I have the ability to research how to modify a mod when I see one I like, even though I don't have any formal coding experience; I could, if I wanted, sit down to figure out how to organize all the information on my screen in a way that makes sense; I could if I wanted to handicap myself use Blizz's default ass-ugly UI. Instead, I find a way to utilize someone else's (MUCH APPRECIATED, THANK YOU) hard work and tune it to my needs, without having to spend three straight nights doing it.
This is why I just download the add-ons and don't post here. Jesus
ATC, thats great, but I still think you should do it yourself. If you have wow low on the priority list then well, dont do it in 3 nights straight, but when you see fit?
I can agree with the elitism on a personal level. My agenda was more concerning different UI setups: Raid, Arena, Solo etc.
Two things in life though; originals and clones. Those who want and can afford [in this case; make] an original will never buy [use] a clone. Serving the cloners does not necessarily harm sales [originality] as they are not contributing anyway.
A clothing designer might find me uncreative because I don?t make my own unique clothes. But I don?t want to and even if I did, I couldn?t do it as well as him. Thats why he makes my clothes and I make his UI.

guess you could setup an addon that captured layouts from a given profile and then xmited it to another player...

It could be a great thing for custom UIs.

Why yes... yes I do lack that :p

Edit: computers are appliances yes, but they can do a whole lot more. You have to talk computer to do that shit. There is NO way around it.
