Having been around the WowAce forums for some while now, I've been getting frustrated with the Firefox behaviour with attached .JPG files. It's just so #%"? annoying to each time choose "Open with" instead of "Save to disc" while the "Do this automatically for files" check box gloatingly remains uncheckable.
So... Dear Dr. Phil, how can I enhance my relationship with Firefox?
I can never get firefox to remember what I want with JPG or RAR either. I did digging and found out that it's because those file types are not listed under Options -> Content -> File Types (you can go in and manually set what FF should do with those listed file types). I haven't looked to see if there's an addon that adds file types to that list. I don't see a way to add things myself - at least not from that window.
If you switch from the WowAce board theme to the SMF default theme, clicking image attachments will load them full-size within the thread page. That's the only workaround I've found, and it only helps for images - but at least it's something.
I don't have this problem using Firefox on the wowace forums (or anywhere else). When I click an attached file, I always have the "Open with" option checked. If I chose to download a file, then I have the "Save to" option checked from this time on until I change it again.
From the screenshot, I'd say that you are using an older version of Firefox (but maybe you are using just another theme than I do, so I maybe wrong anyway ;-) ). The latest version is 126.96.36.199 (afaik). Maybe updating will solve your problem.

Yeah I guess using the old Windows theme instead of the default WinXP one might make it look old but it's the newest version still (especially since I downloaded the English version to get that fancy screenshot :D).
Thanks :) at least it now automatically checks the "open" and with the correct program. No checkbox still though. Decided it would be better to open them with Firefox, though now I have to figure out how to open it in a new tab instead of a new window. :P
(And why on earth do I have WoW-188.8.131.5259-to-0.3.0.7382-enGB-patch.exe in my \Mozilla Firefox\ folder... -_-)
