We've just finished setting up a system which syncs up all the Ace mods found at files.wowace.com with this site. You'll notice we've just added over 700 of the Ace mods, which will be automatically updated daily.
Ace authors do not need to manage their mods separately on this site, as our system will check for updates every day. All of the files are mirrored locally on our servers. If you're an Ace author and our bot has added one of your mods, and you'd like to take control of it, please ask for a transfer code by sending Rushster or another admin a PM on the forums. There is another reason we're now doing this, which we will be revealing very soon...watch this space!"
just wondering if this is gonna cause any problems with the site here...i really don't bother with wowui, but i don't want what they are doing overloading this already overloaded place =P
i'm not familiar with this stuff, so that's why i'm asking =)
Gotta agree there. Not to keen on wowui just lately though. It's a bit cheeky unless they asked permission. Personally I don't like going to wowui anymore. Last time I did I got a nasty keylogger from their mod downloading client and it wasn't an easy one to get rid of either, my avast checker didn't catch it and fortunately for me I realised immediately something was wrong because my addons were restting all the time and my pc was acting slow the moment I installed it. Just so happened to be the onlinegames keylogger. I installed Kapersky and it got rid of it thank goodness, so I would have to warn anyone thinking of using this uiworldofwar client, check it thoroughly first.
There's barely any performance impact on the Ace servers. Here's how it works:
We read the RSS file from files.wowace.com (which is a static file), and then download each updated zip file to our server. We keep mirrors of the zip files so we don't leech your bandwidth, and the sync is limited to once per day for the same reason. It should help with WoW patches and other events where the addons sites become heavily loaded, because our site can stay fairly stable throughout patch days due to the recent server upgrades. So in that way, it may actually help you guys out. We also made sure that the authors don't have to worry about keeping their mods up to date on our site, because all the mods are updated automatically as well.
We figured asking permission to use an RSS file that's already publically available wasn't really necessary, just the same as you don't have to ask permission to read an RSS file from a news site like bbc.co.uk.
As for the keylogger suggestions - there have never been any malware apps bundled with any of our free tools, I absolutely guarentee it. It may have been a rogue ad from the external agency, but definitely nothing we've ever put into the client. The minute that sort of thing is reported to us, we get rid of it immediately and report it to the ad agency. I believe Rush has changed the ads over now anyway, so it won't be happening again.
i don"t want to visit your site to get an addon that i can just update via WAU; hell i don"t want to even go to WoWInterface to update an addon even tho their site is 1000x better than yours and is less intrusive and better designed, thats where WUU comes in.
Also you didn't ask any of the authors if you are allowed to host their stuff on your site any I'm pretty sure there are some that wont agree in you doing so. Same holds a bit for Curse though they are the ones helping to run the servers.
You are generating ad revenue by using other peoples work without asking them so this is defenitly bad.

sorry your *new* thing fails.
@ Amthea
Even for some of us who can not use WAU(long story, don't ask), most all of us know about WoWAce's direct download site, and would rather get our downloads RIGHT HERE on this site, we can give feedback here and it will be seen.
You're releasing code, sometimes alpha and beta quality, to people who have NO IDEA what to do with it, how to use it, or where to go to get answers. These authors aren't going to want to go all the way to your site to check yet another thread about their addons, and you're just going to frustrate newer addon users.
I'm kind of concerned that you didn't go through the proper channels to do this, are you going to do this with all the mods on Curse and WoWInterface, too? I can't imagine this thing being ok, due to copyrighting issues.
We update directly from Ace, because this is where our answers are. And people who don't know about Ace, certain will sooner or later just by word of mouth. But why would they download from your site and then come here to report bugs, etc.? They wouldn't.
I don't agree with this, at all.
EDIT: I quoted Orion because he talks about the WAU, which I can not use, but most everyone else CAN.

Hello, the ace svn is not a release platform, although it currently is, the svn is undergoing big changes, which will change this. We don't want you doing this, a lot of authors still use the svn properly as a testing ground before releasing to addon sites. You are destroying this for them. If you want to discuss this further contact Kaelten at freenode #wowace
We've turned this off now. To be honest, we have very few options when it comes to dealing with Ace mods on the site, as hardly any authors upload theirs to it, so we saw this as our only option to get the Ace mods on there.

So you thought it was ok to upload them with out their permission?

That's because the mod authors choose not to upload their mods there. You can't go behind their backs and post their work there to boost your ad revenue and expect it to be okay.

The reason that Ace mod authors don't upload their mods to your site is because they choose not to. That doesn't give you any reason, or license to upload them, in any fashion, behind their backs or without asking them. Quite honestly, it speaks pretty loudly on it's own, and I won't be returning to your site myself.
I think everyone is missing the point here. What Amthea is trying to do is offer another channel to get Ace mods out there in a reliable and organised fashion. There are probably millions of WoW players that have never even heard of Ace mods or what Ace is all about. What Amthea is trying to do here is make them more accessible to everyone at no cost to the Ace team or the Ace mod authors. We totaly understand why Ace authors like keeping everything on the Ace site, it's one place to upload and less hassle.
What Amthea is doing is taking the hassle away from multiple uploads, easing the bandwidth load which is much better for patch days and giving the community access to the mods. Personally I have no didea what all the fuss is about. it is not impacting on Ace in anyway, just making the mods more accessible. Also there is an RSS feed for a reason is there not? Get the mods out there to the commuinty at large.
Why people are so defensive about their mods is really a mystery, the whole point of mods is to get people to actually use them, help send ideas to authors and make the community better.
In regards to Trojans, well Amthea answered that and over the eyars the site ahs been going we have had 2 attacks that got through and were dealt with within 20 mions of it happening. There is not a site out there more cautious than we are with mods.
Going back a bit about the WAU business, totaly different. The application actually leeched bandwidth on every download as I explained at the time. How a site is supposed to stay online with thousands of people hitting it from a third party app is a mystery to me hence the reason we had to block the application for the good of the site visitors and mod authors.
A number of posters on the WoWUI forums (I am a very active poster on those boards under another alias), agreed that mirroring Ace mods on WoWUI was a bad idea for a number of reasons.
1. Most of the mods (95%+) on the WoWAce SVN are beta code. That is why they are on the SVN in the first place, an SVN is tool used by developers. It was never meant to be a means of distributing mods, it just kind of took on that role as Ace based mods became popular. Funkydude summed this already however this also came up with WoWUI posters as well.
2. Authors prefer to have to the choice of what sites they release to, not someone deciding for them. By this action WoWUI may have alienated mod authors that would have uploaded their mods to WoWUI.
3. Many users like myself who download and test mods from WoWAce choose to cut out the hassle of updating them by using the WoWAceUpdater tool which is simple and easy to use. I have used WoWUI's UI Central and to be quite frank, I did not like it.
4. The sheer number of Ace mods crowded out all the other mods on WoWUI. Thus other non Ace mods could not have their time on the front page
5. Going back to the Beta code issues. Having these mods mirrored on WoWUI would result in many new users coming to the boards wondering why their newly installed mod did not work or was throwing errors. Although many of us veteran posters can help them, many times the question are only something an author can answer and in the case of bugs, cannot be handled at WoWUI.
6. WoWUI users also objected to the icon highlighting the Ace based mods. Not a good idea. Ace is not a "badge" to worn.
This all condensed from various comments on the WoWUI boards. Please in the future, if ANY site want to grab mods from WoWAce, please talk to the admins first and get their OK. Then we can avoid these kinds of messes in the future.
All points taken and have of course been considered prior to actually thinking about helping out.
No Ace mods will be highlighted on the main page of the site, so nothing is detracted from mod authors who are uploading to the site (thanks to them btw :).
Mods uploaded to WoWUI by the author will always take precedence.
We agree, UICentral is not great just now but that is about to change in the next 8 weeks.
All Ace mods should be tagged as Beta where relevent.
No Icon is there, it was only added yesterday so people could see what was going on.
A link direct back to each Ace mod page and no option for comments.
Hope that answers some queries :)
We know some people, for their own reasons, will not visit the site or have no intention to EVER come and visit the site and that is their choice, although why is always a mystery that has usually been compounded by rumour-mongering. In the past 2+ years the site has been going it has helped a LOT of authors and the WOW community and it is certainly not there to annoy people or has ever gone out intentionally to annoy people. However, people choose where they go for their own reasons and good luck to them, it is of no consequence to the future of the site.
For myself, in one sense at least, I don't care whether wowui provides ace mods mirrored from here. The fact is, I get my updates from here, and will continue to do so.
I use Wow UI Updater, a cross platform application that allows me to automate updating from almost every site out there - except wowui.
I note that I can't run wowui's auto updater - I don't do Windows.
I do get two mods that I use from wowui - but only because afaik, that's the only place I can get them. And I do it manually, which is a pain in the ass, given those are the only two mods I need to update manually.
I think the choice of whether specific software is to be hosted or mirrored on particular sites is the author's. Absent his permission, no site has any right to carry his software.
