First, I'm a bit OCD about some things. For example, I like my addons not to get flagged as "out of date" in game, especially when they were updated this morning.
I use the Mirage UI compilation. Led puts a lot of work into testing all the mods he includes, and trying to ensure they're up to date. So last night, he put out a new version of the compilation, updated for 2.2. This morning I downloaded it, installed it, and then ran WAU (the java version, since I'm on a mac) and found a fairly long list of "newer" mods. So I told WAU to update 'em. Then I logged into WoW, and was surprised to find a number of mods did not have up to date tocs. In the course of poking around, I discovered a new version of QuestAnnouncer (just for example) on WoWInterface, apparently posted by the "official" developer. It has a current toc. It doesn't have a current version # file. So when I run WAU again, it tells me this is version 0 of QuestAnnouncer, and there's a new version here I need to download. But that "newer" version is actually, it seems, based on an older official version.
I applaud the idea of having multiple people work on a project, but it seems to me there needs to be some coherence to it. That, as I understand it, is why things like svn exist. I realize that WoWAce can't control where devs decide to make their home - some here, some on curse, some on wowinterface, some on google. Nor can you control, really, what people upload to the svn. So maybe this is an insoluble problem - but it's definitely a pain for mod users. It takes me most of a day to get things the way I like when a new compilation comes out. If I have to worry about whether I really have the latest version of whatever it just makes things worse.
I know what Blizzard's answer would be, but I don't like their default UI. Surely we can find a way to improve the situation. Any ideas?
Well for one I know Mirage does tweak certain addons so they're not gonna be fully updated on files.wowace because it's not the same code. Also, there are obviously gonna be updates on the svn simply because most files are constantly updated. Look at the changelogs of the mods and you'll likely see translation fixes and other small updates that don't really matter. Lastly, if you really care about the out of date thing then why don't you just go into all the tocs and update them yourself? It requires zero coding skill.
What takes even less effort and skill is checking the little "load out of date addons" box. lol, I've seen it before - a mod is tested on the PTR and updated for the coming patch, and the Interface number is changed in the TOC for the upcoming Interface number change. It's not out of date - it's actually ahead of the game and still works 100% with the current WoW version. Yet, because the Interface number doesn't equal what WoW thinks it should equal, it says it's "out of date". Could even be a typo. 2020 or 22000 instead of 20200. WoW will say it's "out of date".
i dont think its a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth, i think its that one shouldnt fix what isnt broken. Theres no need to update your ui packages individual addons if its all working as intended, even tho it is very tempting to press the update button!
Personally, i always update to the latest version, but then again i always seem to be fixing my ui when it breaks after updating.
You will also find that older addons which still work perfectly are no longer maintained by the original author, so these either need their TOC's updated by a different "cook", or just tick the "load ood" box.
If you are using WAU then use that and don't replacement it with some version that Johnny Haxxor has put up on curse.
If you are using one for a Addon Compliation then wait for that author to update it
Don't mix and match with many different versions of an addon . It will only bring your grief
Also the author on this site are possibly the orignal authors of the addons in question. Don't blame them when someone else take's the work and posts modified versions of it . Do you hold JK Rowlings accountable for Sirus/Remus slash fanfictions? I don't and neither should you
