With the inclusion of Memory usage per AddOn in 2.1 everyone has been hot on this issue. Exactly what is the relationship of AddOn memory usage to total System Memory? I can understand someone who is running on say 512MB with a 256MB Video card being highly concerned but what about someone with 2GB System memory or even 4GB and someone with 512MB Video memory or greater? I am currently running about 73 -80MB AddOn Memory if all my LoD AddOns have loaded and don't have much problems. Just trying to see the big picture here.
If you have 2 gigs of memory, not much. The game uses less than a gig by default. It has no bearing on video memory, AFAIK. CPU useage and memory growth are far more important variables, and always have been.
Is there a console command/variable that can be set now to disable garbage cleanup? I have way more memory than I know what to do with, and 0 issues with hitting ~100+ mb used. However, I am noticing the old pause from garbage cleanup happening. It's irritating, especially in the middle of a boss fight. =\
Unless that changed with this patch, it most certainly does not.
I've gone many (8+) hours without clicking on PerformanceFu to force a garbage collection, and I've never had the "hitch" I have when garbage cleanup occurs. (Previously, my max mem size was set to 0.)
Ragardless, I plan on controlling my garbage collection manually, before a boss pull, etc.
I thought setting one's max mem size to 0, had that side effect? (I realize it's the cap of memory allowed in-game by mods, but for some reason, I was under the impression it would prevent GC from ever happening as well?)
GC's are going to happen no matter what you do.. There's some sort of lua cap baked in... in pre 2.1 there was a way to set your mem warning to 0 (disable) that didn't adjust GC, just turned off the warning that your UI could run away (to the large lua GC number), and your performance could tank, as the lua environment chewed up memory to that large number.
Clad had a really good thread somewhere on this. I think tek jumped in too along the way. I'll try to dig it up.
Aye, I recall the thread - I tried searching, but there was a lot of static. Appreciate it if you find anything.
*EDIT - Yeah, I still can't find the thread I had in mind. Someone was giving some commands to use to imitate the "upcoming" 2.1 memory management, and I was hoping to essentially reverse those variables back to previous values.
I believe I do, unfortunately. I'll watch the numbers, but I am pretty sure I am dropping from ~120MiB to ~40. The memory usage doesn't phase me, it's the "hitching" or "lurching" or "pausing" or whatever you want to call it.
Slowly degrading performance (this seems negligible to me) over many hours doesn't phase me, especially since I've never noticed such a thing. I am noticing the unnecessary (imo) pausing, which is what I want to eliminate. I am hoping not to have to resort to removing/disabling the (I am guessing) 3-4 "memory hogging" mods, as I do find them useful (or they wouldn't be installed in the first place).
