As I expressed on IRC, I have to agree with the OP (though perhaps not his particular method of delivery). I want (easily) human-readable changelogs in the zips. I don't give a damn if they're useful to updater tools or not . . . and sorry, "go read trac/use an RSS reader/etc." isn't a workable answer/solution for me. That's a good deal of extra effort to simply be able to read what's changed recently on an addon, and is a step BACKWARDS, a LOSS of feature/functionality compared to what we've had.
SVN style, GNU style, I don't overly care on the format so long as I can quickly read it. That's NOT XML.
Pasta - separate the issue of Changelogs in the zips from any concerns of Updater apps. There's a not insignificant number of us who simply want the changelogs there in the zips to be able to read what's happened with them.
Isn't there a possibility to use both ways? Use the XML and give the user a readable changelog as a second file? Like a standard readme? Only a suggestion.

If people really want a user-readable changelog, another possibility would be to leave the user-readable changelog in the zip (perhaps a smaller one with only the last few entries or something) and then have the fancy XML one linked via the RSS feed?
I am just a simple caveman lawyer, your modern words like XML, SVN, WAU, RSS and explanations of the new changelog format and reason for it confuse and confound me. I am not a machine, just a simple caveman, so where would I go to read these changelogs that have been designed to be read only by machines in your advanced and scary world?
Thanks - I just got to listen to the missus giggle and read the wikipedia page ...
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and was later thawed by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me! When I see my image on the security camera at the country club, I wonder, are they stealing my soul? I get so upset, I hop out of my Range Rover, and run across the fairway to the clubhouse, where I get Carlos to make me one of those martinis he's so famous for, to soothe my primitive caveman brain. But whatever world you're from, I do know one thing: in the 20 years from March 22, 1972, when he first ordered that extra nicotine be put into his product, until February 25, 1992, when he issued an interoffice memorandum stopping the addition of that nicotine, my client was legally insane.
That might be true, but i haven't installed all Ace addons out there. Old style i only needed to check the changelog of the addons updated on my computer and it was possible to see what the older changes where (sometimes giving a clue about why an addon is giving an error). New style i have to first find the addons i have and see what has been changed in a list of all Ace addons.
Ah well, if that's the way it's gonna be from now on, no use complaining about it i guess ;)
but today i updated all my addons and also looked in the changelog.txt of a few files, and also noticed this new XML format.
now with the latest updates i cant play wow anymore, whenever i press a key to use any macro like
i get this... "addon blocked from an action only available to the blizzard UI" popup and thus cant use those macros.
i also made an own thread here for this but no replies so far.
well so i assume you changed more than just the changelogs in last yesterdays update?
not even a complete rollback would fix this.

The changelog files are in no way loaded inside the game. So the errors you get are probably from one of the addons you updated.
well there must be some connection of modifying the changelogs and the blocking of the addon actions.
already got 2 replies from other people having the same problem.
and a rollback didn't solve it, so there must be something wrong with the updated wowace files.

I'll let you know if I have the same problem once I get home in 2 hours. I update once very 2 hours or so so its it connected I should have the same problem. Almost use all the addons you listed (except bartender).
Well it is super basic, but better than nothing.
I made a little xsl file which lists the changes in a table.
Although to make it work sime changes have to be made:
1. Renaming the changelog file extention to xml
2. adding the line [TT]<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="changelog.xsl"?>[/TT] after [TT]<?xml version="1.0"?>[/TT]
3. Place the xsl into the same folder as the changelog file
EDIT: Since I'm not allowed to upload xsl files, you have to rename the attached xml file back to xsl
4. Open the xml file with your browser
Maybe someone else has done something better or is willing to extend mine.
I don't get the point of this request. In first point you get this service for free and the server is run by this team. If they think it is better for any issue to change the log structure, it's fine for me. Why do they have to go back? Because some people are too lazy to use other sources for the changelogs?
Opinion?
Its free, its great, but then again I never heard of any WoW mod that cost money (exept that RXD thing).
I know about the eol discussion, but I dont care about that, I still want the old style changelog. The changelog isn't something used in the mod when running WoW, so why complicate it with unreadable and bloated format?
I think it wasn't changed to give you something to do, but fit a structure. All i say, if the team here thinks it is beneficial to use a different structure, they should use it.
And the the point: "but I dont care about that, I still want the old style changelog."
Perhabs there are people that don't care about your view and think the new system is better? The changelog isn't something you need to run the mod, neither use it, so why read it? Because you want more information, so what is the problem of getting it through RSS?
I think if there is a possibility to include the method mentioned earlier

Yes, its just my opinion, or rather want. If the majority of users like the XML-format and the need for an rss to read it, its ok.
Whatever format is used for the logs in the zip files, please give them appropriate extensions for the content. Naming XML files .txt files makes for really bad reading formats. Adding an the xml formatting file would be nice as well.
Regardless, whatever format is decided upon, please use the appropriate extension.
last few updates i have downloaded do have readable changelogs again. seems to contain a better formatted text file along with an xml file. anyone else notice this?

It would appear so. The only problem right now is that the text file and the xml file contain the very same text, and currently they are BOTH plain readable text files...
Having written my own PHP script to handle the addon updating, constant changes like this are kinda driving me nuts. :P

Don't have that conversation in this thread.

Rest in peace, Phil Hartman.
