I want to make a quick post regarding something a few people approached me with when we started talking about taking the svn and making it dev only.
One option that we are looking at to ensure further growth of the site and community and continued access to the svn is a server for wowace. I found one that I think is reasonable and wouldn't be hard for us as a community to support financially.
Right now the server would be way overkill, but I'd like ot see us grow into it :)
one option to support it would be to put goggle ads back up, but those only make money if I allow gold ads, which I don't want to do.
Another option would be to see if people would be willing to make a regular donation to help pay for the server. It wouldn't have to be much money, somewhere in the $5-10/month range. :)
So really this is just an interest poll to see if people would be interested in helping us do this. The server I'd like to get us would run around $85/month with a $250 setup fee. We could get the setup fee waived but then the monthly goes up dramatically. So I'd rather spend more now than later.
Like I said, this is just one idea we're looking at, so please give some feedback, and if you'd be willing to contribute let me know. :)
And before anyone shouts it out, I know that right now the server I'm looking at is more than we need, but I'd rather have more than we need than not enough :)
Maybe I missed a thread so pardon me if this is a silly questions. Is there a problem with the current hosting solution that would limit the growth of this website over time? I thought that I read, though I may of misinterpretted it, that the recent problems with the svn had nothing to do with the host but was from a corruption. Is what is currently in place broke?
If this is supposed to be a forum poll, I don't see it (i.e. I don't see any choice that can select and cast my vote).
That being, I would be willing to support this site but I'm not sure I would be able to do so every month. I can spare 60$-100$ a year.
I've seen other sites work against a goal. You could for example set a goal of 1000 $ which would give around a one year budget. You set up a pledge drive or a strait donation drive and see the real interest with your one year budget in mind.
You really shouldn't start spending your money before you are pretty sure of the community support otherwise you will end up covering the money yourself which I think would not be fair. Once it is launched, you accept donation against the second year budget. This give you time to "close the shop" if the community interest goes down without having to pour your own money into it. You guys are putting so much time into this already, your own finances should not be put at risk.
Well, that's my 0.02$. No matter want happen with this initiative, you guys are doing a wonderful job here and I thank you very mush for it.
As far as I understand it, the website is hosted by WoWI, and I've never had issues with it. Is there some problem with the hosting they're providing?
Again, AFAIK, Clad is hosting the SVN as some arrangement of his own, and the issue was with CPU power. From what I read, it was a shared setting, but still, the SVN was killing the server on it's own when it was public. I'm not sure any machine could handle an SVN the way the Ace community uses it as a public entity. I think the developer change would have been necessary at any point, regardless of the hosting situation.
So, getting a dedicated server would change what around here? Just curious ^^.
I'd certainly be willing to swing 5$ or so a month for the cause.
From my understanding, the server the SVN is on is not a good one for it. That's why the recent talks of locking it down to devs only. With the server solution Kaelten is suggesting, the SVN might be able to stay open. So that'd be one good reason for the move.
I personally am more along the lines of having a public mirror SVN, if any at all. Keep the "main" SVN dev-only so clad can remove any offending users that are going overboard on checkouts/updates.
i think tek is right.
you will find much community users whom are willing to mirror the ./files/ dir at their servers. (including me)
so just give all registered mirros a user/pass to access the ./files/ dir and let them mirror the zips.
hourly on change check or the whole dir daily. maybe there is a way to modify the svn so when a commit on an addon was done the mirrors will get notified and grab the new zip directly.
hmmm.. maybe youc can talk to WOWI about the php5 thing?
it's not THAT hard to set up and manage a seperate apache instance with -PHP5 running for wowace.com
Well kael, methinks maybe we should just start a pledge drive wiki page, since we've got a lot of people saying they'd help. Set us a goal (one year's operating costs?) and keep track on the wiki page. Probably be nice to keep a list of contributors too :)
