This is probably not the best place to ask this, but well you all seem to know your stuff. I manage a small pack of Mod's for my friends. I have been having a problem with getting it to compresse. I have been using WinZip for it due to the compatiblity with everybodys windows.
The problem is that the total folder size is 10mb and the zip is also 10mb. Is there a program that can create zip files that can be opened by the windows decompression utility that will compresse the files down to close to 6mb. I have tryied 7zip and it can get the size I want with diffrent compression formats.
The poeple this is for really only know how to use zip files.
I'm not familiar with 7zip, but most compression utilities offer an option to create a self extracting archive. However, with files such as WoW mods where there are a large number of very small files, zip compression doesn't seem to work terribly well. And poor Windows is too dumb to manage anything else.
Why the specific size? 10 megs isn't a terrible filesize to download, even with 56k, although I see it being too large for email, if that's what you're using. If it's hosting issues, I think both WoWI (www.wowinterface.com) and WWN (ui.worldofwar.net) have collection categories you can (ab)use. Maybe people other than your friends might like your choices too?
winzip should be able to compress a 10mb addons folder down very small. i think you should check your options or Preferences in winzip and make sure it's set to maximum compression. it's probably set to "store" or "speed" now.
I currently have it hosted on WOWI, and direct them there to get it. It's faster and bit smoother to do that. It is a bunch of very small mods, mostly aced mods and a few others. I will have to read the rules there again, and see if there is anything against self-extracting files.
I will check my settings in WinZip, but I believe I was using max compression. I will also play with 7zip some more and see if I can get it worked out.
Thank you both for the help and I will see if I can get it to work.
ah, yeah - good point. make sure you're not including each individual addon zip file in your compilation!
my \interface folder is 11.1mb and my \wtf directory is 5.16mb.
wheni make my regular backups of those folders (in 7z format) they compress down to a whopping 2.5mb or so. so ~16mb total down to 2.5 is pretty darn good. using 7zip on the max compression/dictionary/etc.
i know wheni used mods like Atlas (the in game maps), that folder by ITSELF was ~10mb and wouldn't compress much beyond that.
Thanks for all the help, I figured out what most of the silly file size was. I had .svn folders in nearly ever single Mod that I had in there. Removing those droppped it by 3megs alone. Removing Atlas as well made it drop down to 5.6megs total. So mostly it was my silly fault for not looking at what was sitting in my folders.
Also they were not all ready compressed, that would have been silly to compress a compressed file. I was just not getting any compression at all with WinZip for some reason. But I got it all figured out.
