You aren't bearing any news, sorry. Broadcasting my position to my guildmates is a lot different than broadcasting my talents to total strangers, to me anyway. It's not the same thing, and it's also a well known feature, not something they slipped in under the radar like they had something to hide. If they'd notified people so that others could turn it off it they'd wanted to, this whole argument wouldn't be here.
Also, the "ZOMG" stuff is really old and tired. I don't really care about the privacy thing, I don't like the features for my own reasons. But I'm posting here because I really look down on people being sneaky and underhanded. I've taken steps for myself to get around it, I'm only providing feedback.
EDIT: I'm going to edit my post to say one more thing on this topic, so that maybe people will understand why some of us are really leery of this kind of thing.
The difference between addon authors doing it and Blizzard doing it is, Blizzard isn't hiding it from us. They are flat out telling us that it's going to be done. And there's not a toggle for that. Blizzard isn't taking advantage of people being completely oblivious. RockComm is taking advantage of that, knowingly, by not putting this feature in the addon information and description.
Now, I would hope that people aren't stupid enough to ignore a brand new mini map button that is just screaming, "CHECK ME OUT! I wasn't here earlier!!!" But, hey, there are people like this out there and it's being sneaky not to document this feature and have it toggled OFF by default....
I'm a bit confused here. Auralei said she found it immediately.
Not the checkbox (that's not hard to find once you realize that it's Rock itself sending this info), it's the fact that Rock actually even has this functionality. That is to say that if Joe Bob installs Parrot, what clue is there to him that he should even check to see if Rock, Parrot's framework, is doing something he might not want?
Much like how an ordinary user would? You, Auralei and probably most of the people here on this forum know how to read/code lua/addons. I'm pretty confident an ordinary probably would not.
No, they wouldn't. And, according to a vocal part of this community, they shouldn't have to. And yet, here's people in this thread saying they should.
In the real world, sayings such as "Pull a fast one", "What they don't know won't hurt them", "Attention to detail", etc. are common said/used in one way or another. Welcome to the human race. :)
Don't get me started on the disaster that is humanity. As I said, it may be accepted in some societies, but that doesn't make it right.
Ultimately, there's really only one person whose opinion matters though, and he hasn't posted here.

Well I read 3 people kicking and screaming bloody murder. And a bunch who say it's no big deal and it will be close to Blizz behavior come 2.3. Everyone, without any lua experience can turn it off, but the lua experience thing is just one of many many exaggerations and strawman arguments that plague this thread specifically by the three people who kick and scream bloody murder. I for one am not surprised that ck doesn't post. What is there to gain from it?
I actually like the feature and I'm glad Blizz is adding it in 2.3. But that's inconsequential. Everyone has the right to like or not like it but don't make it as if you save humanity. You are not. And don't make it that everybody has to agree. I certainly do not agree that I or people in general have been tricked or exploited or whatever extremes have been thrown around.
Related story I've seen: You don't like cookies in your browser? Turn em off. Do laypeople understand that cookies even exist and that they can be turned off? No. But they are able and responsible to know what they use. They can be taught to turn it off and what it means. They are on by default and yes I do read still today, 10 years after they first came out (and people were kicking and screaming about cookies being default on back then) people hating cookies with a passion still today. This will not end. And these people are entitled (in fact I dislike cookies). But don't put personal sentiments on everybody else. And if you don't have a sense for sensible solutions, like telling people that they can turn it off, I'm sorry. Because simply put, this is a simple, clean and sensible solution. Just as the ability to turn RockComm's talent sending off is.
Difference is that RockComm's talent feature is way more benign generically than what cookies can do overall (tracking and profiling). Yet this thread calls doubts in humanity. I can't really take that seriously at all.
I can write an addon right now that will display specs of all players on my realm without any communication channel use at all. It will require parsing the armory site. In this addon you or anybody else will have _no_ ability to turn it off, and clearly come 2.3 the same will be the case without any armory site parsing, purely in-game. Tragedy is that the RockComm solution is way more elegant and has far less overhead. Ideally Blizz should add spec to the character tooltip by default, but it doesn't yet sound like that's the plan.
Yet I don't see there being any space at all for even having that kind of debate because the world is coming to an end as it seems just thinking that somebody may be sending around public information that can be had via alternative channels too. Geez seriously.
This thread is a big pile of noise about essentially nothing much at all. But I don't expect it to stop, it hasn't stopped since the first time sensible folks posted sensible reactions... It hasn't stopped since the first time it was pointed out that there is a lot of extremizing and demagogery here. Just like the cookie outrage still goes on today with some folks.
I feel this thread should have been locked a long time ago really. Drama threads really are a waste of time.
GuildPositions module.. defaults to ON, and broadcasts your exact location to anyone in your guild..

get over it.
