Personally the only reason I don't want to use 3 different frameworks is because they all got it in their heads to make their own config windows. Why is completely beyond me as an addon such as Niagara based solely on LibStub and a standardized config table could easily handle it.
3 different frameworks? are you refering to Ace2/3 and Rock? ... im not sure dongle has a config lib of any comparable sort to the way Ace2/3 or Rock has it.
as for niagra config.. the main point there is who is going to maintain it? and IMHO the biggest problem is that you have to invent the standard first, or adapt an existing one; and there seems to be a lack of willingness to do that. Beyond inventing it you have to get the major authors to use it.
RockConfig now shows everything that Niagara does.
Very nice indeed, now having a category option and a way to set the fade alpha of the config window and I like it even more :D
All my little addons now nicely live and function correctly within RockConfig, which is quite awesome.
I think part of the confusion was indeed if backward compatibility in the configuration side would be coming. I think we got the answer and the question I posted elsewhere about RockConfig vs Niagara integration is kind of settled now, which is very good from a user side at least I think.
Please help me understand what is going on.. I love ACE-addons.. I only want to use ACE-addons. And since my last WoWAceUpdate i got rock involved.. :-/
Read the thread you just posted in, it gives you all the answers. And to quote OrionShocks Signature:
"The overall goal is disconnect the libraries from the addon when it comes to the user. They shouldn't CARE what is in it, they should care that the non-library code is well written." --tekkub
Because he said it the best.
Ok after chain reading the forums for 3 days straight now since I first decided to see what my new Rock icon is all about & freaking right out I had a few shots of a nice South African Port & am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel:
*Everyone is going to use LibStub, & a lot of people outside this community are also going to do so as well.
*The frameworks are not all that big & theres some small processing overhead.
*But, standalone LibStub libraries are going to be freaking awesome! Each library will do exactly what it needs to do & no more. Unencumbered by frameworks they will be freely available for all authors even non Ace authors.
Now there is simply one challenge remaining for us: we need to put everything that can be standalone into a LibStub! In this way we retain the benefit of all the common code we have + we gain the benefit of a few lightweight frameworks we can pick and choose from. The fact of the two co-existing frameworks keeps the process biased towards standalone libs so that as much as possible can be agnostic.
Let the rampant decoupling of the libs from their tyranical framework overlords commence!
Am I the only one NOT liking this Rock thing? Having different menu's or config screens worked perfectly, and was a lot simpler than the piled up options from all my different Ace mods, as it is with Rock. Give me a way to disable it atleast. No offense to the creators btw, but I'd much rather stick with the 'old' way of setting up my mods.

If you had read the forums you would have known a lot of people don't like Rock Config, an equal amount do like it. You can't "disable" it, as Pitbull, Fubar, CowTip and cartographer now are based on Rock, thus it is required. However you are welcome to roll back to the previous version (Fubar 2.0 etc)
From the devs: Epic battle ensues as each developer takes their "side" as to what framework is better / faster.
From the end user: What the f*ck is this new icon doing on my minimap (or Fubar...w/e)
As for the self-fellating developers like Funkydude's smarmy retort:
"Let us devs do the addon building thanks, you can stick to UI building and trying to get a shred of popularity from our addons."
LOL. As for us end-users we could care less what mods you guys write. Last time I checked all mods developed under an Ace community kicked quite a bit of ass. Get over your righteous hierarchy of who's better than who and continue to crank out good mods (for free lol thanks). If you don't find that millions of players are using your mods rewarding enough, then maybe you should stick to some more commercialized avenue of lua programming (like RDX, oh that went over real well)
With that being said I honestly don't mind Rock's uninvited introduction to my ui. I'm not particularly a fan of configuring my mods with the Dewdrop library, I'm also not a fan of mods adding themselves. I prefer a waterfall type configuration. Rock does just this. Most people use Ace mods for small memory footprints and "Can I make this look different with Surfaces/Skinner?".
ps. I don't frequent these forums enough to care about the rebuttals, so don't bother.
you can also switch to other mods.. no one forces you to use ckknights mods :)
Well I wont use other Mods (yet). I've switched to ALL-Ace a while back, cause I like the freedom of configuring everything I run and also I find Ace Mods to run a lot better, and are updated frequent. But I feel like Rock is crammed into my Mod-box and I just need to cope, well to me the mod is unfinished (UI wise you simply get a bad over-all view and it very messy how Mod Setups are tossed in the scroll list) <- constructive comment. The Idea of Rock is good though, a Central Config Station, I'm sure a lot of people would want to use it, just not me (yet). Would it be impossible to have Rock as a separate Mod so it can be implemented by Ace users on demand, and not forced.
Thanks for the tip on using an older version BTW, and keep up the good work with Ace :)
You people seem to get some things wrong around here;
First of all, you get no guarantee whatsoever that things have worked, work now or will work in the future.
You get no guarantee that your suggestions will be implemented in the future.
Yelling "zomg change buttin rock back it suck~!" won't help you.
Using only addons from wowace because you can update them easy makes you a really dumb lazy bastard in my eyes, because you don't value any of the work anyone outside this community puts in their addons. It's just fanboism.
Any author will do what he pleases with his work, because it's his work. If you don't like it then don't use it. It's that simple.
"well I used the old one and it worked fine"
well tuff for you, you can still use it, and it still works fine.

I think you got the wrong side of the stick, I code for fun as a hobby, I love the fact tons of people use addons I make and I love the fact I give them for free. How would you feel if you saw a growing trend of people making UI's then asking for donations/charging for them? Addons you make being charged for? How would you feel?

Indeed, it does, though with Aperture (spelling?) I get errors. And every listing in Rock shows up double. (I'll post it where it should go ;))
finaly i can get rid of that nearly worthless mod (ie i don't use it)

Also, I'm not in the mood to start my own community.

I think for the time being the developer community as it was some months back is no longer.
