I still have no idea when loot drops if it suits me or not, is an upgrade or not :( Usually have to have RAWR running in another monitor to check.
Nice to have an addon that will interrogate the loot from bosses and each character in the group and put in the chat window XXXX would benefit most from item name. Would save some people rolling on everything because they don't know any better, would save on people missing out because they don't know any better. Everyone can still roll greed anyway, so it would only be a suggestion.
I designed ClassLoot knowing that people would use it in all different kinds of ways, but personally I just use the ratings as a glance overview of what class/specs the item appears to be designed for (stuff like working out if it's a dpswarr/rogue/feraldruid item) for example without having to think about what stats are there. It won't check who will benefit the most out of it, but will give a good idea if the right kind of person is rolling for it :)
"... would save on people missing out because they don't know any better."
I might be a total prick, but if they don't bother to pay attention to what they need and what are upgrades, then it's their own problem if they're missing out.

lol I don't say much here but i have to agree with that statement 100%, it's down to the individual to learn what's an upgrade and what stats his/her toon needs and should be focusing on.
What next? addons telling us what buttons to press and at what time.
Learn to play and stand on your own two feet dude, its more fun :)

Indeed... and the code in the ones I've seen is horrendous. Someone needs to write an addon that tells those developers how to write the addon so they don't have to think for themselves.

I know, I know ridicule has already entered the thread. To scare away the demons, here's some O-notation: O(log(n)).
OPs idea is fine. While I don't know of an addon that does exactly what he's looking for there are a few that help (rating buster, classloot, rhadatip).
Addon support for quick yet sound judgement of items (across groups/guild, across alts, across specs) is still an open field for innovation. It's a kind of unthankful area to work in because blizz changes how stat functions along with talent trees rather frequently...
I wouldn't mind having a good solution across alts/specs myself. I don't partularly like that "oh, this could be good for my off-spec/alt" (fiddles around with bag items/item cache addon to try to find the items to compare against, while having an irrelevant comparison tooltip up, and while the tank has pulled 3 more packs ahead and dies to a lack of healing).
In all seriousness... I think what you really want is something that just boils an item down to it's general role (heal, magic DPS, ranged DPS, melee DPS, tank). From there it should be a fairly simple matter for the human to match the role to the raid members.
What would really be "innovative" would be an addon that scans through inspect info and saves what people are wearing. Then when you get a cloth belt drop you can quickly compare it against what all your cloth wearers belts are. Maybe even sort them by ilvl (since it'd give a good general quality comparison).
The innovation lies with actually helping people make quick judgements.
2 haste vs 1 spirit? If you can boil that down to this is better for X and worse for Y because the 2 haste help him more than the 1 spirit for the other, then you have indeed innovated, but as said it's hard. Item comparison is by no means a trivial task, hence the mention of RAWR in the original post.
And supporting an item drop comparison across alts and specs too would be innovation. My ideal solution would be tooltip comparison that is smart, i.e. automatically shows the best upgrade pair from a defined set (offspec gear, alt gear, guild gear, raid gear) rather than the currently worn one, if it exists for BoE items. Clearly some innovation there.

Last one has happened to me, thats when the idea came to me.
L2P, I would if I had the time, just a cursory push in the right direction is what is needed. I have a guy at work who can rattle off every stat for every bit of gear in the game, I don't need to learn that much :)

This spin-off of InventoryOnPar was planned to do exactly what you're requesting here.
I don't know how far it has come as I'm not a user.
This is also a handy tool for loot committees. You can quickly view equipped items for a given slot for all players in a raid. A command line function provides the loot committee with a sorted list of best candidates for a particular loot item. It attempts (I'm still working on this!) to determine which player would get the most overall improvement for a given loot item.

Just my 2 cents
These addons already exist.

Yeah it's called Addon Studio... oh wait! :P

Zing!
Elsia... :P on you.
