I currently have a VERY useful mod called "Dynamic Performance" that I got before Wrath hit. It broke, and the original author isn't around. Someone made a small fan edit, uploaded it via FileFront, and I was able to grab it and use it. It works perfectly.
The addon itself automatically scales back several settings, such as sight clipping, horizon clipping, ground effects, and spelleffects to keep your fps at a given number. It will also crank them UP if your computer can handle it. A nice thing it would do is keep spell effects at least above a given place that would allow you to see boss ground effects (Nightbane anyone?).
My idea is thus: with the new patch and the several changes to effects and the like, who is interested in updating and maintaining this addon? I can upload the working version I have, but I am unfortunately unable to do so as I am not a coder by any means.
I'd be happy to upload my working copy. It's a godsend really, and useful for EVERY computer. Got a bad one? Lowers your effects to keep from chugging. Got a good one? Makes everything as pretty as can be.
Ah, didn't know that. I have done anything outside of "Post Quick Reply" in so long...
I imagine we'd have to wait till 3.1 hits live to do most of the edits for the new spell effects system, but I at least wanted someone hooked enough to look through the code and provide some life support. I don't know what I'd do without it.
I actually wrote something similar recently, but rather than dynamically adjusting settings based on current framerate, applies specific profiles of settings based on events. It started with my boyfriend's request for an addon to automatically lower his video settings in Dalaran, and has expanded to do some other neat things. For example, I have water collision disabled most of the time, but if I'm swimming and something attacks me, it turns on water collision so the camera snaps underwater with me and I can see what's hitting me. Once I exit combat, water collision is disabled again. There is no GUI, and it's a bit rough around the edges, but I can upload it if anyone's interested.
It might be nice to do a hybrid with Phanx's idea by prioritizing which settings to change based on situation. For example, avoid lowering view distance outdoors, and avoid lowering spell detail too far in a raid instance.
It's 100% event-based, so it's not really suited to incremental adjustments like those necessary to keep FPS within a certain range. It also currently doesn't do anything to account for the fact that multiple profiles can overlap... so if I set up one profile that applies while in combat, and one that applies while in an instance, it will apply the instance profile when I zone into an instance, then apply the combat profile when I enter combat, but when I leave combat it will just revert to the default settings instead of reapplying the instance profile. It's an easy fix, but since I don't currently have any such overlaps, I haven't done it yet. :p
The nice thing about having it dynamically change settings is that you don't then have to fiddle with it as much to set up profiles. The downside of course is that there's a bigger performance hit, which is what it's supposed to counter in the first place.
My machine is powerful enough that I don't need dynamic settings adjustments. I have my settings high by default, with lower-settings profiles that kick in when I'm in Dalaran, in Wintergrasp, in raid instances, etc. to counter the FPS-killing effects of those zones. If I absolutely need maximum FPS while questing on an alt, I can always manually activate a profile via slash command. :p
Not everyone gets to play with your machine Phanx ;). And it's nice for it to crank effects back during high aoe fests, and back up a bit for the pretties while I'm jumping back and forth waiting for loot to be handed out. If I had a better machine, your addon would be preferred. For what I have to deal with now, I like mine.
