I think they did, but only the per-account macro slots, not the per-character macro slots. Most people probably need more character-specific macros than macros that are shared by all characters, though. And, for some things, 255 characters just isn't enough. Though there's nothing intrinsically wrong with Blizzard's macro interface, I'd guess that most people who make heavy use of macros will probably be happier with an addon.

This is probably the reason I've never run out of macro space (i.e., finding an addon to do more complex tasks before trying to write a macro to do it). In fact, I only recently started using per-character macros after having played the game for years.
Addons like IHML freed up a ton of macro slots as well, although sadly I haven't seen that updated for Wrath (yet?).
Macaroon can do pretty much unlimited amount of macros as well as have more than 255 characters in each macro. You can also do "profiles" like one setup for raiding and one for farming.
Its the best mod out there for those who detest the default blizz setup.
Yes, Macaroon was already mentioned several times further up in the thread. Generally, it's considered poor forum etiquette to make posts that just repeat previous posts.
I just had to drop Macaroon for Bartender4 as it was not functioning correctly for vehicle possession bars while in-combat (i.e. Malygos phase 2-3 shift), and there has not been any activity from the author on the bug report forums, so I'm also looking for something to extend the number of macros and length somehow. As a druid I've got macros for feral/moonkin and resto... not enough. Plus I loved being able to extend the 255 character limit. Now having to rewrite everything back down to condensed versions :)
there is nothing wrong with vehicle support while using macaroon you just have to set it up correctly check out the Macaroon FAQ section over at wowinterface
Yeah, I've posted links to the specific FAQ entry in several threads here. A link to the FAQ is prominently included on the WoWI download page, and the specific entry is obviously labeled in the FAQ. Since people keep whining that "Macaroon doesn't work", I can only come to the conlusion that anyone incapable of locating this readily available, information and following the easily understood directions it offers shouldn't be using the addon anyway, and deserves to be burdened by the limits in less featureful, less complicated addons.
It was not too complicated at all... sometimes the pet switches worked in Malygos, other times they did not. Multiple people have had the same problem in the same instance. I had no problem on any vehicle possession except Malygos 25 when the pet switch is made during combat.
Please don't just be condescending and assume the end-user is an idiot.
99.99% of the time, that assumption is correct. I'm not terribly concerned about the other .01% of the time. That said, I haven't had any problems at all with Macaroon and the [bonusbar:5] state, in any situation, on any character, in combat or out, so I'm not really sure why it would inconsistently fail in one specific situation for some users. I can only imagine that there is some configuration setting you and others who have issues have in common. Next time you run Malygos-25, leave the Blizzard bar enabled in addition to your Macaroon bar(s) and see if it works correctly when Macaroon does not.

yeah, I could have sworn that I read something about them increasing the number of macros limit in 3.0.
